Psalms

Chapter 23

A song about God taking care of us. The man who wrote it looked after sheep when he was young. He says God looks after him the very same way.

Plain reading written for kids. Short sentences, everyday words, one idea at a time.

The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

1The LORD takes care of me, the way a shepherd takes care of sheep. I have everything I need.

The old words say "I shall not want." That means he will never go without.

2He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

2He lets me rest in soft green grass. He walks me to quiet water.

3He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

3He makes me strong again. He shows me the right way to go. That is what he is like.

4Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

4Even when I walk through the darkest place, I will not be afraid. You are with me. Your stick and your staff keep me safe.

5Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

5You make me a meal. You put it right in front of the people who are against me. You pour oil on my head to show I matter. My cup is so full it spills over.

6Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

6Good things and kindness will follow me every day of my life. I will live in the LORD's house forever.
