Genesis

And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the cattle that was with him in the ark: and God made a wind to pass over the earth, and the waters asswaged;

1God remembered Noah. He remembered every animal in the big boat too. God sent a wind over the earth. The water began to go down.

2The fountains also of the deep and the windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained;

2The springs deep under the ground were shut. The openings in the sky were shut too. The rain stopped falling.

3And the waters returned from off the earth continually: and after the end of the hundred and fifty days the waters were abated.

3The water kept going down, little by little. After 150 days, much of it was gone.

4And the ark rested in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains of Ararat.

4On the seventeenth day of the seventh month, the boat stopped moving. It came to rest on the mountains of Ararat.

NoteThe Bible here counts months from the start of Noah's year, not our calendar. Ararat is a mountain area in what is now eastern Turkey.

5And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month: in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains seen.

5The water kept going down until the tenth month. On the first day of that month, the mountain tops could be seen.

6And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the window of the ark which he had made:

6Forty days later, Noah opened the window he had made in the boat.

7And he sent forth a raven, which went forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth.

7He sent out a raven, a big black bird. It flew back and forth until the ground was dry.

8Also he sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face of the ground;

8Then Noah sent out a dove. He wanted to see if the water was gone from the ground.

9But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she returned unto him into the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole earth: then he put forth his hand, and took her, and pulled her in unto him into the ark.

9The dove could not find any dry place to land. So she came back to Noah in the boat. Water still covered the whole earth. Noah reached out his hand and brought her back inside.

10And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the dove out of the ark;

10Noah waited seven more days. Then he sent the dove out again.

11And the dove came in to him in the evening; and, lo, in her mouth was an olive leaf pluckt off: so Noah knew that the waters were abated from off the earth.

11That evening the dove came back to him. She had a fresh olive leaf in her beak. Now Noah knew the water was going away from the earth.

12And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; which returned not again unto him any more.

12Noah waited seven more days and sent the dove out again. This time she did not come back.

13And it came to pass in the six hundredth and first year, in the first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the earth: and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and, behold, the face of the ground was dry.

13Noah was now 601 years old. On the first day of the first month, the water was gone. Noah took the cover off the boat and looked out. The ground was dry.

14And in the second month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, was the earth dried.

14By the twenty-seventh day of the second month, the earth was all dry.

15And God spake unto Noah, saying,

15Then God spoke to Noah. God said,

16Go forth of the ark, thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

16"Come out of the boat. Bring your wife, your sons, and your sons' wives.

17Bring forth with thee every living thing that is with thee, of all flesh, both of fowl, and of cattle, and of every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth; that they may breed abundantly in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.

17Bring out every living thing that is with you. Bring the birds, the animals, and everything that crawls. Let them have many babies and fill the earth again."

18And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him:

18So Noah came out of the boat. His wife, his sons, and his sons' wives came out with him.

19Every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl, and whatsoever creepeth upon the earth, after their kinds, went forth out of the ark.

19Every animal, every crawling thing, and every bird came out too. They came out group by group, each with its own kind.

20And Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar.

20Then Noah built an altar for the LORD. An altar is a stone table used for gifts to God. He took some of the clean animals and clean birds. He burned them on the altar as a gift to God.

Note"Clean" animals were the kinds people were allowed to eat and to offer to God. Noah had taken extra of these onto the boat.

21And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man’s sake; for the imagination of man’s heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.

21The LORD smelled the pleasing smell. He said in his heart, "I will never again curse the ground because of people. Even so, people think bad thoughts from the time they are young. I will never again destroy every living thing, as I have done.

22While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

22As long as the earth lasts, these things will not stop. There will be planting time and harvest time. There will be cold and heat, summer and winter, day and night."
