Exodus

And Moses gathered all the congregation of the children of Israel together, and said unto them, These are the words which the LORD hath commanded, that ye should do them.

1Moses called all the people of Israel together. He said, "Here is what the LORD has told you to do."

2Six days shall work be done, but on the seventh day there shall be to you an holy day, a sabbath of rest to the LORD: whosoever doeth work therein shall be put to death.

2"You may work for six days. The seventh day is a holy day for you. It is a Sabbath, a day of rest for the LORD. Anyone who works on that day must be put to death."

3Ye shall kindle no fire throughout your habitations upon the sabbath day.

3"Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day."

4And Moses spake unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, This is the thing which the LORD commanded, saying,

4Moses also said to all the people of Israel, "This is what the LORD has commanded."

5Take ye from among you an offering unto the LORD: whosoever is of a willing heart, let him bring it, an offering of the LORD; gold, and silver, and brass,

5"Bring a gift to the LORD. Anyone who wants to give may bring gold, silver, and bronze."

6And blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair,

6"Bring blue, purple, and red yarn. Bring fine cloth and goat hair."

7And rams’ skins dyed red, and badgers’ skins, and shittim wood,

7"Bring ram skins dyed red, fine leather, and acacia wood."

Note"Shittim wood" is wood from the acacia tree. "Badgers' skins" in the old wording most likely means fine leather.

8And oil for the light, and spices for anointing oil, and for the sweet incense,

8"Bring olive oil for the lamps. Bring sweet spices for the holy oil and for the incense that smells good when it burns."

9And onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod, and for the breastplate.

9"Bring onyx stones and other pretty stones. They go on the ephod, the priest's special vest, and on his chest piece."

10And every wise hearted among you shall come, and make all that the LORD hath commanded;

10"Everyone here who is skilled at making things should come. They will make everything the LORD asked for."

11The tabernacle, his tent, and his covering, his taches, and his boards, his bars, his pillars, and his sockets,

11"Make the tabernacle, God's holy tent. Make its cover, its clasps, its frames, its crossbars, its posts, and its bases."

12The ark, and the staves thereof, with the mercy seat, and the vail of the covering,

12"Make the ark, the holy box, and the poles for carrying it. Make its cover, called the mercy seat. Make the curtain that hides it."

13The table, and his staves, and all his vessels, and the shewbread,

13"Make the table and its carrying poles. Make all its dishes. Set out the special bread."

NoteThe "shewbread" was special bread that was always kept on the table inside God's tent.

14The candlestick also for the light, and his furniture, and his lamps, with the oil for the light,

14"Make the lampstand that gives light. Make its parts, its lamps, and bring the oil for the lamps."

15And the incense altar, and his staves, and the anointing oil, and the sweet incense, and the hanging for the door at the entering in of the tabernacle,

15"Make the altar for burning incense and its poles. Make the holy oil and the sweet incense. Make the curtain for the tent door."

16The altar of burnt offering, with his brasen grate, his staves, and all his vessels, the laver and his foot,

16"Make the altar where gifts are burned. Make its bronze grate, its poles, and its tools. Make the washing bowl and its stand."

17The hangings of the court, his pillars, and their sockets, and the hanging for the door of the court,

17"Make the curtains that go around the yard. Make their posts and bases, and the curtain for the gate."

18The pins of the tabernacle, and the pins of the court, and their cords,

18"Make the tent pegs for the tabernacle and for the yard, and their ropes."

19The cloths of service, to do service in the holy place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest’s office.

19"Make the woven clothes worn for serving in the holy place. Make the holy clothes for Aaron the priest and for his sons."

20And all the congregation of the children of Israel departed from the presence of Moses.

20Then all the people of Israel left Moses and went away.

21And they came, every one whose heart stirred him up, and every one whom his spirit made willing, and they brought the LORD’s offering to the work of the tabernacle of the congregation, and for all his service, and for the holy garments.

21Everyone who wanted to help came back. They brought gifts to the LORD for the holy tent, for its work, and for the holy clothes.

22And they came, both men and women, as many as were willing hearted, and brought bracelets, and earrings, and rings, and tablets, all jewels of gold: and every man that offered offered an offering of gold unto the LORD.

22Men and women came, all who were glad to give. They brought pins, earrings, rings, necklaces, and other gold. Each one gave his gold to the LORD.

23And every man, with whom was found blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ hair, and red skins of rams, and badgers’ skins, brought them.

23Everyone who had blue, purple, or red yarn brought it. So did those who had fine cloth, goat hair, red ram skins, or fine leather.

24Every one that did offer an offering of silver and brass brought the LORD’s offering: and every man, with whom was found shittim wood for any work of the service, brought it.

24Everyone who could give silver or bronze brought it to the LORD. Everyone who had acacia wood for the work brought that too.

25And all the women that were wise hearted did spin with their hands, and brought that which they had spun, both of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and of fine linen.

25All the skilled women spun yarn with their own hands. They brought what they made: blue, purple, and red yarn, and fine cloth.

26And all the women whose heart stirred them up in wisdom spun goats’ hair.

26All the women who wanted to help used their skill to spin goat hair.

27And the rulers brought onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod, and for the breastplate;

27The leaders brought onyx stones and other pretty stones. These were for the priest's vest and his chest piece.

28And spice, and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense.

28They also brought spices and olive oil for the lamps, for the holy oil, and for the sweet incense.

29The children of Israel brought a willing offering unto the LORD, every man and woman, whose heart made them willing to bring for all manner of work, which the LORD had commanded to be made by the hand of Moses.

29So the people of Israel gave because they wanted to. Every man and woman who felt willing brought gifts. It was all for the work the LORD had told Moses about.

30And Moses said unto the children of Israel, See, the LORD hath called by name Bezaleel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah;

30Then Moses said to the people, "Look, the LORD has chosen Bezaleel by name. He is the son of Uri, the son of Hur, from the family group of Judah."

31And he hath filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship;

31"God has filled him with his Spirit. He gave him skill, good sense, and knowledge for every kind of work."

32And to devise curious works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in brass,

32"He can plan lovely designs and make them in gold, silver, and bronze."

NoteIn the old wording, "curious" and "cunning" work means carefully planned, skillful work. It does not mean odd or sneaky.

33And in the cutting of stones, to set them, and in carving of wood, to make any manner of cunning work.

33"He can cut stones and set them in place. He can carve wood. He can do every kind of skilled work."

34And he hath put in his heart that he may teach, both he, and Aholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan.

34"God also gave him the gift of teaching others. He gave the same gift to Aholiab, son of Ahisamach, from the family group of Dan."

35Them hath he filled with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of work, of the engraver, and of the cunning workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of them that do any work, and of those that devise cunning work.

35"God has filled them both with skill for every kind of work. They can carve, plan designs, and sew pictures into blue, purple, and red yarn and fine cloth. They can weave, and they can plan any skilled work."
