1 Chronicles

Chapter 1

This chapter is one long family list. It starts with Adam and goes down through Noah's sons to Abraham. Then it follows Abraham's sons Isaac and Ishmael, and Isaac's sons Esau and Israel. It ends with the kings and chiefs who ruled in Edom, the land of Esau's family.

Adam, Sheth, Enosh,

1This family list starts with Adam. His son was Sheth. Sheth's son was Enosh.

2Kenan, Mahalaleel, Jered,

2Next came Kenan, then Mahalaleel, then Jered. Each one was the son of the man before him.

3Henoch, Methuselah, Lamech,

3Then came Henoch, then Methuselah, then Lamech. Each was the son of the man before him.

4Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

4Then came Noah. Noah's sons were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

5The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

5Japheth's sons were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

6And the sons of Gomer; Ashchenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

6Gomer's sons were Ashchenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

7And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

7Javan's sons were Elishah and Tarshish. The Kittim and the Dodanim also came from him.

8The sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

8Ham's sons were Cush, Mizraim, Put, and Canaan.

9And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabta, and Raamah, and Sabtecha. And the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

9Cush's sons were Seba, Havilah, Sabta, Raamah, and Sabtecha. Raamah's sons were Sheba and Dedan.

10And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be mighty upon the earth.

10Cush was also the father of Nimrod. Nimrod grew to be a strong and powerful man on the earth.

11And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

11Mizraim was the father of these groups of people: the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehabim, and the Naphtuhim.

Many names here end in -im or -ite. They are names for whole groups of people, not one person.

12And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (of whom came the Philistines,) and Caphthorim.

12He was also the father of the Pathrusim, the Casluhim, and the Caphthorim. The Philistines came from the Casluhim.

13And Canaan begat Zidon his firstborn, and Heth,

13Canaan's first son was Zidon. His next son was Heth.

14The Jebusite also, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite,

14From Canaan also came the Jebusites, the Amorites, and the Girgashites.

15And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

15From him came the Hivites, the Arkites, and the Sinites too.

16And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite.

16And from him came the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites.

17The sons of Shem; Elam, and Asshur, and Arphaxad, and Lud, and Aram, and Uz, and Hul, and Gether, and Meshech.

17Shem's sons were Elam, Asshur, Arphaxad, Lud, and Aram. Uz, Hul, Gether, and Meshech were also in this family.

18And Arphaxad begat Shelah, and Shelah begat Eber.

18Arphaxad was the father of Shelah. Shelah was the father of Eber.

19And unto Eber were born two sons: the name of the one was Peleg; because in his days the earth was divided: and his brother’s name was Joktan.

19Eber had two sons. One was named Peleg, because in his time the earth was divided. His brother was Joktan.

20And Joktan begat Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and Jerah,

20Joktan was the father of Almodad, Sheleph, Hazarmaveth, and Jerah.

21Hadoram also, and Uzal, and Diklah,

21He was also the father of Hadoram, Uzal, and Diklah.

22And Ebal, and Abimael, and Sheba,

22He was the father of Ebal, Abimael, and Sheba too.

23And Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab. All these were the sons of Joktan.

23And he was the father of Ophir, Havilah, and Jobab. All these were Joktan's sons.

24Shem, Arphaxad, Shelah,

24Now here is the line from Shem. Shem, then his son Arphaxad, then Arphaxad's son Shelah.

25Eber, Peleg, Reu,

25Then came Eber, then Peleg, then Reu. Each was the son of the man before him.

26Serug, Nahor, Terah,

26Then came Serug, then Nahor, then Terah.

27Abram; the same is Abraham.

27Then came Abram. Abram is the same man who was later called Abraham.

28The sons of Abraham; Isaac, and Ishmael.

28Abraham's sons were Isaac and Ishmael.

29These are their generations: The firstborn of Ishmael, Nebaioth; then Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam,

29Here are their families. Ishmael's first son was Nebaioth. Then came Kedar, Adbeel, and Mibsam.

30Mishma, and Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema,

30Then came Mishma, Dumah, Massa, Hadad, and Tema.

31Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These are the sons of Ishmael.

31Then came Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah. These were the sons of Ishmael.

32Now the sons of Keturah, Abraham’s concubine: she bare Zimran, and Jokshan, and Medan, and Midian, and Ishbak, and Shuah. And the sons of Jokshan; Sheba, and Dedan.

