Psalms 123
What Happens in This Chapter
This short psalm is a prayer for help. The writer looks up to God, the way a servant watches a master's hand. He asks God to be kind, again and again. He says that proud people have been making fun of him and his people.

Unto thee lift I up mine eyes, O thou that dwellest in the heavens.
1I look up to you, God. You sit as king in heaven.
2Behold, as the eyes of servants look unto the hand of their masters, and as the eyes of a maiden unto the hand of her mistress; so our eyes wait upon the LORD our God, until that he have mercy upon us.
2Servants watch their master's hand to see what he wants. A young helper watches her mistress's hand the same way. That is how we watch the LORD our God. We keep watching until he is kind to us.
A mistress is a woman in charge of a household. The maiden is a servant girl who works for her.
3Have mercy upon us, O LORD, have mercy upon us: for we are exceedingly filled with contempt.
3Be kind to us, LORD. Please be kind to us. People have made fun of us for a long time.
4Our soul is exceedingly filled with the scorning of those that are at ease, and with the contempt of the proud.
4We have had all we can take. Comfortable people laugh at us. Proud people look down on us.
"Those that are at ease" means people whose lives are easy and safe.
