Luke 24

Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

1On Sunday, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb. They brought the sweet-smelling spices they had made ready. Some other people came with them.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

2They found that the big stone had been rolled away from the tomb.

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

3They went inside. The body of the Lord Jesus was not there.

4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

4They did not know what to think. Just then two men in shining clothes stood beside them.

5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

5The women were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground. The two men said, "Why are you looking for the living among the dead?

6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

6He is not here. He is alive again! Remember what he told you back in Galilee.

7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

7He said the Son of Man, the name Jesus used for himself, must be handed over to sinful men. He would be nailed to a cross. On the third day he would rise again."

8And they remembered his words,

8Then the women remembered what Jesus had said.

9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

9They came back from the tomb. They told all of this to the eleven apostles and to everyone else. The apostles were the close followers Jesus had chosen.

10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

10The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. Other women were with them. They are the ones who told the apostles.

11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

11But the apostles thought it was silly talk. They did not believe the women.

12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

12Then Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the linen cloths lying there. He went away, wondering what had happened.

13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

13That same day two of them were walking to a village called Emmaus. It was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

NoteThe KJV says "threescore furlongs." A furlong was an old way to measure distance. It comes out to about seven miles.

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

14They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.

15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

15While they talked it over, Jesus himself came near and walked along with them.

16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

16But something kept them from knowing who he was.

17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

17He asked them, "What are you talking about as you walk along?" They stopped, looking very sad.

18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

18One of them, named Cleopas, said, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened these last few days?"

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

19"What things?" he asked. They said, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, someone who spoke God's words. He said and did powerful things in front of God and all the people.

20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

20Our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death. They nailed him to a cross.

21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

21We hoped he was the one who would set Israel free. And today is the third day since all this happened.

22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

22Some women in our group surprised us. They went to the tomb early this morning.

23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

23They did not find his body. They came and told us they had seen angels, who said Jesus is alive.

24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

24Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They found it just as the women had said. But they did not see him."

25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

25Then Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are! Your hearts are so slow to believe everything the prophets said.

26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

26Did the Christ, the king God promised to send, not have to suffer all this and then enter his glory?"

27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

27He began with Moses and all the prophets. He explained to them what all the Scriptures said about himself. The Scriptures are God's holy writings.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

28They came near the village where they were going. Jesus acted as if he were going farther.

29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

29But they begged him, "Stay with us. It is almost evening, and the day is nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

30He sat at the table with them. He took bread, thanked God for it, broke it, and gave it to them.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

31Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he disappeared from their sight.

32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

32They said to each other, "Our hearts felt warm inside while he talked with us on the road. He opened up the Scriptures for us."

Note"Did not our heart burn within us" does not mean a sore stomach. It means their hearts felt warm and excited while Jesus talked.

33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

33They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and their friends together.

34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

34The group was saying, "The Lord is truly alive again! He has shown himself to Simon."

35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

35Then the two told what had happened on the road. They told how they knew him when he broke the bread.

36And as they thus spake, Jesus himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you.

36While they were talking about this, Jesus himself stood among them. He said, "Peace be with you."

37But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

37But they were startled and afraid. They thought they were seeing a ghost.

38And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and why do thoughts arise in your hearts?

38He said to them, "Why are you upset? Why do doubts come into your hearts?

39Behold my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye see me have.

39Look at my hands and my feet. It is really me. Touch me and see. A ghost does not have flesh and bones, but you can see that I do."

40And when he had thus spoken, he shewed them his hands and his feet.

40When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

41And while they yet believed not for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here any meat?

41They were so full of joy and wonder that they still could not believe it. He asked them, "Do you have any food here?"

NoteIn 1611, "meat" meant food of any kind, not just meat from animals. Jesus is asking if they have anything to eat.

42And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish, and of an honeycomb.

42They gave him a piece of cooked fish and some honeycomb, the waxy comb that bees fill with honey.

43And he took it, and did eat before them.

43He took it and ate it while they watched.

44And he said unto them, These are the words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must be fulfilled, which were written in the law of Moses, and in the prophets, and in the psalms, concerning me.

44He said to them, "This is what I told you when I was still with you. Everything written about me must come true. It is written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms."

45Then opened he their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures,

45Then he helped their minds understand the Scriptures.

46And said unto them, Thus it is written, and thus it behoved Christ to suffer, and to rise from the dead the third day:

46He said to them, "This is what was written. The Christ would suffer, and he would rise from the dead on the third day.

47And that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name among all nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

47And in my name, people will tell all nations to turn from sin and be forgiven. This will start in Jerusalem.

48And ye are witnesses of these things.

48You have seen all these things. You are the ones who will tell about them.

49And, behold, I send the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city of Jerusalem, until ye be endued with power from on high.

49Listen, I am sending you what my Father promised. But stay in the city of Jerusalem until God gives you power from above."

50And he led them out as far as to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

50He led them out of the city as far as Bethany. He lifted up his hands and blessed them.

51And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven.

51While he was blessing them, he left them. He was carried up into heaven.

52And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

52They worshipped him. Then they went back to Jerusalem, filled with great joy.

53And were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
