Leviticus 6

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

1The LORD spoke to Moses. He said:

2If a soul sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and lie unto his neighbour in that which was delivered him to keep, or in fellowship, or in a thing taken away by violence, or hath deceived his neighbour;

2If someone does wrong against the LORD, this is what it may look like. He may lie to a neighbor about something left with him to keep safe. He may lie about something given to him as a promise. He may steal, or trick his neighbor to get something.

NoteThe old word "soul" here just means a person.

3Or have found that which was lost, and lieth concerning it, and sweareth falsely; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein:

3Or he may find something someone lost and lie about it. He may promise before God that he did not take it. If a person does any of these wrong things,

4Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found,

4then he has sinned and is guilty. He must give back what he stole. He must give back what he got by tricking someone. He must give back what was left with him to keep. He must give back the lost thing he found.

5Or all that about which he hath sworn falsely; he shall even restore it in the principal, and shall add the fifth part more thereto, and give it unto him to whom it appertaineth, in the day of his trespass offering.

5The same is true for anything he lied about under a promise to God. He must pay the whole thing back. Then he must add one fifth more. He gives it to the owner on the day he brings his offering.

6And he shall bring his trespass offering unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, with thy estimation, for a trespass offering, unto the priest:

6He must also bring an offering to the LORD to make things right. He brings a ram from the flock with nothing wrong with it. It must be worth the right amount. He brings it to the priest, the man who serves God at the altar.

7And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein.

7The priest will make things right for him before the LORD. Then he will be forgiven for whatever he did wrong.

8And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

8The LORD spoke to Moses. He said:

9Command Aaron and his sons, saying, This is the law of the burnt offering: It is the burnt offering, because of the burning upon the altar all night unto the morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it.

9Tell Aaron and his sons the rule for the burnt offering. The offering stays on the altar all night until morning. The fire on the altar must keep burning.

10And the priest shall put on his linen garment, and his linen breeches shall he put upon his flesh, and take up the ashes which the fire hath consumed with the burnt offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar.

10The priest must put on his linen robe and his linen shorts. Then he takes the ashes off the altar. These are what is left after the fire burns the offering. He puts the ashes down beside the altar.

11And he shall put off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry forth the ashes without the camp unto a clean place.

11Then he takes off those clothes and puts on other clothes. He carries the ashes outside the camp. He puts them in a clean place.

12And the fire upon the altar shall be burning in it; it shall not be put out: and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order upon it; and he shall burn thereon the fat of the peace offerings.

12The fire on the altar must keep burning. It must never be put out. Every morning the priest adds wood to the fire. He lays the burnt offering on it in order. He also burns the fat from the peace offerings on it.

13The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out.

13The fire must keep burning on the altar all the time. It must never go out.

14And this is the law of the meat offering: the sons of Aaron shall offer it before the LORD, before the altar.

14This is the rule for the grain offering. Aaron's sons bring it to the LORD, right in front of the altar.

NoteThe old wording says "meat offering," but there is no meat in it. It is a gift of flour and oil.

15And he shall take of it his handful, of the flour of the meat offering, and of the oil thereof, and all the frankincense which is upon the meat offering, and shall burn it upon the altar for a sweet savour, even the memorial of it, unto the LORD.

15The priest takes a handful of the fine flour and the oil. He takes all the sweet-smelling frankincense that is on it. He burns this part on the altar. Its smell pleases the LORD. This part stands for the whole gift.

16And the remainder thereof shall Aaron and his sons eat: with unleavened bread shall it be eaten in the holy place; in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation they shall eat it.

16Aaron and his sons eat the rest of the flour. They eat it as bread made without yeast. They eat it in a holy place, in the yard around God's tent.

17It shall not be baken with leaven. I have given it unto them for their portion of my offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as is the sin offering, and as the trespass offering.

17It must not be baked with yeast. I have given it to them as their share of the gifts burned for me. It is very holy, like the sin offering and the offering for guilt.

18All the males among the children of Aaron shall eat of it. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations concerning the offerings of the LORD made by fire: every one that toucheth them shall be holy.

18Any man in Aaron's family may eat it. This rule lasts for all time, for their children and grandchildren. Whatever touches these gifts becomes holy.

19And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

19The LORD spoke to Moses. He said:

20This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer unto the LORD in the day when he is anointed; the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a meat offering perpetual, half of it in the morning, and half thereof at night.

20This is the gift Aaron and his sons bring to the LORD. They bring it on the day a priest is set apart with oil. It is about two quarts of fine flour, given every day. Half comes in the morning and half in the evening.

Note"A tenth of an ephah" was an old way to measure flour. It is about two quarts, or two big bowls full.

21In a pan it shall be made with oil; and when it is baken, thou shalt bring it in: and the baken pieces of the meat offering shalt thou offer for a sweet savour unto the LORD.

21It is mixed with oil and cooked on a flat pan. When it is baked, bring it in. Break it into pieces and offer it to the LORD. Its smell pleases him.

22And the priest of his sons that is anointed in his stead shall offer it: it is a statute for ever unto the LORD; it shall be wholly burnt.

22The son who is set apart to be priest after Aaron will make this offering. This rule lasts for all time. The whole offering must be burned up.

23For every meat offering for the priest shall be wholly burnt: it shall not be eaten.

23Every grain offering for a priest must be burned up completely. No one may eat it.

24And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

24The LORD spoke to Moses. He said:

25Speak unto Aaron and to his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed shall the sin offering be killed before the LORD: it is most holy.

25Tell Aaron and his sons the rule for the sin offering. The animal is killed before the LORD, in the same place as the burnt offering. It is very holy.

26The priest that offereth it for sin shall eat it: in the holy place shall it be eaten, in the court of the tabernacle of the congregation.

26The priest who offers it will eat it. He must eat it in a holy place, in the yard around God's tent.

27Whatsoever shall touch the flesh thereof shall be holy: and when there is sprinkled of the blood thereof upon any garment, thou shalt wash that whereon it was sprinkled in the holy place.

27Whatever touches its meat becomes holy. If blood splashes on clothing, wash that clothing in a holy place.

28But the earthen vessel wherein it is sodden shall be broken: and if it be sodden in a brasen pot, it shall be both scoured, and rinsed in water.

28If the meat is boiled in a clay pot, that pot must be broken. If it is boiled in a bronze pot, that pot must be scrubbed and rinsed with water.

29All the males among the priests shall eat thereof: it is most holy.

29Any man in the priests' family may eat it. It is very holy.

30And no sin offering, whereof any of the blood is brought into the tabernacle of the congregation to reconcile withal in the holy place, shall be eaten: it shall be burnt in the fire.

30But some sin offerings may not be eaten. If the blood was taken inside God's tent to make things right in the holy place, no one eats that offering. It must all be burned up.
