Mark 16

And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

1The day of rest was over. Mary Magdalene, Mary the mother of James, and Salome bought sweet spices. They wanted to put the spices on Jesus' body.

NoteSweet spices were strong, good-smelling oils and powders. People put them on a dead body to care for it and honor it.

2And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

2Very early on Sunday morning, just as the sun came up, they went to the tomb.

3And they said among themselves, Who shall roll us away the stone from the door of the sepulchre?

3They said to each other, "Who will roll the stone away from the door of the tomb?"

4And when they looked, they saw that the stone was rolled away: for it was very great.

4Then they looked up. The stone was already rolled away. And it was a very big stone.

5And entering into the sepulchre, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a long white garment; and they were affrighted.

5They went inside the tomb. A young man in a long white robe was sitting on the right side. The women were frightened.

6And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.

6He said to them, "Do not be frightened. You are looking for Jesus of Nazareth, who was killed on a cross. He is alive again. He is not here. Look at the place where they laid him.

7But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter that he goeth before you into Galilee: there shall ye see him, as he said unto you.

7Now go and tell his followers, and tell Peter. Jesus is going ahead of you to Galilee. You will see him there, just as he told you."

8And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

8The women hurried out and ran from the tomb. They were shaking, and they did not understand. They were so afraid that they told no one anything.

9Now when Jesus was risen early the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had cast seven devils.

9Jesus came back to life early on Sunday. The first person he showed himself to was Mary Magdalene. He had once sent seven evil spirits out of her.

ManuscriptsThe oldest surviving manuscripts of Mark end at verse 8. These last twelve verses appear in later copies, and most modern Bibles print them with a note saying so.

10And she went and told them that had been with him, as they mourned and wept.

10She went to the people who had been with Jesus. They were crying and very sad. She told them what she had seen.

11And they, when they had heard that he was alive, and had been seen of her, believed not.

11They heard that Jesus was alive and that she had seen him. But they did not believe it.

12After that he appeared in another form unto two of them, as they walked, and went into the country.

12After that, Jesus showed himself to two of them. He looked different than before. They were walking out in the country.

13And they went and told it unto the residue: neither believed they them.

13Those two went back and told the rest of the group. But the others did not believe them either.

14Afterward he appeared unto the eleven as they sat at meat, and upbraided them with their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they believed not them which had seen him after he was risen.

14Later Jesus came to the eleven followers while they were eating a meal. He told them they were wrong not to believe. Their hearts were hard and stubborn. People had seen him alive, and they had not believed those people.

NoteThe King James Bible says the followers "sat at meat." In old English, "meat" meant food of any kind, so this just means they were sitting down to a meal.

15And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

15He said to them, "Go out into all the world. Tell the good news to everyone.

16He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

16Anyone who believes and is baptized will be saved. Anyone who does not believe will be judged guilty.

Note"Baptized" means being washed or dipped in water as a public sign of following Jesus. The King James Bible says the other person will be "damned." In 1611 that word meant condemned, or judged guilty.

17And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

17These signs will go with the people who believe. Using my name, they will send evil spirits out of people. They will speak in new languages.

18They shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.

18They will pick up snakes with their hands. If they drink something deadly, it will not hurt them. They will put their hands on sick people, and those people will get well."

19So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.

19After the Lord Jesus said these things to them, he was taken up into heaven. He sat down at God's right side.

20And they went forth, and preached every where, the Lord working with them, and confirming the word with signs following. Amen.

20His followers went out and told the good news everywhere. The Lord worked with them. He showed their message was true by the signs that went with it. Amen.
