Psalms 95
What Happens in This Chapter
This psalm is a song that invites people to sing to God and thank him. It says God is great, and that he made the sea, the land, and the mountains. It calls people his sheep and asks them to kneel before him. Then God speaks and warns them not to act like their ancestors did in the desert long ago.

O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
1Come, let us sing to the LORD! Let us shout for joy to the Rock who saves us.
2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
2Let us come to him and say thank you. Let us shout for joy to him with songs.
3For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.

4In his hand are the deep places of the earth: the strength of the hills is his also.
4He holds the deepest places of the earth in his hand. The tops of the mountains belong to him too.
5The sea is his, and he made it: and his hands formed the dry land.

6O come, let us worship and bow down: let us kneel before the LORD our maker.

7For he is our God; and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. To day if ye will hear his voice,

8Harden not your heart, as in the provocation, and as in the day of temptation in the wilderness:
8do not close up your heart. Long ago your people did that at Meribah. They did it at Massah in the desert, a dry and empty land.
"Harden not your heart" means do not stop listening and refuse to change. Meribah and Massah are places in the desert where the people argued with God.
9When your fathers tempted me, proved me, and saw my work.
9There your grandparents' grandparents tested me to see what I would do. They had already seen the great things I did.
10Forty years long was I grieved with this generation, and said, It is a people that do err in their heart, and they have not known my ways:
10For forty years I was angry with those people. I said, "Their hearts keep turning away from me. They have not learned my ways."
11Unto whom I sware in my wrath that they should not enter into my rest.
11So I made a promise while I was angry. I said they would never come into my resting place.
