Luke 22

Now the feast of unleavened bread drew nigh, which is called the Passover.

1The Feast of Unleavened Bread was almost here. People also call it the Passover.

NoteUnleavened bread is flat bread made without yeast. The Passover was a yearly holiday. It helped people remember when God brought Israel out of Egypt.

2And the chief priests and scribes sought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

2The chief priests and the scribes, teachers of God's law, were looking for a way to kill Jesus. They were afraid of the people.

3Then entered Satan into Judas surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve.

3Then Satan, God's enemy, went into Judas Iscariot. Judas was one of Jesus' twelve chosen helpers.

4And he went his way, and communed with the chief priests and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

4Judas went and talked with the chief priests and the temple guards. He asked how he could hand Jesus over to them.

5And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

5They were glad. They agreed to give Judas money.

6And he promised, and sought opportunity to betray him unto them in the absence of the multitude.

6Judas said yes. He watched for a time to hand Jesus over when no crowd was near.

7Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the passover must be killed.

7Then came the day of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. On that day the Passover lamb was killed.

8And he sent Peter and John, saying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.

8Jesus sent Peter and John. He said, "Go and get the Passover meal ready for us to eat."

9And they said unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

9They asked him, "Where do you want us to get it ready?"

10And he said unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there shall a man meet you, bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the house where he entereth in.

10He said, "When you go into the city, a man will meet you. He will be carrying a jar of water. Follow him into the house he enters."

11And ye shall say unto the goodman of the house, The Master saith unto thee, Where is the guestchamber, where I shall eat the passover with my disciples?

11"Say to the owner of that house, 'The Teacher asks, where is the guest room? He wants to eat the Passover meal there with his followers.'"

12And he shall shew you a large upper room furnished: there make ready.

12"He will show you a big room upstairs, already set up. Get the meal ready there."

13And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover.

13They went and found everything just as Jesus had said. So they got the Passover meal ready.

14And when the hour was come, he sat down, and the twelve apostles with him.

14When the time came, Jesus sat down at the table. His twelve apostles, the helpers he had chosen, sat with him.

15And he said unto them, With desire I have desired to eat this passover with you before I suffer:

15He said to them, "I have really wanted to eat this Passover meal with you before I suffer."

16For I say unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

16"I tell you, I will not eat it again until it comes true in God's kingdom."

17And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and said, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

17He took the cup of wine and thanked God. He said, "Take this and share it with each other."

18For I say unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God shall come.

18"I tell you, I will not drink wine again until God's kingdom comes."

19And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me.

19He took bread and thanked God. He broke it and gave it to them. He said, "This is my body, given for you. Do this to remember me."

20Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood, which is shed for you.

20After supper he did the same with the cup. He said, "This cup is God's new promise, made by my blood, poured out for you."

21But, behold, the hand of him that betrayeth me is with me on the table.

21"But look. The man who will hand me over is here at this table with me."

22And truly the Son of man goeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed!

22"The Son of Man, the name Jesus used for himself, will go as God has planned. But how sad it will be for the man who hands him over."

23And they began to enquire among themselves, which of them it was that should do this thing.

23They started asking each other which one of them would do this.

24And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest.

24The followers also argued about which of them was the greatest.

25And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors.

25Jesus said, "Kings of other nations rule over their people. The men in charge call themselves friends of the people."

26But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve.

26"You must not be like that. The greatest of you should act like the youngest. The leader should act like a servant."

27For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth.

27"Who is greater, the one eating at the table or the one serving him? It is the one at the table. But I am here with you as one who serves."

28Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations.

28"You are the ones who have stayed with me through my hard times."

29And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my Father hath appointed unto me;

29"So I am giving you a kingdom, just as my Father gave me one."

30That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and sit on thrones judging the twelve tribes of Israel.

30"You will eat and drink at my table in my kingdom. You will sit on thrones and judge the twelve family groups of Israel."

31And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat:

31The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, Satan has asked to shake all of you. He wants to shake you like a farmer shakes wheat."

NoteSimon is Peter's other name. Jesus is talking to Peter here.

32But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren.

32"But I have prayed for you, that you will keep trusting me. When you come back, help your brothers be strong."

33And he said unto him, Lord, I am ready to go with thee, both into prison, and to death.

33Peter said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you to jail and even to death."

34And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock shall not crow this day, before that thou shalt thrice deny that thou knowest me.

34Jesus said, "Peter, I tell you, the rooster will not crow today until you say three times that you don't know me."

35And he said unto them, When I sent you without purse, and scrip, and shoes, lacked ye any thing? And they said, Nothing.