32Keturah was Abraham's concubine. Her sons were Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah. Jokshan's sons were Sheba and Dedan.

A concubine was a wife who had a lower place in the family than a first wife.

33And the sons of Midian; Ephah, and Epher, and Henoch, and Abida, and Eldaah. All these are the sons of Keturah.

33Midian's sons were Ephah, Epher, Henoch, Abida, and Eldaah. All these came from Keturah.

34And Abraham begat Isaac. The sons of Isaac; Esau and Israel.

34Abraham was the father of Isaac. Isaac's sons were Esau and Israel.

35The sons of Esau; Eliphaz, Reuel, and Jeush, and Jaalam, and Korah.

35Esau's sons were Eliphaz, Reuel, Jeush, Jaalam, and Korah.

36The sons of Eliphaz; Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek.

36Eliphaz's sons were Teman, Omar, Zephi, Gatam, Kenaz, Timna, and Amalek.

37The sons of Reuel; Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

37Reuel's sons were Nahath, Zerah, Shammah, and Mizzah.

38And the sons of Seir; Lotan, and Shobal, and Zibeon, and Anah, and Dishon, and Ezar, and Dishan.

38Seir's sons were Lotan, Shobal, Zibeon, Anah, Dishon, Ezar, and Dishan.

39And the sons of Lotan; Hori, and Homam: and Timna was Lotan’s sister.

39Lotan's sons were Hori and Homam. Timna was Lotan's sister.

40The sons of Shobal; Alian, and Manahath, and Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. And the sons of Zibeon; Aiah, and Anah.

40Shobal's sons were Alian, Manahath, Ebal, Shephi, and Onam. Zibeon's sons were Aiah and Anah.

41The sons of Anah; Dishon. And the sons of Dishon; Amram, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran.

41Anah's son was Dishon. Dishon's sons were Amram, Eshban, Ithran, and Cheran.

42The sons of Ezer; Bilhan, and Zavan, and Jakan. The sons of Dishan; Uz, and Aran.

42Ezer's sons were Bilhan, Zavan, and Jakan. Dishan's sons were Uz and Aran.

43Now these are the kings that reigned in the land of Edom before any king reigned over the children of Israel; Bela the son of Beor: and the name of his city was Dinhabah.

43These kings ruled in the land of Edom before Israel ever had a king. First was Bela son of Beor. His city was called Dinhabah.

44And when Bela was dead, Jobab the son of Zerah of Bozrah reigned in his stead.

44When Bela died, Jobab son of Zerah became king after him. Jobab came from the town of Bozrah.

45And when Jobab was dead, Husham of the land of the Temanites reigned in his stead.

45When Jobab died, Husham became king after him. He came from the land of the Temanites.

46And when Husham was dead, Hadad the son of Bedad, which smote Midian in the field of Moab, reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Avith.

46When Husham died, Hadad son of Bedad became king after him. Hadad had beaten Midian in a battle in Moab. His city was called Avith.

47And when Hadad was dead, Samlah of Masrekah reigned in his stead.

47When Hadad died, Samlah from the town of Masrekah became king after him.

48And when Samlah was dead, Shaul of Rehoboth by the river reigned in his stead.

48When Samlah died, Shaul became king after him. He came from Rehoboth, a town beside the river.

49And when Shaul was dead, Baalhanan the son of Achbor reigned in his stead.

49When Shaul died, Baalhanan son of Achbor became king after him.

50And when Baalhanan was dead, Hadad reigned in his stead: and the name of his city was Pai; and his wife’s name was Mehetabel, the daughter of Matred, the daughter of Mezahab.

50When Baalhanan died, Hadad became king after him. His city was called Pai. His wife was Mehetabel, daughter of Matred, who was the daughter of Mezahab.

51Hadad died also. And the dukes of Edom were; duke Timnah, duke Aliah, duke Jetheth,

51Then Hadad died too. These were the chiefs of Edom: Timnah, Aliah, and Jetheth.

The King James Bible says "duke" here. It does not mean a duke like in a kingdom today. It means the leader of a family group or clan.

52Duke Aholibamah, duke Elah, duke Pinon,

52Also chief Aholibamah, chief Elah, and chief Pinon.

53Duke Kenaz, duke Teman, duke Mibzar,

53Also chief Kenaz, chief Teman, and chief Mibzar.

54Duke Magdiel, duke Iram. These are the dukes of Edom.

54And chief Magdiel and chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom.
