1 Enoch 43

What Happens in This Chapter

Enoch sees flashes of lightning and the stars of the sky, and watches them all called by their names and answering. He sees how they are weighed by their measures of light, how far apart their spaces are, when they appear, and how their turning makes lightning and matches the number of the angels. He asks the angel traveling with him what they are, and the angel tells him the Lord of Spirits has shown him their parable: they are the names of the holy who live on the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits forever.

And I saw more flashes of lightning, and the stars of the sky. I saw how he called them all by their names, and they listened to him.

1And I saw other lightnings and the stars of heaven, and I saw how He called them all by their names and they hearkened unto Him.

"The Lord of Spirits" is the title this book uses most often for God.

2And I saw how they are weighed on an honest set of scales, by how much light each one has. I saw how wide their spaces are, and the day when each one appears, and how their turning makes lightning. I also saw that their turning matches the number of the angels, and how they keep faith with one another.

2And I saw how they are weighed in a righteous balance according to their proportions of light: (I saw) the width of their spaces and the day of their appearing, and how their revolution produces lightning: and (I saw) their revolution according to the number of the angels, and (how) they keep faith with each other.

A "balance" is a set of scales for weighing things.

3And I asked the angel who was traveling with me, the one who showed me what was hidden, "What are these?"

3And I asked the angel who went with me who showed me what was hidden: ‘What are these?’

4And he said to me, "The Lord of Spirits has shown you what they stand for. These are the names of the holy ones who live on the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits forever and ever."

4And he said to me: ‘The Lord of Spirits hath showed thee their parabolic meaning (lit. 'their parable'): these are the names of the holy who dwell on the earth and believe in the name of the Lord of Spirits for ever and ever.’

The word behind "what they stand for" is "parable": the stars are a picture of something else, and the angel is explaining what that something is.