35Jesus asked them, "When I sent you out with no money, no bag, and no sandals, did you need anything?" They said, "No, nothing."

36Then said he unto them, But now, he that hath a purse, let him take it, and likewise his scrip: and he that hath no sword, let him sell his garment, and buy one.

36He said, "But now, if you have a money bag, take it. Take a travel bag too. If you have no sword, sell your coat and buy one."

37For I say unto you, that this that is written must yet be accomplished in me, And he was reckoned among the transgressors: for the things concerning me have an end.

37"God's book says about me, 'He was counted as one of the lawbreakers.' That must come true. Everything written about me is coming to an end now."

38And they said, Lord, behold, here are two swords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

38They said, "Lord, look, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough."

39And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

39Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, a hill he often went to. His followers went with him.

40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

40When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not be pulled into doing wrong."

41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

41He went away from them, about as far as a person can throw a stone. He knelt down and prayed.

42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

42He said, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. But do what you want, not what I want."

Note"This cup" is a way of talking about the hard suffering that was coming to Jesus.

43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

43Then an angel from heaven came to him and made him strong.

44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

44He hurt so much inside that he prayed even harder. His sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.

45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

45He got up from praying and came to his followers. They were asleep, worn out from being so sad.

46And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

46He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so you will not be pulled into doing wrong."

47And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

47While he was still talking, a crowd came. Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came close to Jesus to kiss him.

48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

48But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

49The men with Jesus saw what was about to happen. They said, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?"

50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

50One of them struck the servant of the high priest, the top priest, and cut off his right ear.

51And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

51But Jesus said, "Stop! That is enough." Then he touched the man's ear and healed him.

NoteThe King James words here are "Suffer ye thus far." Long ago "suffer" meant "allow." Jesus is telling them to stop.

52Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

52The chief priests, the temple guards, and the elders had come for him. Jesus said to them, "Did you bring swords and clubs, as if I were a robber?"

53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

53"I was with you in the temple every day, and you never grabbed me. But this is your hour, when darkness has power."

54Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the high priest’s house. And Peter followed afar off.

54They took Jesus and led him to the high priest's house. Peter followed, but he stayed far behind.

55And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were set down together, Peter sat down among them.

55People made a fire in the middle of the yard and sat down together. Peter sat down with them.

56But a certain maid beheld him as he sat by the fire, and earnestly looked upon him, and said, This man was also with him.

56A servant girl saw him sitting in the firelight. She looked hard at him and said, "This man was with Jesus too."

57And he denied him, saying, Woman, I know him not.

57But Peter said it was not true. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.

58And after a little while another saw him, and said, Thou art also of them. And Peter said, Man, I am not.

58A little later someone else saw him and said, "You are one of them too." Peter said, "Sir, I am not."

59And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him: for he is a Galilaean.

59About an hour later another man said firmly, "This man really was with Jesus. He is from Galilee too."

60And Peter said, Man, I know not what thou sayest. And immediately, while he yet spake, the cock crew.

60Peter said, "Sir, I don't know what you are talking about." Right then, while he was still speaking, the rooster crowed.

61And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had said unto him, Before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice.

61The Lord turned and looked at Peter. Peter remembered what the Lord had said. Jesus had told him, "Before the rooster crows, you will say three times that you don't know me."

62And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

62Peter went outside and cried very hard.

63And the men that held Jesus mocked him, and smote him.

63The men who were holding Jesus made fun of him and hit him.

64And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face, and asked him, saying, Prophesy, who is it that smote thee?

64They covered his eyes and hit his face. They said, "You speak for God. So tell us, who hit you?"

65And many other things blasphemously spake they against him.

65They said many other insulting things against him.

66And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together, and led him into their council, saying,

66As soon as it was morning, the leaders of the people, the chief priests, and the scribes met. They brought Jesus to their council, the group of leaders who judged cases.

67Art thou the Christ? tell us. And he said unto them, If I tell you, ye will not believe:

67They said, "Are you the Christ, the king God promised to send? Tell us." He said, "If I tell you, you will not believe me."

68And if I also ask you, ye will not answer me, nor let me go.

68"And if I ask you a question, you will not answer me or let me go."

69Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

69"From now on, the Son of Man will sit at God's right hand, the place of power."

70Then said they all, Art thou then the Son of God? And he said unto them, Ye say that I am.

70Then they all said, "So are you the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say that I am."

71And they said, What need we any further witness? for we ourselves have heard of his own mouth.

71They said, "Why do we need anyone else to tell us? We heard it ourselves from his own mouth."
