Psalms 6
What Happens in This Chapter
In this psalm, a song written to God, David is sick and very sad. He asks God to stop being angry and to make him well. He cries all night and asks God how long the hurting will last. At the end he says God has heard him, and he tells the people who hurt him to go away.

O LORD, rebuke me not in thine anger, neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.
1LORD, please do not scold me while you are angry. Please do not punish me while you are upset.
2Have mercy upon me, O LORD; for I am weak: O LORD, heal me; for my bones are vexed.
2Be kind to me, LORD. I am weak. Please make me well. Even my bones hurt.
"Vexed" in old English means hurting badly or in great pain.
3My soul is also sore vexed: but thou, O LORD, how long?
3Deep inside, I hurt too. LORD, how long will this last?
4Return, O LORD, deliver my soul: oh save me for thy mercies’ sake.
4Come back to me, LORD. Save my life. Rescue me because you love me so much.
5For in death there is no remembrance of thee: in the grave who shall give thee thanks?
5Dead people do not talk about you. No one in the grave can thank you.
6I am weary with my groaning; all the night make I my bed to swim; I water my couch with my tears.
6I am tired from crying so much. All night my bed gets wet. My tears soak the place where I lie down.
"Make my bed to swim" means his bed got soaked with tears, not that he was really swimming.
7Mine eye is consumed because of grief; it waxeth old because of all mine enemies.
7My eyes are worn out from being sad. They have grown weak because of all the people against me.
8Depart from me, all ye workers of iniquity; for the LORD hath heard the voice of my weeping.
8Go away from me, all you people who do wrong. The LORD has heard me crying.
9The LORD hath heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.
9The LORD has heard me beg for help. The LORD will listen to my prayer.
10Let all mine enemies be ashamed and sore vexed: let them return and be ashamed suddenly.
10All the people against me will feel ashamed and upset. They will turn away, ashamed all at once.
