Moses

1And the LORD said unto Moses, Yet will I bring one plague more upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt; afterwards he will let you go hence: when he shall let you go, he shall surely thrust you out hence altogether.

The LORD said to Moses, "I will send one more terrible trouble on Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, and on his whole country. After that, he will let you go. He will even push you all out for good."

2Speak now in the ears of the people, and let every man borrow of his neighbour, and every woman of her neighbour, jewels of silver, and jewels of gold.

"Tell the people this now. Every man and every woman should ask their Egyptian neighbors for things made of silver and gold."

3And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians. Moreover the man Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.

The LORD made the Egyptians kind toward the people of Israel. And Moses himself was greatly respected in Egypt. Pharaoh's helpers and the people all thought highly of him.

4And Moses said, Thus saith the LORD, About midnight will I go out into the midst of Egypt:

Moses said, "Here is what the LORD says. About midnight I will go all through Egypt."

5And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the first born of Pharaoh that sitteth upon his throne, even unto the firstborn of the maidservant that is behind the mill; and all the firstborn of beasts.

"Every oldest son in Egypt will die. That means Pharaoh's own oldest son, who would be king one day. It also means the oldest son of the servant girl who grinds grain. Even the first young animals will die."

6And there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as there was none like it, nor shall be like it any more.

"Then there will be loud crying all over Egypt. There has never been crying like it before. There never will be again."

7But against any of the children of Israel shall not a dog move his tongue, against man or beast: that ye may know how that the LORD doth put a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

"But where the people of Israel live, not even a dog will bark. No person and no animal there will be harmed. Then you will know the LORD treats Egypt and Israel differently."

8And all these thy servants shall come down unto me, and bow down themselves unto me, saying, Get thee out, and all the people that follow thee: and after that I will go out. And he went out from Pharaoh in a great anger.

"All these helpers of yours will come to me and bow down low. They will say, 'Go away, you and all the people with you.' After that, I will leave." Then Moses walked out from Pharaoh, very angry.

9And the LORD said unto Moses, Pharaoh shall not hearken unto you; that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.

The LORD said to Moses, "Pharaoh will not listen to you. That is so I can do many more wonders in Egypt."

10And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh: and the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, so that he would not let the children of Israel go out of his land.

Moses and Aaron did all these wonders while Pharaoh watched. But the LORD made Pharaoh stubborn. So Pharaoh would not let the people of Israel leave his land.

21Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said unto them, Draw out and take you a lamb according to your families, and kill the passover.

Then Moses called all the leaders of Israel together. He said, "Go now and pick out a lamb for each family. Kill it for the Passover."

22And ye shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the bason, and strike the lintel and the two side posts with the blood that is in the bason; and none of you shall go out at the door of his house until the morning.

"Take a bunch of hyssop, which is a small leafy plant. Dip it in the bowl of blood. Brush the blood on the top and both sides of your door. No one may go out the door until morning."

23For the LORD will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when he seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you.

"The LORD will pass through the land to strike the Egyptians. He will see the blood on your door and pass over it. He will not let the destroyer come in and hurt you."

24And ye shall observe this thing for an ordinance to thee and to thy sons for ever.

"Keep this rule forever, you and your sons after you."

25And it shall come to pass, when ye be come to the land which the LORD will give you, according as he hath promised, that ye shall keep this service.

"The LORD promised to give you a land of your own. When you get there, keep doing this."

26And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service?

"Someday your children will ask you, 'What does this special meal mean?'"

27That ye shall say, It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped.

"Then say to them, 'It is the Passover gift to the LORD. He passed over our houses in Egypt. He struck the Egyptians, but he kept our homes safe.'" Then the people bowed down low and worshipped.

28And the children of Israel went away, and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron, so did they.

The people of Israel went and did just what the LORD told Moses and Aaron.

29And it came to pass, that at midnight the LORD smote all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne unto the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon; and all the firstborn of cattle.

