Psalms

Chapter 98

This psalm calls everyone to sing a new song to the LORD because of the victory he has won. It says God has shown his saving power to Israel and to every nation on earth. Then it calls the whole world, including the sea, rivers, and hills, to make music and joyful noise, because God is coming to judge the earth fairly.

O sing unto the LORD a new song; for he hath done marvellous things: his right hand, and his holy arm, hath gotten him the victory.

1Sing a new song to the LORD, because he has done wonderful things. His own strong right hand won the victory.

2The LORD hath made known his salvation: his righteousness hath he openly shewed in the sight of the heathen.

2The LORD has shown everyone how he saves. He has let all the nations see that he does what is right.

3He hath remembered his mercy and his truth toward the house of Israel: all the ends of the earth have seen the salvation of our God.

3He remembered his love for the people of Israel, and he kept his promise to them. People everywhere on earth have seen how our God saves.

4Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and sing praise.

4Shout for joy to the LORD, everyone on earth. Shout out loud, be glad, and sing songs of praise.

5Sing unto the LORD with the harp; with the harp, and the voice of a psalm.

5Sing to the LORD with the harp. Play the harp, and lift your voices in song.

6With trumpets and sound of cornet make a joyful noise before the LORD, the King.

6Blow the trumpets and the ram's horn, and shout for joy before the LORD, the King.

The KJV word "cornet" here means a ram's horn, a curved animal horn blown like a trumpet, not the modern brass instrument.

7Let the sea roar, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

7Let the sea and everything in it roar. Let the world and everyone living in it join in.

8Let the floods clap their hands: let the hills be joyful together

8Let the rivers clap their hands. Let the hills sing together for joy

9Before the LORD; for he cometh to judge the earth: with righteousness shall he judge the world, and the people with equity.

9in front of the LORD, because he is coming to judge the earth. He will judge the world rightly and treat all people fairly.
