Genesis 36

Now these are the generations of Esau, who is Edom.

1This is the family list of Esau. Esau was also called Edom.

2Esau took his wives of the daughters of Canaan; Adah the daughter of Elon the Hittite, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon the Hivite;

2Esau married women from the land of Canaan. One was Adah, the daughter of Elon the Hittite. Another was Aholibamah. She was the daughter of Anah and the granddaughter of Zibeon the Hivite.

3And Bashemath Ishmael’s daughter, sister of Nebajoth.

3He also married Bashemath. She was Ishmael's daughter and Nebajoth's sister.

4And Adah bare to Esau Eliphaz; and Bashemath bare Reuel;

4Adah gave birth to Eliphaz. Bashemath gave birth to Reuel.

5And Aholibamah bare Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah: these are the sons of Esau, which were born unto him in the land of Canaan.

5Aholibamah gave birth to Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. These sons of Esau were born in the land of Canaan.

6And Esau took his wives, and his sons, and his daughters, and all the persons of his house, and his cattle, and all his beasts, and all his substance, which he had got in the land of Canaan; and went into the country from the face of his brother Jacob.

6Esau took his wives, his sons, and his daughters. He took everyone who lived in his house. He took his cattle, his other animals, and all he owned in Canaan. Then he moved away to another land, away from his brother Jacob.

7For their riches were more than that they might dwell together; and the land wherein they were strangers could not bear them because of their cattle.

7The two brothers owned too much to live in one place. The land where they were living could not feed all their animals.

8Thus dwelt Esau in mount Seir: Esau is Edom.

8So Esau made his home in the hills of Seir. Esau was also called Edom.

9And these are the generations of Esau the father of the Edomites in mount Seir:

9This is the family list of Esau. He was the father of the people of Edom, who lived in the hills of Seir.

10These are the names of Esau’s sons; Eliphaz the son of Adah the wife of Esau, Reuel the son of Bashemath the wife of Esau.

10Here are the names of Esau's sons. Adah's son was Eliphaz. Bashemath's son was Reuel.

11And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz.

11The sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, Gatam, and Kenaz.

12And Timna was concubine to Eliphaz Esau’s son; and she bare to Eliphaz Amalek: these were the sons of Adah Esau’s wife.

12Eliphaz also had a woman named Timna. She was a second wife with a lower place in the family. She gave birth to Amalek. All of these came from Esau's wife Adah.

13And these are the sons of Reuel; Nahath, and Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah: these were the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

13The sons of Reuel were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. They came from Esau's wife Bashemath.

14And these were the sons of Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah the daughter of Zibeon, Esau’s wife: and she bare to Esau Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

14These were the sons of Esau's wife Aholibamah. She was Anah's daughter and Zibeon's granddaughter. She gave Esau three sons: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.

15These were dukes of the sons of Esau: the sons of Eliphaz the firstborn son of Esau; duke Teman, duke Omar, duke Zepho, duke Kenaz,

15Some of Esau's family became chiefs, the leaders of family groups. From Eliphaz, Esau's oldest son, came chief Teman, chief Omar, chief Zepho, and chief Kenaz.

NoteThe King James Bible says "duke" here. In 1611 that word simply meant the leader of a family group or clan. It does not mean a rich nobleman like a duke in a fairy tale.

16Duke Korah, duke Gatam, and duke Amalek: these are the dukes that came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these were the sons of Adah.

16Also chief Korah, chief Gatam, and chief Amalek. These chiefs came from Eliphaz in the land of Edom. They belonged to Adah's family.

17And these are the sons of Reuel Esau’s son; duke Nahath, duke Zerah, duke Shammah, duke Mizzah: these are the dukes that came of Reuel in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Bashemath Esau’s wife.

17These sons of Esau's son Reuel were chiefs: Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah. They led family groups in the land of Edom. They belonged to the family of Esau's wife Bashemath.

18And these are the sons of Aholibamah Esau’s wife; duke Jeush, duke Jaalam, duke Korah: these were the dukes that came of Aholibamah the daughter of Anah, Esau’s wife.