At midnight the LORD struck down every firstborn son in Egypt. Even the son of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, died. So did the son of the prisoner down in the jail. Every firstborn farm animal died too.

30And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he, and all his servants, and all the Egyptians; and there was a great cry in Egypt; for there was not a house where there was not one dead.

Pharaoh got up in the night. So did his helpers and all the Egyptians. Loud crying filled the whole land. There was not one house without someone dead in it.

31And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said, Rise up, and get you forth from among my people, both ye and the children of Israel; and go, serve the LORD, as ye have said.

That night Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron. He said, "Get up and leave my people, you and all the people of Israel. Go and worship the LORD, just as you asked."

32Also take your flocks and your herds, as ye have said, and be gone; and bless me also.

"Take your sheep and your cows too, just as you said. Now go. And ask God to bless me also."

33And the Egyptians were urgent upon the people, that they might send them out of the land in haste; for they said, We be all dead men.

The Egyptians begged the people to hurry and leave the land. They said, "If you stay, we will all die."

34And the people took their dough before it was leavened, their kneadingtroughs being bound up in their clothes upon their shoulders.

The people took their bread dough before any yeast was mixed in. They wrapped their mixing bowls in clothes and carried them on their shoulders.

35And the children of Israel did according to the word of Moses; and they borrowed of the Egyptians jewels of silver, and jewels of gold, and raiment:

The people of Israel did what Moses had told them. They asked the Egyptians for silver, gold, and clothes.

36And the LORD gave the people favour in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they lent unto them such things as they required. And they spoiled the Egyptians.

The LORD made the Egyptians want to be kind to them. So the Egyptians gave them whatever they asked for. In this way the people of Israel took the riches of Egypt.

10And when Pharaoh drew nigh, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes, and, behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were sore afraid: and the children of Israel cried out unto the LORD.

Pharaoh came close. The people of Israel looked up and saw the Egyptians marching after them. They were very scared. They cried out to the LORD for help.

11And they said unto Moses, Because there were no graves in Egypt, hast thou taken us away to die in the wilderness? wherefore hast thou dealt thus with us, to carry us forth out of Egypt?

They said to Moses, "Were there no graves in Egypt? Is that why you brought us out here to die? Why did you do this to us?"

12Is not this the word that we did tell thee in Egypt, saying, Let us alone, that we may serve the Egyptians? For it had been better for us to serve the Egyptians, than that we should die in the wilderness.

"We told you this in Egypt. We said, 'Leave us alone. Let us work for the Egyptians.' It would be better to work for them than to die out here."

13And Moses said unto the people, Fear ye not, stand still, and see the salvation of the LORD, which he will shew to you to day: for the Egyptians whom ye have seen to day, ye shall see them again no more for ever.

Moses said to the people, "Don't be afraid. Stand still and watch. Today you will see the LORD save you. You will never see these Egyptians again."

14The LORD shall fight for you, and ye shall hold your peace.

"The LORD will fight for you. You only need to stay still and quiet."

15And the LORD said unto Moses, Wherefore criest thou unto me? speak unto the children of Israel, that they go forward:

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Why are you crying out to me? Tell the people of Israel to move forward."

16But lift thou up thy rod, and stretch out thine hand over the sea, and divide it: and the children of Israel shall go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

"Hold up your walking stick. Reach your hand out over the sea. The water will split apart. Then the people of Israel can walk through on dry ground."

17And I, behold, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall follow them: and I will get me honour upon Pharaoh, and upon all his host, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

"I will make the Egyptians stubborn, and they will follow you in. Then everyone will see how strong I am. Pharaoh, his army, his chariots, and his riders will lose."

18And the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gotten me honour upon Pharaoh, upon his chariots, and upon his horsemen.

"When that happens, the Egyptians will learn that I am the LORD."

19And the angel of God, which went before the camp of Israel, removed and went behind them; and the pillar of the cloud went from before their face, and stood behind them:

God's angel, his messenger, had been leading Israel's camp. Now the angel moved and went behind them. The tall cloud moved from the front and stood behind them too.

