1 Enoch 11

What Happens in This Chapter

In two verses the speaker promises that in those days he will open the storerooms of blessing that are in heaven and pour them down on the earth, on the work and labor of people. The second verse says that truth and peace will be joined together for all the days of the world and all human generations. The chapter closes the section of promises about the time to come.

1"And in those days I will open the storerooms of blessing that are in heaven, and send them down onto the earth, over the work and the labor of human beings.

1And in those days I will open the store chambers of blessing which are in the heaven, so as to send them down upon the earth over the work and labour of the children of men.

The heavenly "storerooms" (Charles: "store chambers") are a standard ancient image: chambers in the sky where rain, dew, snow, hail and wind are kept until God releases them. Opening them means sending rain. "Blessing" here is concrete, not abstract; it is the water that makes crops grow, which is why it comes down "over the work and the labor of human beings," that is, over their fields and their farming.

2And truth and peace will be joined together through all the days of the world and through all the generations of human beings."

2And truth and peace shall be associated together throughout all the days of the world and throughout all the generations of men.’

The closing quotation mark ends the long speech that began several chapters earlier, in which God gives orders to the angels about the flood, the imprisonment of the Watchers, and the cleansing and renewal of the earth. Verses 1 and 2 are its final words, and the narration resumes in the next chapter.
