Matthew 28

In the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulchre.

1The Sabbath, the weekly day of rest, was over. Early on Sunday morning, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to see the tomb.

2And, behold, there was a great earthquake: for the angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door, and sat upon it.

2Suddenly the ground shook hard. An angel, a messenger from God, came down from the sky. He rolled the big stone away from the door and sat on it.

3His countenance was like lightning, and his raiment white as snow:

3His face shone bright like lightning. His clothes were as white as snow.

4And for fear of him the keepers did shake, and became as dead men.

4The soldiers guarding the tomb shook with fear. They fell down like dead men.

5And the angel answered and said unto the women, Fear not ye: for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.

5The angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid. I know you are looking for Jesus, who was killed on a cross."

6He is not here: for he is risen, as he said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay.

6"He is not here. He is alive again, just as he said. Come and see the place where he was lying."

7And go quickly, and tell his disciples that he is risen from the dead; and, behold, he goeth before you into Galilee; there shall ye see him: lo, I have told you.

7"Now go quickly. Tell his disciples, the friends who followed him, that he is alive again. He is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there. Listen, I have told you."

8And they departed quickly from the sepulchre with fear and great joy; and did run to bring his disciples word.

8So they hurried away from the tomb. They were afraid and very happy at the same time. They ran to tell his followers the news.

9And as they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them, saying, All hail. And they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

9On the way, Jesus met them. He said, "Hello!" They came close, held his feet, and worshipped him.

NoteThe old English "All hail" was just a friendly greeting, like saying "Hello" or "Greetings."

10Then said Jesus unto them, Be not afraid: go tell my brethren that they go into Galilee, and there shall they see me.

10Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee. They will see me there."

11Now when they were going, behold, some of the watch came into the city, and shewed unto the chief priests all the things that were done.

11While the women were going, some of the guards went into the city. They told the chief priests, the leaders at the temple, all that had happened.

12And when they were assembled with the elders, and had taken counsel, they gave large money unto the soldiers,

12The chief priests met with the older leaders and made a plan together. They gave the soldiers a large amount of money.

13Saying, Say ye, His disciples came by night, and stole him away while we slept.

13They told them, "Say this: 'His followers came at night and stole him away while we were asleep.'"

14And if this come to the governor’s ears, we will persuade him, and secure you.

14"If the governor, the ruler in charge, hears about this, we will talk to him. We will keep you out of trouble."

15So they took the money, and did as they were taught: and this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.

15So the soldiers took the money and said what they were told to say. That story is still told among the Jewish people today.

16Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.

16Then the eleven followers went to Galilee. They went to the mountain Jesus had told them to go to.

17And when they saw him, they worshipped him: but some doubted.

17When they saw him, they worshipped him. But some of them were not sure.

18And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

18Jesus came to them and said, "I have been given the right to rule over everything in heaven and on earth."

Note"Power" here means the right to be in charge, not strength like a strong arm.

19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:

19"So go to people everywhere. Help them become my followers. Baptize them with water in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit."

20Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

20"Teach them to obey everything I have told you. And listen, I am with you every day, right to the end of this age."

Note"The end of the world" in old English means the end of this long stretch of time, not the breaking apart of the planet.
