In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

1The Sabbath day was over. As Sunday morning began to grow light, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to look at the tomb.

Note"Sepulchre" is an old word for a tomb. In that time and place, a tomb was often a room cut into rock, closed with a large stone rolled across the entrance.

2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

2Then there was a strong earthquake. An angel of the Lord came down from heaven, rolled the stone away from the entrance, and sat on it.

3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

3His face shone like lightning, and his clothes were as white as snow.

4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

4The soldiers guarding the tomb shook with fear of him. They became like dead men.

5And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

5The angel said to the women, "Don't be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was put to death on a cross.

6He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

6He is not here. He is alive again, just as he said he would be. Come and see the place where he was lying.

7And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

7Now go quickly and tell his disciples that he has risen from the dead. He is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Listen, I have told you."

8And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

8They hurried away from the tomb, afraid and full of joy. They ran to tell the disciples the news.

9And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

9As they were going to tell the disciples, Jesus met them. "Hello," he said. They came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.

10Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

10Then Jesus said to them, "Don't be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. They will see me there."

11Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

11While the women were on their way, some of the guards went into the city. They told the chief priests everything that had happened.

12And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

12The chief priests met with the elders and made a plan. They gave the soldiers a large amount of money

13Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

13and told them what to say: "Tell people, 'His disciples came during the night and stole his body while we were asleep.'

14And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

14And if the governor hears about this, we will talk him around and keep you out of trouble."

15So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

15So the soldiers took the money and did as they were told. That story has been passed around among the Jews ever since.

16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

16Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to meet him.

NoteThere were eleven disciples instead of twelve because Judas, who handed Jesus over, was no longer with them.

17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

18Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

19So go and make followers of me in every nation. Baptize them in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

Note"Teach all nations" in the old wording means make disciples, that is, gather learners and followers, not simply give lessons.

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

20Teach them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, right to the end of this age."

Note"The end of the world" in the old wording means the end of this present age, not the destruction of the planet.
