Moses

44And Moses came and spake all the words of this song in the ears of the people, he, and Hoshea the son of Nun.

Moses came and said every word of this song out loud. All the people heard it. Hoshea son of Nun was there with him.

45And Moses made an end of speaking all these words to all Israel:

Moses finished saying all these words to all Israel.

46And he said unto them, Set your hearts unto all the words which I testify among you this day, which ye shall command your children to observe to do, all the words of this law.

He said, "Hold on to every word I have told you today. Tell your children to obey all the words of this law."

47For it is not a vain thing for you; because it is your life: and through this thing ye shall prolong your days in the land, whither ye go over Jordan to possess it.

"These words are not empty. They are your life. Because of them you will live a long time in the land. You are crossing the Jordan River to take that land."

48And the LORD spake unto Moses that selfsame day, saying,

That same day the LORD spoke to Moses.

49Get thee up into this mountain Abarim, unto mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, that is over against Jericho; and behold the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel for a possession:

"Go up into the Abarim mountains. Climb Mount Nebo, in the land of Moab, across from Jericho. Look out at the land of Canaan. I am giving it to Israel to keep."

50And die in the mount whither thou goest up, and be gathered unto thy people; as Aaron thy brother died in mount Hor, and was gathered unto his people:

"You will die on that mountain. You will join your family who died before you. Your brother Aaron died the same way on Mount Hor."

51Because ye trespassed against me among the children of Israel at the waters of MeribahKadesh, in the wilderness of Zin; because ye sanctified me not in the midst of the children of Israel.

"This is because you two were not faithful to me. It happened at the waters of Meribah-kadesh, in the desert of Zin. You did not honor me as holy in front of the people."

52Yet thou shalt see the land before thee; but thou shalt not go thither unto the land which I give the children of Israel.

"You will see the land from far away. But you will not go into it. I am giving that land to Israel."

1And Moses went up from the plains of Moab unto the mountain of Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, that is over against Jericho. And the LORD shewed him all the land of Gilead, unto Dan,

Moses walked up from the flat land of Moab to Mount Nebo. He stood on the top of it, called Pisgah, across from the city of Jericho. There God showed him the whole land, from Gilead all the way to Dan.

2And all Naphtali, and the land of Ephraim, and Manasseh, and all the land of Judah, unto the utmost sea,

God showed him all the land of Naphtali. He showed him the land of Ephraim and Manasseh. He showed him all the land of Judah, out to the sea in the west.

3And the south, and the plain of the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, unto Zoar.

God also showed him the dry southern land. He showed him the valley of Jericho, the city of palm trees, all the way to Zoar.

4And the LORD said unto him, This is the land which I sware unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, saying, I will give it unto thy seed: I have caused thee to see it with thine eyes, but thou shalt not go over thither.

God said to him, "This is the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. I told them I would give it to their children and grandchildren. I have let you see it with your own eyes. But you will not go across into it."

5So Moses the servant of the LORD died there in the land of Moab, according to the word of the LORD.

So Moses, who served God, died there in the land of Moab. It happened just as God had said it would.

6And he buried him in a valley in the land of Moab, over against Bethpeor: but no man knoweth of his sepulchre unto this day.

God buried him in a valley in Moab, across from a place called Beth-peor. Even today, no one knows where his grave is.

7And Moses was an hundred and twenty years old when he died: his eye was not dim, nor his natural force abated.

Moses was 120 years old when he died. His eyes still saw clearly. He was still strong.

8And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plains of Moab thirty days: so the days of weeping and mourning for Moses were ended.

The people of Israel cried for Moses for thirty days. They stayed in the flat land of Moab. Then the days of crying and sadness for Moses were over.

9And Joshua the son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom; for Moses had laid his hands upon him: and the children of Israel hearkened unto him, and did as the LORD commanded Moses.

Joshua, the son of Nun, was full of a wise spirit. This was because Moses had put his hands on him to make him the new leader. So the people of Israel listened to Joshua. They did what God had told Moses they should do.

