Leviticus 24

And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

1The LORD spoke to Moses. He said this to him.

2Command the children of Israel, that they bring unto thee pure oil olive beaten for the light, to cause the lamps to burn continually.

2"Tell the people of Israel to bring you pure olive oil. The oil is made by crushing olives. It is for the lamps, so they keep burning all the time.

3Without the vail of the testimony, in the tabernacle of the congregation, shall Aaron order it from the evening unto the morning before the LORD continually: it shall be a statute for ever in your generations.

3Aaron will take care of the lamps in the tent where God meets the people. He will set them up outside the curtain that hangs in front of the holy chest. The lamps must burn from evening until morning before the LORD. This rule will last always, for your children and their children.

4He shall order the lamps upon the pure candlestick before the LORD continually.

4Aaron will keep the lamps burning on the pure gold lampstand before the LORD.

5And thou shalt take fine flour, and bake twelve cakes thereof: two tenth deals shall be in one cake.

5Take fine flour and bake twelve loaves of bread with it. Use about four pounds of flour for each loaf.

NoteThe KJV says "two tenth deals." That means two-tenths of a measure called an ephah, which is about four pounds of flour.

6And thou shalt set them in two rows, six on a row, upon the pure table before the LORD.

6Set the loaves on the table of pure gold before the LORD. Put them in two rows, with six loaves in each row.

7And thou shalt put pure frankincense upon each row, that it may be on the bread for a memorial, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

7Put pure frankincense beside each row. Frankincense is sweet-smelling sap from a tree. It goes with the bread and is burned as a gift to the LORD.

8Every sabbath he shall set it in order before the LORD continually, being taken from the children of Israel by an everlasting covenant.

8Every Sabbath, the rest day, fresh bread must be set out before the LORD. This is done for the people of Israel. It is a promise that lasts always.

9And it shall be Aaron’s and his sons’; and they shall eat it in the holy place: for it is most holy unto him of the offerings of the LORD made by fire by a perpetual statute.

9The bread belongs to Aaron and his sons. They must eat it in a holy place. It is a most holy part of the gifts burned for the LORD. It is theirs always."

10And the son of an Israelitish woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel: and this son of the Israelitish woman and a man of Israel strove together in the camp;

10One man had a mother from Israel and a father from Egypt. He went out among the people of Israel. He and a man of Israel started fighting in the camp.

11And the Israelitish woman’s son blasphemed the name of the Lord, and cursed. And they brought him unto Moses: (and his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan:)

11The son of the woman from Israel cursed. He said bad things against the name of the LORD. So the people brought him to Moses. His mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, from the family group of Dan.

12And they put him in ward, that the mind of the LORD might be shewed them.

12They kept the man locked up and guarded. They waited until the LORD showed them what to do.

NoteThe KJV says they "put him in ward." That means they kept him locked up and guarded, not that they punished him yet.

13And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

13Then the LORD spoke to Moses. He said this to him.

14Bring forth him that hath cursed without the camp; and let all that heard him lay their hands upon his head, and let all the congregation stone him.

14"Take the man who cursed outside the camp. Everyone who heard him must lay their hands on his head. Then the whole group must throw stones at him until he dies.

15And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, Whosoever curseth his God shall bear his sin.

15Tell the people of Israel this. Anyone who curses his God must carry the guilt for that sin.

16And he that blasphemeth the name of the LORD, he shall surely be put to death, and all the congregation shall certainly stone him: as well the stranger, as he that is born in the land, when he blasphemeth the name of the Lord, shall be put to death.

16Anyone who says bad things against the name of the LORD must be put to death. The whole group must throw stones at him. This is the same for a foreigner living with you and for someone born in the land.

17And he that killeth any man shall surely be put to death.

17Anyone who kills another person must be put to death.

18And he that killeth a beast shall make it good; beast for beast.

18Anyone who kills someone else's animal must pay for it. He must give one animal for the animal.

19And if a man cause a blemish in his neighbour; as he hath done, so shall it be done to him;

19If a person hurts his neighbour, the same must be done to him.

20Breach for breach, eye for eye, tooth for tooth: as he hath caused a blemish in a man, so shall it be done to him again.

20A broken bone for a broken bone, an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth. Whatever hurt he caused, that same hurt must be done to him.

21And he that killeth a beast, he shall restore it: and he that killeth a man, he shall be put to death.

21Whoever kills an animal must pay for it. Whoever kills a person must be put to death.

22Ye shall have one manner of law, as well for the stranger, as for one of your own country: for I am the LORD your God.

22You must have one law for everyone. It is the same for a foreigner and for your own people. I am the LORD your God."

23And Moses spake to the children of Israel, that they should bring forth him that had cursed out of the camp, and stone him with stones. And the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses.

23Moses told all this to the people of Israel. They took the man who had cursed outside the camp. They threw stones at him until he died. The people did what the LORD had told Moses.
