1 Enoch 49

What Happens in This Chapter

This short chapter describes the Elect One, who stands before the Lord of Spirits. It says wisdom is poured out like water and that glory before him never fails, that he is mighty in all the secrets of righteousness, and that unrighteousness will vanish like a shadow. It lists the spirits that live in him and says he will judge hidden things, with no one able to speak a lie in front of him.

Wisdom is poured out like water, and glory never fails in his presence, for all time.

1For wisdom is poured out like water, And glory faileth not before him for evermore.

2He is mighty in every secret of what is right, and wrongdoing will vanish like a shadow and will not last. This is because the Elect One stands in front of the Lord of Spirits, and his glory lasts forever and ever, and his might lasts through every generation.

2For he is mighty in all the secrets of righteousness, And unrighteousness shall disappear as a shadow, And have no continuance; Because the Elect One standeth before the Lord of Spirits, And his glory is for ever and ever, And his might unto all generations.

"Elect" means chosen. "The Elect One" is a title used in this book for the one God has chosen.

3Living in him are the spirit of wisdom, the spirit that gives insight, the spirit of understanding and of might, and the spirit of those who have died in righteousness.

3And in him dwells the spirit of wisdom, And the spirit which gives insight, And the spirit of understanding and of might, And the spirit of those who have fallen asleep in righteousness.

"Fallen asleep" is an old way of saying died. It is rendered here as "have died."

4He will judge the things that are hidden, and no one will be able to speak a lying word in front of him, for he is the Elect One before the Lord of Spirits, chosen as it pleased him.

4And he shall judge the secret things, And none shall be able to utter a lying word before him; For he is the Elect One before the Lord of Spirits according to His good pleasure.