10And there arose not a prophet since in Israel like unto Moses, whom the LORD knew face to face,

Since then, no prophet in Israel has been like Moses. A prophet is someone who tells people what God says. God knew Moses face to face, like a friend.

11In all the signs and the wonders, which the LORD sent him to do in the land of Egypt to Pharaoh, and to all his servants, and to all his land,

No other prophet did all the signs and wonders that Moses did. God sent him to do them in Egypt. He did them in front of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and all his helpers and his whole land.

12And in all that mighty hand, and in all the great terror which Moses shewed in the sight of all Israel.

No other prophet did such strong and powerful things. Moses did them where all Israel could watch.

1Now after the death of Moses the servant of the LORD it came to pass, that the LORD spake unto Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ minister, saying,

Moses, God's servant, had died. After that, the LORD spoke to Joshua, the son of Nun. Joshua had been Moses' helper.

2Moses my servant is dead; now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, thou, and all this people, unto the land which I do give to them, even to the children of Israel.

God said, "My servant Moses is dead. Now get up. Cross the Jordan River with all these people. Go into the land I am giving to Israel."

3Every place that the sole of your foot shall tread upon, that have I given unto you, as I said unto Moses.

"Every place you walk, I have given to you. That is what I promised Moses."

4From the wilderness and this Lebanon even unto the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites, and unto the great sea toward the going down of the sun, shall be your coast.

"Your land will reach from the dry desert to Lebanon. It will reach to the big river called the Euphrates. It will include all the land of the Hittites. It will reach west to the great sea."

5There shall not any man be able to stand before thee all the days of thy life: as I was with Moses, so I will be with thee: I will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.

"No one will be able to beat you as long as you live. I was with Moses, and I will be with you. I will never leave you. I will never turn away from you."

6Be strong and of a good courage: for unto this people shalt thou divide for an inheritance the land, which I sware unto their fathers to give them.

"Be strong and brave. You will divide this land among the people. It is the land I promised long ago to their grandfathers."

7Only be thou strong and very courageous, that thou mayest observe to do according to all the law, which Moses my servant commanded thee: turn not from it to the right hand or to the left, that thou mayest prosper whithersoever thou goest.

"Most of all, be strong and very brave. Carefully obey all the rules Moses gave you. Do not turn away from them, not even a little. Then things will go well wherever you go."

8This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.

"Keep saying the words of this book of rules. Think about them all day and all night. Then you will be careful to do what it says. Then you will do well and succeed."

9Have not I commanded thee? Be strong and of a good courage; be not afraid, neither be thou dismayed: for the LORD thy God is with thee whithersoever thou goest.

"I am the one telling you this. Be strong and brave. Do not be afraid. Do not lose hope. The LORD your God is with you wherever you go."

16They envied Moses also in the camp, and Aaron the saint of the LORD.

In the camp they were jealous of Moses. They were jealous of Aaron, the holy man of the LORD.

17The earth opened and swallowed up Dathan, and covered the company of Abiram.

The ground opened up and swallowed Dathan. It closed over Abiram and the people with him.

18And a fire was kindled in their company; the flame burned up the wicked.

A fire blazed through their group. The flames burned up those who had done wrong.

19They made a calf in Horeb, and worshipped the molten image.

At Mount Horeb they made a calf. They bowed down to a statue made of melted metal.

20Thus they changed their glory into the similitude of an ox that eateth grass.

They traded the glory of God for the image of an ox that eats grass.

21They forgat God their saviour, which had done great things in Egypt;

They forgot God, the one who saved them. He had done great things for them in Egypt.

22Wondrous works in the land of Ham, and terrible things by the Red sea.

He did wonders in the land of Ham. He did awesome, powerful things at the Red Sea.

23Therefore he said that he would destroy them, had not Moses his chosen stood before him in the breach, to turn away his wrath, lest he should destroy them.

