Numbers 21:33-35

Og Meets Israel at Edrei and Is Slain

33Then they turned and went up the road toward Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, came out with his whole army to fight them at Edrei.

And they turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he, and all his people, to the battle at Edrei.

Bashan was a land farther north with rich grass. People there raised big herds of cattle.

34The LORD said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him. I have handed him over to you, with his people and his land. Do to him what you did to Sihon, the Amorite king at Heshbon."

And the LORD said unto Moses, Fear him not: for I have delivered him into thy hand, and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

35So Israel beat Og, his sons, and his whole army. No one was left alive. And Israel took over his land.

So they smote him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him alive: and they possessed his land.

Deuteronomy 3:1-13

Moses Recounts Og's Defeat and Iron Bedstead

1Then we turned and took the road up to Bashan. Og, the king of Bashan, came out to fight us. He brought all his people to a town called Edrei.

Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan came out against us, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

In this chapter Moses is talking to the people. When he says "we," he means himself and Israel. Bashan was a land east of the Jordan River. It had good grass and strong cities.

2The LORD said to me, "Do not be afraid of him. I will hand him over to you. You will get his people and his land too. Do to him what you did to Sihon, the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon."

And the LORD said unto me, Fear him not: for I will deliver him, and all his people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst unto Sihon king of the Amorites, which dwelt at Heshbon.

The King James writes LORD in big letters. That stands for God's own special name. The Amorites were people already living in that land.

3So the LORD our God handed Og and all his people over to us. We fought them until not one of them was left.

So the LORD our God delivered into our hands Og also, the king of Bashan, and all his people: and we smote him until none was left to him remaining.

4At that time we took all his cities. There were sixty of them, and we took every one. This was the whole area of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

And we took all his cities at that time, there was not a city which we took not from them, threescore cities, all the region of Argob, the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

A city then was much smaller than a city today. Most were towns with a wall around them.

5All these cities had high walls, gates, and bars to lock them. There were also many small towns with no walls.

All these cities were fenced with high walls, gates, and bars; beside unwalled towns a great many.

The bars were heavy poles laid across the gates. They held the gates shut so no one could push in.

6We destroyed them all, just as we did to Sihon, the king of Heshbon. We killed the men, the women, and the children in every city.

And we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly destroying the men, women, and children, of every city.

The old words say they were "utterly destroyed." That means nothing at all was kept back or saved.

7But we kept all the animals and the goods from the cities for ourselves.

But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for a prey to ourselves.

"Spoil" means the things people took after winning a battle. Food, tools, cloth, and animals all counted.

8At that time we took land from those two Amorite kings. It was the land east of the Jordan River. It went from the Arnon valley all the way to Mount Hermon.

And we took at that time out of the hand of the two kings of the Amorites the land that was on this side Jordan, from the river of Arnon unto mount Hermon;

The Jordan is the main river of that land. Israel was still on the east side of it. Mount Hermon is a very tall mountain far to the north. Snow sits on its top.

9The people of Sidon call that mountain Sirion. The Amorites call it Shenir.

(Which Hermon the Sidonians call Sirion; and the Amorites call it Shenir;)

Sidon was a city by the sea. Different peoples used different names for the same mountain.

10We took all the towns on the flat high ground, all of Gilead, and all of Bashan. This reached as far as the towns of Salchah and Edrei, in Og's kingdom.

All the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salchah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.

Gilead was a hilly land east of the Jordan River.

11Og was the last one left of a very tall, strong people called the Rephaim. His bed was made of iron. It is still in Rabbath, a town of the Ammonites. That bed was nine cubits long and four cubits wide.

For only Og king of Bashan remained of the remnant of giants; behold, his bedstead was a bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbath of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a man.

A cubit was about as long as a grown-up's forearm. That is around eighteen inches. So this bed was about thirteen feet long. The Ammonites were another people who lived nearby.

12At that time we took this land for our own. I gave part of it to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. It started at Aroer, by the Arnon valley, and included half of the hills of Gilead and its towns.

And this land, which we possessed at that time, from Aroer, which is by the river Arnon, and half mount Gilead, and the cities thereof, gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites.

A tribe is one big family group. Israel had twelve tribes, named after Jacob's sons. Reuben and Gad were two of them.

13I gave the rest of Gilead and all of Bashan to half of the tribe of Manasseh. Bashan had been Og's kingdom. People used to call that whole area, Argob, the land of the giants.

And the rest of Gilead, and all Bashan, being the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half tribe of Manasseh; all the region of Argob, with all Bashan, which was called the land of giants.

Manasseh was one tribe, but it was split in two parts. Half took land here, and half took land later.

Deuteronomy 29:7-8

Sihon and Og Smitten, Their Land Divided

7"When you came to this place, two kings came out to fight us. They were Sihon, king of Heshbon, and Og, king of Bashan. We beat them."

