Chapter 93
This short psalm says that the LORD is king, and that his rule started before the world did and will not end. The rising floods and crashing sea waves are loud and strong, but God is stronger than all of them. The psalm closes by saying God's words can be trusted and his house is a holy place.
Plain reading written for preteens. Clear and complete, at about a fifth grade reading level.
The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved.
1The LORD is king. He wears majesty like a royal robe. The LORD is dressed in strength, like a belt he has tied around himself. The world stands firm because of him, and nothing can shake it loose.
"Stablished" is an old spelling of "established." It means set in place firmly, not shifted or built recently.
2Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.
2Your throne was set up long, long ago. You yourself have always existed, with no beginning.
3The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.
3The floodwaters have risen, LORD. The rivers have lifted their voice and roared. The waters lift their pounding waves higher and higher.
4The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.
4The LORD is high above it all. He is stronger than the roar of deep waters, stronger than the huge, crashing waves of the sea.
5Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, for ever.
5The words you have spoken are completely sure. Holiness is what fits your house, LORD, and it will fit it forever.
"Becometh" here does not mean "turns into." In 1611 English it meant "suits" or "looks right on," the way we might say a color becomes someone.
