Psalms 62
What Happens in This Chapter
In this psalm, David says he waits quietly for God and trusts God alone to keep him safe. He describes enemies who speak kindly but plan to bring him down, and he calls them weak, like a leaning wall. He tells everyone to pour out their hearts to God, and not to trust in money or in taking from others. He ends by saying that power belongs to God, and so does steady love.

Truly my soul waiteth upon God: from him cometh my salvation.
1I wait quietly for God alone. He is the one who saves me.
2He only is my rock and my salvation; he is my defence; I shall not be greatly moved.
2Only God is my rock and my rescuer. He is my strong safe place. I will not be shaken.
3How long will ye imagine mischief against a man? ye shall be slain all of you: as a bowing wall shall ye be, and as a tottering fence.
3How long will you all plan to hurt one man? You will all be brought down. You will be like a leaning wall, like a fence about to fall.
4They only consult to cast him down from his excellency: they delight in lies: they bless with their mouth, but they curse inwardly. Selah.
4All they want is to pull him down from his high place. They love to tell lies. Their mouths say kind words. But inside they wish him harm. Selah.
"Selah" is a word from the old song. Nobody today knows just what it meant. It may have marked a pause in the music.
5My soul, wait thou only upon God; for my expectation is from him.
5Wait quietly for God alone, my soul. My hope comes from him.
6He only is my rock and my salvation: he is my defence; I shall not be moved.
6Only God is my rock and my rescuer. He is my strong safe place. I will not be shaken.
7In God is my salvation and my glory: the rock of my strength, and my refuge, is in God.
7God saves me, and God gives me honor. He is my strong rock and my safe place.
8Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.

9Surely men of low degree are vanity, and men of high degree are a lie: to be laid in the balance, they are altogether lighter than vanity.
9People who seem small are only a puff of air. People who seem great are not what they seem. Put them on the scales, and they weigh less than a breath.
10Trust not in oppression, and become not vain in robbery: if riches increase, set not your heart upon them.
10Do not trust in pushing other people around. Do not hope in things you have stolen. If you get more money, do not love it.
11God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongeth unto God.
11God has said this once. I have heard it twice. All power belongs to God.
"Once... twice" was a way of saying something firmly. It means the speaker is very sure it is true.
12Also unto thee, O Lord, belongeth mercy: for thou renderest to every man according to his work.
12Steady love belongs to you too, Lord. You give back to each person for what he does.
