1 Enoch 35

What Happens in This Chapter

In this one-verse chapter, the traveler continues his tour of the ends of the earth, turning west. He reports three open gates in the sky there, matching in number the gates he saw in the east, with the same number of openings. It completes the set of directions begun in the chapters before it.

From there I went toward the west, to the ends of the earth, and I saw three gates of the sky standing open there, like the ones I had seen in the east: the same number of gates, and the same number of openings.

1And from thence I went towards the west to the ends of the earth, and saw there three portals of the heaven open such as I had seen in the †east†, the same number of portals, and the same number of outlets.

"Portals" are gateways or doors; here they are openings in the sky through which the winds come out. The dagger marks around "east" in the Charles translation show that the surviving manuscripts disagree at that word, so the direction there is not certain.