So God said he would destroy them. But Moses, the man he had chosen, stood in the gap for them. He asked God to hold back his anger, and they were not destroyed.

24Yea, they despised the pleasant land, they believed not his word:

They looked down on the good land God promised. They did not believe what he told them.

25But murmured in their tents, and hearkened not unto the voice of the LORD.

They grumbled inside their tents. They would not listen to the voice of the LORD.

26Therefore he lifted up his hand against them, to overthrow them in the wilderness:

So he raised his hand and made a promise. They would fall in the desert.

27To overthrow their seed also among the nations, and to scatter them in the lands.

Their children after them would be spread among other nations. They would be scattered in far lands.

28They joined themselves also unto Baalpeor, and ate the sacrifices of the dead.

They joined themselves to Baal at Peor. They ate food offered to gods that are not alive.

29Thus they provoked him to anger with their inventions: and the plague brake in upon them.

The things they did made the LORD angry. A deadly sickness broke out among them.

30Then stood up Phinehas, and executed judgment: and so the plague was stayed.

Then Phinehas stood up and stepped in to stop it. The sickness was held back.

31And that was counted unto him for righteousness unto all generations for evermore.

God counted that as the right thing to do. He will count it so for all time to come.

32They angered him also at the waters of strife, so that it went ill with Moses for their sakes:

At the waters of Meribah they made God angry. Because of them, trouble came to Moses.

33Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips.

They turned against God's Spirit. Then Moses spoke words he should not have said.

1And after six days Jesus taketh Peter, James, and John his brother, and bringeth them up into an high mountain apart,

Six days later, Jesus took Peter, James, and John with him. John was James's brother. Jesus led them up a high mountain, away from other people.

2And was transfigured before them: and his face did shine as the sun, and his raiment was white as the light.

There Jesus changed right in front of them. His face shone like the sun. His clothes turned as white as light.

3And, behold, there appeared unto them Moses and Elias talking with him.

All at once, Moses and Elijah were there. They were talking with Jesus.

4Then answered Peter, and said unto Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if thou wilt, let us make here three tabernacles; one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias.

Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good that we are here. If you want, I will build three shelters. One for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah."

5While he yet spake, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them: and behold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased; hear ye him.

While Peter was still talking, a bright cloud covered them. A voice came out of the cloud. It said, "This is my Son, and I love him. He makes me very glad. Listen to him!"

6And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their face, and were sore afraid.

When his followers, called disciples, heard the voice, they fell with their faces to the ground. They were very afraid.

7And Jesus came and touched them, and said, Arise, and be not afraid.

Jesus came over and touched them. He said, "Get up. Do not be afraid."

8And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no man, save Jesus only.

They looked up. They saw no one there but Jesus.

20In which time Moses was born, and was exceeding fair, and nourished up in his father’s house three months:

Moses was born at that time. He was a lovely child in God's sight. For three months he was cared for in his father's house.

21And when he was cast out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him up, and nourished him for her own son.

Then he was put outside. Pharaoh's daughter took him and raised him as her own son.

22And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and in deeds.

Moses was taught everything the Egyptians knew. He was strong in what he said and in what he did.

23And when he was full forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brethren the children of Israel.

When Moses was forty years old, he decided to visit his own people, the people of Israel.

24And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him that was oppressed, and smote the Egyptian:

He saw an Egyptian hurting one of them. Moses stood up for the man. He paid the Egyptian back by killing him.

25For he supposed his brethren would have understood how that God by his hand would deliver them: but they understood not.

Moses thought his people would understand that God was using him to save them. But they did not understand.

26And the next day he shewed himself unto them as they strove, and would have set them at one again, saying, Sirs, ye are brethren; why do ye wrong one to another?

The next day he found two of them fighting. He tried to make peace between them. He said, "Men, you are brothers. Why are you hurting each other?"

27But he that did his neighbour wrong thrust him away, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us?

