Jesus

45Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land unto the ninth hour.

From noon until three in the afternoon, it was dark over the whole land.

46And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is to say, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

About three o'clock Jesus called out in a loud voice. He said, "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?" That means, "My God, my God, why have you left me alone?"

47Some of them that stood there, when they heard that, said, This man calleth for Elias.

Some people standing there heard him. They said, "He is calling for Elijah." Elijah was a prophet who lived long before.

48And straightway one of them ran, and took a spunge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

Right away one of them ran and got a sponge. He filled it with sour wine. He put it on a stick and held it up for Jesus to drink.

49The rest said, Let be, let us see whether Elias will come to save him.

The others said, "Leave him alone. Let us see if Elijah comes to save him."

50Jesus, when he had cried again with a loud voice, yielded up the ghost.

Jesus called out again in a loud voice. Then he gave up his spirit and died.

51And, behold, the veil of the temple was rent in twain from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent;

Just then the curtain in the temple tore in two, from top to bottom. The ground shook and rocks split apart.

52And the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints which slept arose,

The graves opened. The bodies of many of God's people who had died were raised to life.

53And came out of the graves after his resurrection, and went into the holy city, and appeared unto many.

After Jesus rose from the dead, they came out of the graves. They went into the holy city, and many people saw them.

54Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

A Roman officer and his soldiers were guarding Jesus. They saw the earthquake and all that happened. They were very afraid. They said, "This really was the Son of God."

55And many women were there beholding afar off, which followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

Many women were there, watching from far away. They had followed Jesus from Galilee and helped take care of him.

56Among which was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of Zebedee’s children.

Mary Magdalene was one of them. So was Mary, the mother of James and Joses. So was the mother of Zebedee's sons.

57When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:

When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea arrived. His name was Joseph. He was a follower of Jesus.

58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate ordered that the body be given to him.

59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

Joseph took the body. He wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.

60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

He laid it in his own new tomb, which was cut into the rock. He rolled a big stone across the door. Then he went away.

61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary were there. They sat across from the tomb.

62Now the next day, that followed the day of the preparation, the chief priests and Pharisees came together unto Pilate,

The next day was the day after Preparation Day, when people got ready for the day of rest. The chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate. The Pharisees were leaders who were very careful about God's law.

63Saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said, while he was yet alive, After three days I will rise again.

They said, "Sir, we remember what that man who fooled people said. While he was alive he said, 'After three days I will rise again.'

64Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest his disciples come by night, and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: so the last error shall be worse than the first.

So give the order to guard the tomb until the third day. If not, his followers may come and steal the body. Then they will tell people he rose from the dead. That last lie would be worse than the first one."

65Pilate said unto them, Ye have a watch: go your way, make it as sure as ye can.

Pilate said to them, "You have guards. Go and make the tomb as safe as you can."

66So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, and setting a watch.

So they went and made the tomb safe. They sealed the stone and put guards there.

1In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

The Sabbath, the weekly day of rest, was over. Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

Suddenly the ground shook hard. An angel, a messenger from God, came down from the sky. He rolled the big stone away from the door and sat on it.

3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

His face shone bright like lightning. His clothes were as white as snow.

4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

The soldiers guarding the tomb shook with fear. They fell down like dead men.

5And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was killed on a cross."

6He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

"He is not here. He is alive again, just as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying."

7And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

"Now go quickly. Tell his disciples, the friends who followed him, that he is alive again. He is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Listen, I have told you."

8And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

So they hurried away from the tomb. They were afraid and very happy at the same time. They ran to tell his followers the news.

9And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

On the way, Jesus met them. He said, "Hello!" They came close, held his feet, and worshipped him.

10Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. They will see me there."

16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

Then the eleven followers went to Galilee. They went to the mountain Jesus had told them to go to.

17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

When they saw him, they worshipped him. But some of them were not sure.

18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Jesus came to them and said, "I have been given the right to rule over everything in heaven and on earth."

