Psalms 29
What Happens in This Chapter
This psalm describes a great storm as the voice of the LORD. His voice sounds over the water, breaks tall trees, and shakes the desert. The psalm begins by calling heavenly beings to give God glory. It ends with God as King forever, giving his people strength and peace.

Give unto the LORD, O ye mighty, give unto the LORD glory and strength.
1Give to the LORD, all you heavenly beings. Give the LORD glory and strength.
2Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name; worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness.
2Give the LORD the glory his name deserves. Worship the LORD, who is holy and beautiful.
3The voice of the LORD is upon the waters: the God of glory thundereth: the LORD is upon many waters.
3The voice of the LORD sounds over the water. The God of glory thunders. The LORD's voice sounds over the deep sea.
4The voice of the LORD is powerful; the voice of the LORD is full of majesty.
4The voice of the LORD is strong. The voice of the LORD is grand, like a great king's.
5The voice of the LORD breaketh the cedars; yea, the LORD breaketh the cedars of Lebanon.
5The voice of the LORD breaks tall cedar trees. The LORD snaps the cedars of Lebanon.
6He maketh them also to skip like a calf; Lebanon and Sirion like a young unicorn.
6He makes the mountain of Lebanon jump like a baby cow. He makes Mount Sirion jump like a young wild ox.
The King James Version says "unicorn" here. The Hebrew word means a strong wild ox, not a horse with a horn.
7The voice of the LORD divideth the flames of fire.
7The voice of the LORD strikes with flashes of fire.
8The voice of the LORD shaketh the wilderness; the LORD shaketh the wilderness of Kadesh.
8The voice of the LORD shakes the empty desert. The LORD shakes the desert of Kadesh.
9The voice of the LORD maketh the hinds to calve, and discovereth the forests: and in his temple doth every one speak of his glory.
9The voice of the LORD twists the great oak trees. It strips the leaves off the forests. And in his temple, everyone shouts, "Glory!"
The King James word "hinds" means female deer, and "calve" means to give birth. The Hebrew can also mean the LORD's voice twists great trees, which is how most modern Bibles read it.
10The LORD sitteth upon the flood; yea, the LORD sitteth King for ever.
10The LORD sits as king above the great flood. The LORD sits as King forever.
11The LORD will give strength unto his people; the LORD will bless his people with peace.
