1 Enoch 51
What Happens in This Chapter
This short chapter says that in those days the earth, Sheol, and hell will give back the dead they hold, and the Elect One will rise and choose the righteous and holy from among them, because the day of their being saved has come near. The Elect One sits on God's throne and speaks out all the secrets of wisdom and counsel, which the Lord of Spirits has given him along with glory. The chapter ends with the mountains and hills leaping, the angels' faces shining with joy, the earth glad, and the righteous and the chosen living and walking on it.
In those days the earth will also give back what was placed in it for safekeeping, and Sheol will also give back what it received, and hell will give back what it owes. For in those days the Elect One will rise up.
1And in those days shall the earth also give back that which has been entrusted to it, And Sheol also shall give back that which it has received, And hell shall give back that which it owes. 5a. For in those days the Elect One shall arise,
"Sheol" is the place of the dead. The verse pictures the earth, Sheol, and hell as holding the dead like something handed over to be kept, and now handing them back. The verse numbering here is uneven: the first part of verse 5 is printed at the end of verse 1, and the rest of verse 5 at the end of verse 4.
2And he will choose the righteous and holy from among them, because the day has come near when they should be saved.
2And he shall choose the righteous and holy from among them: For the day has drawn nigh that they should be saved.
3And in those days the Elect One will sit on my throne, and his mouth will pour out all the secrets of wisdom and good counsel, because the Lord of Spirits has given them to him and has given him glory.
3And the Elect One shall in those days sit on My throne, And his mouth shall pour forth all the secrets of wisdom and counsel: For the Lord of Spirits hath given (them) to him and hath glorified him.
"The Elect One" means "the Chosen One," a title used through this part of the book. "The Lord of Spirits" is a title for God used all through these chapters.
4And in those days the mountains will leap like rams, and the hills will skip like lambs that have had all the milk they want, and the faces of all the angels in heaven will be lit up with joy. And the earth will be glad, and the righteous will live on it, and the chosen ones will walk on it.
4And in those days shall the mountains leap like rams, And the hills also shall skip like lambs satisfied with milk, And the faces of all the angels in heaven shall be lighted up with joy. 5b. And the earth shall rejoice, c. And the righteous shall dwell upon it, d. And the elect shall walk thereon.
