1 Enoch 4
What Happens in This Chapter
This one-verse chapter tells the hearers to look at the days of summer. It describes the sun standing above the earth, facing it, people looking for shade and shelter because of the sun's heat, and the ground growing hot enough that it cannot be walked on. It is one of a series of calls to observe how the parts of the natural world keep to their appointed pattern.
And again, look at the days of summer, and see how the sun is above the earth, facing it. You look for shade and shelter because of the sun's heat, and the ground burns with rising heat, so that you cannot walk on the earth, or on a rock, because of how hot it is.
1And again, observe ye the days of summer how the sun is above the earth over against it. And you seek shade and shelter by reason of the heat of the sun, and the earth also burns with growing heat, and so you cannot tread on the earth, or on a rock by reason of its heat.
"Over against it" is old English for facing it or standing opposite it. "Tread on" simply means walk on.