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

"So go to people everywhere. Help them become my followers. Baptize them with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit."

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

"Teach them to obey everything I have told you. And listen, I am with you every day, right to the end of this age."

9And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptized of John in Jordan.

Around that time Jesus came from Nazareth, a town in Galilee. John baptized him in the Jordan River.

10And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon him:

As soon as Jesus came up out of the water, he saw the heavens open. God's Spirit came down on him like a dove.

11And there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.

A voice came from heaven. It said, "You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you."

12And immediately the Spirit driveth him into the wilderness.

Right away God's Spirit sent Jesus out into the wilderness.

13And he was there in the wilderness forty days, tempted of Satan; and was with the wild beasts; and the angels ministered unto him.

Jesus stayed there forty days. Satan tried to get him to do wrong. Wild animals were there too. Angels took care of him.

14Now after that John was put in prison, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of the kingdom of God,

Later John was put in prison. Then Jesus went to Galilee. He told people the good news from God.

15And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.

He said, "The right time is here. God's kingdom is close. Turn away from doing wrong, and believe the good news."

16Now as he walked by the sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and Andrew his brother casting a net into the sea: for they were fishers.

Jesus was walking beside the Sea of Galilee, a large lake. He saw Simon and his brother Andrew throwing a net into the water. They caught fish for their work.

17And Jesus said unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you to become fishers of men.

Jesus said to them, "Come and follow me. You gather fish now. I will teach you to gather people."

18And straightway they forsook their nets, and followed him.

Right away they left their nets and went with him.

19And when he had gone a little farther thence, he saw James the son of Zebedee, and John his brother, who also were in the ship mending their nets.

He walked a little farther. He saw James and his brother John, the sons of Zebedee. They were in a boat, fixing their nets.

20And straightway he called them: and they left their father Zebedee in the ship with the hired servants, and went after him.

Right away Jesus called them. They left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired workers. Then they went with Jesus.

21And they went into Capernaum; and straightway on the sabbath day he entered into the synagogue, and taught.

They went to the town of Capernaum. On the Sabbath, the Jewish day of rest, Jesus went into the synagogue and taught. A synagogue is where Jewish people met to pray and learn.

22And they were astonished at his doctrine: for he taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.

The people were surprised at his teaching. He taught like someone who was in charge. The scribes, the teachers who studied and copied God's law, did not teach that way.

23And there was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit; and he cried out,

A man in the synagogue had an evil spirit inside him. The man shouted out.

24Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, the Holy One of God.

He said, "Leave us alone, Jesus of Nazareth! What do you want with us? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are God's Holy One."

25And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him.

Jesus spoke firmly to the spirit. He said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!"

26And when the unclean spirit had torn him, and cried with a loud voice, he came out of him.

The evil spirit shook the man hard. It gave a loud yell. Then it came out of him.

27And they were all amazed, insomuch that they questioned among themselves, saying, What thing is this? what new doctrine is this? for with authority commandeth he even the unclean spirits, and they do obey him.

Everyone was amazed. They asked each other, "What is this? This teaching is new, and he is in charge. He even tells evil spirits what to do, and they obey him."

28And immediately his fame spread abroad throughout all the region round about Galilee.

Soon news about Jesus spread through the whole area around Galilee.

40And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.

A man with leprosy, a bad skin disease, came to Jesus. He knelt down and begged, "If you are willing, you can make me clean."

41And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.

Jesus felt sorry for him. He reached out his hand and touched the man. He said, "I am willing. Be clean."

42And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.

Right away the leprosy left the man. He was clean and well.

43And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;

Jesus sent him away at once and warned him strongly.

44And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.

Jesus said, "Do not tell anyone about this. Go and show yourself to the priest. Bring the gift Moses said to bring when someone is made clean. That will show them you are well."

45But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.

But the man went out and told everyone. He spread the news everywhere. So Jesus could not walk into a town openly anymore. He stayed outside in quiet, empty places, and people still came to him from everywhere.