18These sons of Esau's wife Aholibamah were chiefs: Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah. They came from Aholibamah, the daughter of Anah.

19These are the sons of Esau, who is Edom, and these are their dukes.

19These were the sons of Esau, who was also called Edom. These were their chiefs.

20These are the sons of Seir the Horite, who inhabited the land; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah,

20Other people had lived in that land before. These are the sons of Seir the Horite: Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, and Anah,

21And Dishon, and Ezer, and Dishan: these are the dukes of the Horites, the children of Seir in the land of Edom.

21and Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. They were the chiefs of the Horites, the family of Seir, in the land of Edom.

22And the children of Lotan were Hori and Hemam; and Lotan’s sister was Timna.

22Lotan's sons were Hori and Hemam. Lotan's sister was Timna.

23And the children of Shobal were these; Alvan, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

23Shobal's sons were Alvan, Manahath, Ebal, Shepho, and Onam.

24And these are the children of Zibeon; both Ajah, and Anah: this was that Anah that found the mules in the wilderness, as he fed the asses of Zibeon his father.

24Zibeon's sons were Ajah and Anah. This is the Anah who found hot springs of water in the desert. He was out feeding his father Zibeon's donkeys.

NoteThe King James Bible says Anah found "mules." The old Hebrew word is unclear, but it most likely means hot springs of water.

25And the children of Anah were these; Dishon, and Aholibamah the daughter of Anah.

25Anah's children were Dishon and a daughter named Aholibamah.

26And these are the children of Dishon; Hemdan, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

26Dishon's sons were Hemdan, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.

27The children of Ezer are these; Bilhan, and Zaavan, and Akan.

27Ezer's sons were Bilhan, Zaavan, and Akan.

28The children of Dishan are these; Uz, and Aran.

28Dishan's sons were Uz and Aran.

29These are the dukes that came of the Horites; duke Lotan, duke Shobal, duke Zibeon, duke Anah,

29These were the chiefs of the Horites: chief Lotan, chief Shobal, chief Zibeon, chief Anah,

30Duke Dishon, duke Ezer, duke Dishan: these are the dukes that came of Hori, among their dukes in the land of Seir.

30chief Dishon, chief Ezer, and chief Dishan. They led the Horite family groups in the land of Seir.

31And these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom, before there reigned any king over the children of Israel.

31Kings ruled in the land of Edom before Israel ever had a king. Here they are.

32And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

32Bela son of Beor ruled in Edom. His city was called Dinhabah.

33And Bela died, and Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.

33When Bela died, Jobab became king in his place. He was Zerah's son, from the town of Bozrah.

34And Jobab died, and Husham of the land of Temani reigned in his stead.

34When Jobab died, Husham became king in his place. He came from the land of Teman.

35And Husham died, and Hadad the son of Bedad, who smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

35When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad became king in his place. He had beaten the people of Midian in a battle in Moab. His city was called Avith.

36And Hadad died, and Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

36When Hadad died, Samlah became king in his place. He came from Masrekah.

37And Samlah died, and Saul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

37When Samlah died, Saul became king in his place. He came from Rehoboth, beside the river.

Note"The river" here means the Euphrates, a very large river far to the north and east.

38And Saul died, and Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

38When Saul died, Baalhanan son of Achbor became king in his place.

39And Baalhanan the son of Achbor died, and Hadar reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pau; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

39When Baalhanan son of Achbor died, Hadar became king in his place. His city was called Pau. His wife was named Mehetabel. She was Matred's daughter and Mezahab's granddaughter.

40And these are the names of the dukes that came of Esau, according to their families, after their places, by their names; duke Timnah, duke Alvah, duke Jetheth,

40Here are the names of the chiefs who came from Esau. Each one led his own family group in his own place. They were chief Timnah, chief Alvah, chief Jetheth,

41Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

41chief Aholibamah, chief Elah, chief Pinon,

42Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

42chief Kenaz, chief Teman, chief Mibzar,

43Duke Magdiel, duke Iram: these be the dukes of Edom, according to their habitations in the land of their possession: he is Esau the father of the Edomites.

43chief Magdiel, and chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, listed by the places where they lived. Esau was the father of the people of Edom.