But the man who was hurting his neighbor pushed Moses away. He said, "Who made you our ruler and our judge?"

28Wilt thou kill me, as thou diddest the Egyptian yesterday?

"Do you want to kill me too, the way you killed the Egyptian yesterday?"

29Then fled Moses at this saying, and was a stranger in the land of Madian, where he begat two sons.

When Moses heard this, he ran away. He lived as a stranger in the land of Midian. There he had two sons.

30And when forty years were expired, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sina an angel of the Lord in a flame of fire in a bush.

Forty years later, an angel of the Lord came to Moses. The angel was in a burning bush in the desert near Mount Sinai.

31When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight: and as he drew near to behold it, the voice of the LORD came unto him,

Moses was amazed at what he saw. He came closer to look. Then the voice of the Lord spoke to him.

32Saying, I am the God of thy fathers, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. Then Moses trembled, and durst not behold.

The voice said, "I am the God of your fathers. I am the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob." Moses shook with fear. He did not dare to look.

33Then said the Lord to him, Put off thy shoes from thy feet: for the place where thou standest is holy ground.

Then the Lord said to him, "Take your shoes off your feet. The ground where you are standing is holy."

34I have seen, I have seen the affliction of my people which is in Egypt, and I have heard their groaning, and am come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send thee into Egypt.

"I have seen my people suffering in Egypt. I have heard them crying. I have come down to save them. Now come. I am sending you to Egypt."

35This Moses whom they refused, saying, Who made thee a ruler and a judge? the same did God send to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel which appeared to him in the bush.

This was the same Moses the people had pushed away. They had said, "Who made you our ruler and judge?" But God sent him to lead them and save them. God sent him through the angel who appeared in the bush.

36He brought them out, after that he had shewed wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

Moses led them out. He did wonders and signs in Egypt, at the Red Sea, and for forty years in the desert.

37This is that Moses, which said unto the children of Israel, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear.

This is the Moses who said to the people of Israel, "God will send you a prophet like me from your own people. A prophet is someone who tells people what God says."

38This is he, that was in the church in the wilderness with the angel which spake to him in the mount Sina, and with our fathers: who received the lively oracles to give unto us:

Moses was with the people gathered in the desert. He was with the angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai. He was with our fathers too. He received God's living words to pass on to us.

39To whom our fathers would not obey, but thrust him from them, and in their hearts turned back again into Egypt,

But our fathers would not obey him. They pushed him away. In their hearts they turned back toward Egypt.

40Saying unto Aaron, Make us gods to go before us: for as for this Moses, which brought us out of the land of Egypt, we wot not what is become of him.

They said to Aaron, "Make us gods to walk ahead of us. We do not know what happened to Moses, who led us out of Egypt."

41And they made a calf in those days, and offered sacrifice unto the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their own hands.

In those days they made a statue of a calf. They offered a gift to that false god. They were happy about what their own hands had made.

42Then God turned, and gave them up to worship the host of heaven; as it is written in the book of the prophets, O ye house of Israel, have ye offered to me slain beasts and sacrifices by the space of forty years in the wilderness?

So God turned away from them. He let them worship the sun, moon, and stars. The book of the prophets says this: "People of Israel, did you bring me animals and gifts for forty years in the desert?"

43Yea, ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan, figures which ye made to worship them: and I will carry you away beyond Babylon.

"You carried the tent of the god Molech. You carried the star of your god Rephan. You made these statues to worship them. So I will send you far away, past Babylon."

44Our fathers had the tabernacle of witness in the wilderness, as he had appointed, speaking unto Moses, that he should make it according to the fashion that he had seen.

Our fathers had the tent of the Testimony with them in the desert. God told Moses how to build it. Moses built it just like the pattern God showed him.

23By faith Moses, when he was born, was hid three months of his parents, because they saw he was a proper child; and they were not afraid of the king’s commandment.
