1 Enoch 16

What Happens in This Chapter

The speech that began earlier continues: from the time the giants were killed, the spirits that came out of their bodies will go on destroying without any judgment falling on them, until the day of the end, the great judgment that finishes the age over the Watchers and the godless. Then comes a message for the watchers who sent the hearer to plead for them. They were in heaven, but not all the mysteries had been revealed to them; they knew worthless ones and told these to the women, and through these mysteries women and men do much evil on earth. The message closes with the words "You have no peace."

From the days when the giants were slaughtered and destroyed and died, the spirits came out of their bodies of flesh, and they will destroy without any judgment coming upon them. They will go on destroying like this until the day when everything is brought to an end (the great judgment in which the age will be finished, the judgment on the Watchers and on the godless) yes, it will be completely finished."

1From the days of the slaughter and destruction and death of the giants, from the souls of whose flesh the spirits, having gone forth, shall destroy without incurring judgement—thus shall they destroy until the day of the consummation, the great judgement in which the age shall be consummated, over the Watchers and the godless, yea, shall be wholly consummated."

"Watchers" is the name this book uses for the angels it has been speaking about in these chapters.

2And now, about the watchers who sent you to plead for them, the ones who were in heaven before this, say this to them:

2And now as to the watchers who have sent thee to intercede for them, who had been aforetime in heaven, (say to them):

3"You were in heaven, but all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to you, and you knew worthless ones, and in the hardness of your hearts you made these known to the women, and through these mysteries women and men do much evil on the earth."

3“You have been in heaven, but all the mysteries had not yet been revealed to you, and you knew worthless ones, and these in the hardness of your hearts you have made known to the women, and through these mysteries women and men work much evil on earth."

"You knew worthless ones" is obscure in the text. Other copies of this book read "you knew a worthless mystery," meaning a piece of knowledge that was of no value.

4So say to them: "You have no peace."'

4Say to them therefore: “You have no peace.”’
