Genesis

Chapter 5

This chapter is a family list. It goes from Adam all the way down to Noah. It tells how long each man lived and who his son was. Most of the men lived a very long time and then died. Two men are different: Enoch, who walked with God and was taken away, and Noah, whose name means comfort.

This is the book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the likeness of God made he him;

1This is the family list of Adam. When God made people, He made them like Himself.

"Generations" here means the list of a family, parents and children in order.

2Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

2God made them male and female. He blessed them. He called them "man" on the day He made them.

3And Adam lived an hundred and thirty years, and begat a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth:

3Adam was 130 years old when he had a son. The boy looked like his father. Adam named him Seth.

4And the days of Adam after he had begotten Seth were eight hundred years: and he begat sons and daughters:

4After Seth was born, Adam lived 800 more years. He had more sons and daughters.

5And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years: and he died.

9Enos was 90 years old when his son Cainan was born.

10And Enos lived after he begat Cainan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begat sons and daughters:

10After Cainan was born, Enos lived 815 more years. He had more sons and daughters.

11And all the days of Enos were nine hundred and five years: and he died.

11Enos lived 905 years in all. Then he died.

12Cainan was 70 years old when his son Mahalaleel was born.

17Mahalaleel lived 895 years in all. Then he died.

18And Jared lived an hundred sixty and two years, and he begat Enoch:

18Jared was 162 years old when his son Enoch was born.

19And Jared lived after he begat Enoch eight hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

19After Enoch was born, Jared lived 800 more years. He had more sons and daughters.

20And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years: and he died.

20Jared lived 962 years in all. Then he died.

22And Enoch walked with God after he begat Methuselah three hundred years, and begat sons and daughters:

22After Methuselah was born, Enoch walked with God for 300 years. He had more sons and daughters.

"Walked with God" is a way of saying someone lived close to God every day.

23And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years:

23Enoch lived 365 years in all.

24And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

24Enoch walked with God. Then he was gone, because God took him away.

28Lamech was 182 years old when he had a son.

29And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.

29He named the boy Noah. He said, "This one will comfort us in our hard work. The ground is hard to farm, because the LORD cursed it."

Noah's name sounds like the Hebrew word for rest or comfort. That is why Lamech says what he says.

30And Lamech lived after he begat Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begat sons and daughters:

30After Noah was born, Lamech lived 595 more years. He had more sons and daughters.

31And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years: and he died.

31Lamech lived 777 years in all. Then he died.

32And Noah was five hundred years old: and Noah begat Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

32Noah was 500 years old. He had three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
