1 Chronicles 3

Now these were the sons of David, which were born unto him in Hebron; the firstborn Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess:

1These were David's sons who were born in the city of Hebron. The oldest was Amnon. His mother was Ahinoam from the town of Jezreel. The second was Daniel. His mother was Abigail from the town of Carmel.

2The third, Absalom the son of Maachah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur: the fourth, Adonijah the son of Haggith:

2The third son was Absalom. His mother was Maachah. She was the daughter of Talmai, the king of Geshur. The fourth son was Adonijah. His mother was Haggith.

3The fifth, Shephatiah of Abital: the sixth, Ithream by Eglah his wife.

3The fifth son was Shephatiah. His mother was Abital. The sixth son was Ithream. His mother was Eglah, David's wife.

4These six were born unto him in Hebron; and there he reigned seven years and six months: and in Jerusalem he reigned thirty and three years.

4These six sons were born to David in Hebron. He ruled as king there for seven years and six months. Then he ruled in the city of Jerusalem for thirty-three years.

5And these were born unto him in Jerusalem; Shimea, and Shobab, and Nathan, and Solomon, four, of Bathshua the daughter of Ammiel:

5These sons were born to David in Jerusalem. They were Shimea, Shobab, Nathan, and Solomon. All four had the same mother, Bathsheba. She was the daughter of Ammiel.

6Ibhar also, and Elishama, and Eliphelet,

6David also had these sons: Ibhar, Elishama, and Eliphelet.

7And Nogah, and Nepheg, and Japhia,

7He also had Nogah, Nepheg, and Japhia.

8And Elishama, and Eliada, and Eliphelet, nine.

8He also had Elishama, Eliada, and Eliphelet. That makes nine sons in this list.

9These were all the sons of David, beside the sons of the concubines, and Tamar their sister.

9These were all of David's sons. He also had sons by his other wives, who had a lower place in the family. Tamar was their sister.

NoteThe King James Bible calls these women "concubines." They lived with the king as wives, but they and their children did not have the same rights as the main wives and their sons.

10And Solomon’s son was Rehoboam, Abia his son, Asa his son, Jehoshaphat his son,

10Solomon's son was Rehoboam. His son was Abia. His son was Asa. His son was Jehoshaphat.

11Joram his son, Ahaziah his son, Joash his son,

11Jehoshaphat's son was Joram. His son was Ahaziah. His son was Joash.

12Amaziah his son, Azariah his son, Jotham his son,

12Joash's son was Amaziah. His son was Azariah. His son was Jotham.

13Ahaz his son, Hezekiah his son, Manasseh his son,

13Jotham's son was Ahaz. His son was Hezekiah. His son was Manasseh.

14Amon his son, Josiah his son.

14Manasseh's son was Amon. Amon's son was Josiah.

15And the sons of Josiah were, the firstborn Johanan, the second Jehoiakim, the third Zedekiah, the fourth Shallum.

15Josiah had four sons. The oldest was Johanan. The second was Jehoiakim. The third was Zedekiah. The fourth was Shallum.

16And the sons of Jehoiakim: Jeconiah his son, Zedekiah his son.

16Jehoiakim's son was Jeconiah. After him came Zedekiah.

17And the sons of Jeconiah; Assir, Salathiel his son,

17These came from Jeconiah, who was taken away as a prisoner. His sons were Assir and Salathiel.

NoteJeconiah was a king of Judah. An army from Babylon took him and many others far from home. Being "the captive" means he was a prisoner in that faraway land.

18Malchiram also, and Pedaiah, and Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.

18The others were Malchiram, Pedaiah, Shenazar, Jecamiah, Hoshama, and Nedabiah.

19And the sons of Pedaiah were, Zerubbabel, and Shimei: and the sons of Zerubbabel; Meshullam, and Hananiah, and Shelomith their sister:

19Pedaiah's sons were Zerubbabel and Shimei. Zerubbabel's children were Meshullam and Hananiah. Their sister was Shelomith.

20And Hashubah, and Ohel, and Berechiah, and Hasadiah, Jushabhesed, five.

20There were five more: Hashubah, Ohel, Berechiah, Hasadiah, and Jushabhesed.

21And the sons of Hananiah; Pelatiah, and Jesaiah: the sons of Rephaiah, the sons of Arnan, the sons of Obadiah, the sons of Shechaniah.

21Hananiah's sons were Pelatiah and Jesaiah. Their family line went on through Rephaiah, Arnan, Obadiah, and Shechaniah, and their sons.

22And the sons of Shechaniah; Shemaiah: and the sons of Shemaiah; Hattush, and Igeal, and Bariah, and Neariah, and Shaphat, six.

22Shechaniah's son was Shemaiah. Shemaiah's sons were Hattush, Igeal, Bariah, Neariah, and Shaphat. That makes six in all.

23And the sons of Neariah; Elioenai, and Hezekiah, and Azrikam, three.

23Neariah's sons were Elioenai, Hezekiah, and Azrikam. That makes three.

24And the sons of Elioenai were, Hodaiah, and Eliashib, and Pelaiah, and Akkub, and Johanan, and Dalaiah, and Anani, seven.

24Elioenai's sons were Hodaiah, Eliashib, Pelaiah, Akkub, Johanan, Dalaiah, and Anani. That makes seven.