And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them:

Sihon and Og were kings of lands Israel passed on the way. Heshbon and Bashan were their lands, east of the Jordan River.

8"We took their land. We gave it to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. We gave part of it to half the tribe of Manasseh. It became their family land to keep."

And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half tribe of Manasseh.

Israel was one big family made of twelve smaller families called tribes. Each tribe came from one of Jacob's sons. Reuben, Gad, and Manasseh got land on this side of the river. Family land was passed from parents to children and stayed in the family.

Joshua 2:9-11

Rahab Recalls What Israel Did to Og

9She said to them, "I know the LORD has given you this land. Everyone here is afraid of you. All the people in this land are shaking with fear.

And she said unto the men, I know that the LORD hath given you the land, and that your terror is fallen upon us, and that all the inhabitants of the land faint because of you.

LORD in big letters stands for God's own name. It was the special name God gave to Israel.

10"We heard how the LORD dried up the Red Sea for you. That was when you came out of Egypt. We heard what you did to Sihon and Og. They were two kings of the Amorites, east of the Jordan River. You destroyed them completely.

For we have heard how the LORD dried up the water of the Red sea for you, when ye came out of Egypt; and what ye did unto the two kings of the Amorites, that were on the other side Jordan, Sihon and Og, whom ye utterly destroyed.

Israel had been slaves in Egypt for many years. When they left, God opened a dry path through the Red Sea. Rahab had heard that story, even far away in Jericho.

11"When we heard this, our hearts melted with fear. No man here has any courage left. Your God, the LORD, is God in heaven above and on earth below.

And as soon as we had heard these things, our hearts did melt, neither did there remain any more courage in any man, because of you: for the LORD your God, he is God in heaven above, and in earth beneath.

Saying a heart melted is an old way of speaking. It means the person felt weak and very afraid.

Joshua 12:4-6

Og's Territory Among Kings Moses Conquered

4Another king was Og, the king of Bashan. He was one of the last of the giants, a very tall and strong people. He lived in the towns of Ashtaroth and Edrei.

And the coast of Og king of Bashan, which was of the remnant of the giants, that dwelt at Ashtaroth and at Edrei,

5Og ruled Mount Hermon, the town of Salcah, and all of Bashan. His land reached to the edge of the Geshurites and the Maachathites. He also ruled half of Gilead, up to the land of King Sihon of Heshbon.

And reigned in mount Hermon, and in Salcah, and in all Bashan, unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and half Gilead, the border of Sihon king of Heshbon.

6Moses, who served the LORD, and the people of Israel beat these two kings. Then Moses gave that land to the tribes of Reuben and Gad. He gave part of it to half the tribe of Manasseh too.

Them did Moses the servant of the LORD and the children of Israel smite: and Moses the servant of the LORD gave it for a possession unto the Reubenites, and the Gadites, and the half tribe of Manasseh.

Joshua 13:12

Og's Kingdom, Last of the Giants, Smitten

12It took in the whole kingdom of Og in Bashan. He had ruled in Ashtaroth and Edrei. He was one of the last of the Rephaim, a people who were very tall. Moses beat these kings and pushed their people out.

All the kingdom of Og in Bashan, which reigned in Ashtaroth and in Edrei, who remained of the remnant of the giants: for these did Moses smite, and cast them out.

The King James calls them "giants." Their real name was the Rephaim. Stories said they were much taller than other people.

Nehemiah 9:22

Levites Recall Israel Possessing Og's Land

22"You gave them kingdoms and peoples. You gave them land in every direction. They took the land of Sihon, the king of Heshbon. They took the land of Og, the king of Bashan."

Moreover thou gavest them kingdoms and nations, and didst divide them into corners: so they possessed the land of Sihon, and the land of the king of Heshbon, and the land of Og king of Bashan.

Sihon and Og were kings of lands near the Jordan River. Israel had to pass through their lands on the way home.

Psalms 135:10-12

God Slew Og and Gave His Land as Heritage

10He struck down many great nations. He killed strong kings.

Who smote great nations, and slew mighty kings;

11He struck Sihon, king of the Amorites. He struck Og, king of Bashan. He struck all the kingdoms of Canaan.

Sihon king of the Amorites, and Og king of Bashan, and all the kingdoms of Canaan:

Sihon and Og were kings whose lands Israel had to pass through. The Amorites were one of the peoples living there. Canaan was the land God promised to give his people.

12He gave their land away as a gift. He gave it to his people Israel to keep.

And gave their land for an heritage, an heritage unto Israel his people.

Back then, land was passed down from parents to children. It stayed in the family for a long, long time. That is the kind of gift God gave Israel.

Every passage here is the King James text. Nothing on this page retells the story; it only puts the pieces in order.
