Luke 4

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

1Jesus was full of the Holy Spirit. He came back from the Jordan River. The Spirit led him out into the desert.

2Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.

2For forty days the devil tried to get him to do wrong. Jesus ate nothing all those days. When the days were over, he was hungry.

Note"Tempted" here means the devil kept trying to talk Jesus into doing something wrong.

3And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.

3The devil said to him, "If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to turn into bread."

4And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.

4Jesus answered, "God's book says people do not live on bread alone. They live by every word God says."

5And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.

5The devil took him up to a high place. In one quick moment he showed him all the kingdoms of the world.

6And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

6The devil said, "I will give you power over all of them, and all their greatness. It was handed over to me. I give it to anyone I want."

7If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.

7"So if you will bow down and worship me, all of it will be yours."

8And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.

8Jesus answered, "Get away from me, Satan. God's book says, worship the Lord your God. Serve only him."

9And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:

9Then the devil took him to Jerusalem. He set him on the highest point of the temple, God's house. He said, "If you are the Son of God, jump down from here."

10For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:

10"God's book says he will tell his angels to watch over you and keep you safe."

11And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.

11"It says they will hold you up in their hands. You will not even bump your foot on a stone."

12And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

12Jesus answered, "It also says, do not test the Lord your God."

13And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.

13The devil finished every test he had. Then he left Jesus alone for a while.

Note"For a season" means for a time, not forever. The devil would come back later.

14And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.

14Jesus went back to Galilee with the Spirit's power in him. News about him spread all over that whole area.

15And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.

15He taught in their synagogues, the places where people met to learn about God. Everyone said good things about him.

16And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.

16He came to Nazareth, the town where he grew up. As he always did, he went to the synagogue on the Sabbath, the day of rest. He stood up to read.

17And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,

17Someone handed him the scroll of the prophet Isaiah. A prophet is a person who told people what God said. Jesus unrolled it and found this place:

18The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,

18"The Spirit of the Lord is on me. He chose me to bring good news to poor people. He sent me to heal broken hearts. I tell people who are locked up that they are free. I tell blind people they will see again. I set hurting people free."

19To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.

19"I tell everyone that this is the year the Lord helps his people."

20And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.

20He rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the helper. Then he sat down. Everyone in the synagogue kept their eyes on him.

21And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.

21He began to say to them, "Today these words came true while you were listening."

22And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

22Everyone spoke well of him. They were surprised at the kind words he said. They asked, "Isn't this Joseph's son?"

23And he said unto them, Ye will surely say unto me this proverb, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in thy country.

23He said to them, "You will surely say this old saying to me: 'Doctor, heal yourself.' You will say, do here what we heard you did in Capernaum."

24And he said, Verily I say unto you, No prophet is accepted in his own country.

24He said, "I tell you the truth. No prophet is welcomed in his own hometown."

25But I tell you of a truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elias, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when great famine was throughout all the land;

25"Here is the truth. Many widows lived in Israel back when Elijah lived. A widow is a woman whose husband has died. For three and a half years no rain fell. People all over the land were very hungry."

Note"The heaven was shut up" means no rain came from the sky, so nothing would grow.

26But unto none of them was Elias sent, save unto Sarepta, a city of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow.

26"But Elijah was not sent to any of those widows. He was sent to a widow in Zarephath, a town near Sidon."

27And many lepers were in Israel in the time of Eliseus the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, saving Naaman the Syrian.

27"Many people in Israel had a bad skin sickness when Elisha the prophet lived. Not one of them was made well. Only Naaman, a man from Syria, was made well."

28And all they in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,

28When the people in the synagogue heard this, they all became very angry.

29And rose up, and thrust him out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might cast him down headlong.

29They jumped up and pushed him out of the town. They took him to the edge of the hill their town was built on. They wanted to throw him off it.

30But he passing through the midst of them went his way,

30But Jesus walked right through the middle of them and went on his way.

31And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

31He went down to Capernaum, a town in Galilee. He taught the people there on the Sabbath days.

32And they were astonished at his doctrine: for his word was with power.

32They were amazed at what he taught. His words had real power.

33And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean devil, and cried out with a loud voice,

33In the synagogue was a man with an evil spirit inside him. He shouted out in a loud voice.

34Saying, Let us alone; what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art; the Holy One of God.

34He said, "Leave us alone! What do you want with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Did you come to destroy us? I know who you are. You are the Holy One of God."

35And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him in the midst, he came out of him, and hurt him not.

35Jesus spoke firmly to the spirit. He said, "Be quiet. Come out of him." The spirit threw the man down in front of everyone. Then it came out and did not hurt him.

36And they were all amazed, and spake among themselves, saying, What a word is this! for with authority and power he commandeth the unclean spirits, and they come out.

36Everyone was amazed and talked about it together. They said, "What kind of words are these? He orders evil spirits with power, and they come out."

37And the fame of him went out into every place of the country round about.

37News about Jesus went out to every place in that whole area.

38And he arose out of the synagogue, and entered into Simon’s house. And Simon’s wife’s mother was taken with a great fever; and they besought him for her.

38Jesus left the synagogue and went to Simon's house. Simon's wife's mother was sick with a high fever. They asked Jesus to help her.

39And he stood over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she arose and ministered unto them.

39He stood over her and spoke firmly to the fever. It left her. She got up right away and served them.

40Now when the sun was setting, all they that had any sick with divers diseases brought them unto him; and he laid his hands on every one of them, and healed them.

40As the sun was going down, people brought their sick friends to Jesus. They had many different sicknesses. He put his hands on each one and made them well.

41And devils also came out of many, crying out, and saying, Thou art Christ the Son of God. And he rebuking them suffered them not to speak: for they knew that he was Christ.

41Evil spirits also came out of many people. They shouted, "You are the Son of God!" Jesus spoke firmly to them and would not let them talk. They knew he was the Christ, the king God had promised to send.

Note"Suffered them not" means he did not allow them. "Suffer" in old English meant to let or allow.

42And when it was day, he departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought him, and came unto him, and stayed him, that he should not depart from them.

42When morning came, Jesus went out to a quiet, empty place. The people looked for him. They found him and tried to keep him from leaving.

43And he said unto them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for therefore am I sent.

43He said to them, "I must tell other towns the good news about God's kingdom too. That is why I was sent."

44And he preached in the synagogues of Galilee.

44So he kept on preaching in the synagogues of Galilee.