20And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel; and it was a cloud and darkness to them, but it gave light by night to these: so that the one came not near the other all the night.

The cloud came between the Egyptian camp and the Israelite camp. It made darkness on one side. It gave light all night on the other side. So neither camp came near the other all night.

21And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to go back by a strong east wind all that night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

Moses reached his hand out over the sea. The LORD sent a strong wind from the east all night long. The wind pushed the sea back and made the ground dry. The water split into two parts.

22And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground: and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

The people of Israel walked into the sea on dry ground. The water stood up like a wall on their right and on their left.

23And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them to the midst of the sea, even all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

The Egyptians chased after them into the middle of the sea. All of Pharaoh's horses, chariots, and riders went in.

24And it came to pass, that in the morning watch the LORD looked unto the host of the Egyptians through the pillar of fire and of the cloud, and troubled the host of the Egyptians,

In the dark hours just before sunrise, the LORD looked down at the Egyptian army. He looked from the tall pillar of fire and cloud. He filled the Egyptians with fear and confusion.

25And took off their chariot wheels, that they drave them heavily: so that the Egyptians said, Let us flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fighteth for them against the Egyptians.

He made their chariot wheels come loose, so the chariots were hard to drive. The Egyptians said, "Let's get away from Israel! The LORD is fighting for them against us!"

26And the LORD said unto Moses, Stretch out thine hand over the sea, that the waters may come again upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots, and upon their horsemen.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Reach your hand out over the sea. The water will come back over the Egyptians, their chariots, and their riders."

27And Moses stretched forth his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to his strength when the morning appeared; and the Egyptians fled against it; and the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

Moses reached his hand out over the sea. At sunrise the sea went back to its normal place. The Egyptians tried to run away from it. But the LORD swept them into the middle of the sea.

28And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the host of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them; there remained not so much as one of them.

The water came back and covered the chariots and the riders. It covered Pharaoh's whole army that had followed Israel into the sea. Not one of them lived.

29But the children of Israel walked upon dry land in the midst of the sea; and the waters were a wall unto them on their right hand, and on their left.

But the people of Israel had walked on dry ground through the middle of the sea. The water had stood like a wall on their right and on their left.

30Thus the LORD saved Israel that day out of the hand of the Egyptians; and Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the sea shore.

That day the LORD saved Israel from the Egyptians. Israel saw the dead Egyptians lying on the shore.

31And Israel saw that great work which the LORD did upon the Egyptians: and the people feared the LORD, and believed the LORD, and his servant Moses.

Israel saw the great thing the LORD did to the Egyptians. The people were filled with wonder and respect for the LORD. They trusted the LORD, and they trusted Moses, his servant.

1Then sang Moses and the children of Israel this song unto the LORD, and spake, saying, I will sing unto the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously: the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Then Moses and the people of Israel sang this song to God. "I will sing to God. He has won a great victory. He threw the horses and their riders into the sea.

2The LORD is my strength and song, and he is become my salvation: he is my God, and I will prepare him an habitation; my father’s God, and I will exalt him.

God makes me strong. He is my song. He saved me. He is my God, and I will build him a home. He is my father's God, and I will say he is great.

3The LORD is a man of war: the LORD is his name.

God is a fighter in battle. The LORD is his name.

4Pharaoh’s chariots and his host hath he cast into the sea: his chosen captains also are drowned in the Red sea.

He threw the war carts and the army of Pharaoh into the sea. Pharaoh was the king of Egypt. His best leaders drowned in the Red Sea.

5The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.

Deep water covered them. They sank down like a stone.

6Thy right hand, O LORD, is become glorious in power: thy right hand, O LORD, hath dashed in pieces the enemy.

Your right hand, God, is strong and full of glory. Your right hand broke the enemy to pieces.

7And in the greatness of thine excellency thou hast overthrown them that rose up against thee: thou sentest forth thy wrath, which consumed them as stubble.

You are so great that you knocked down those who fought you. Your hot anger burned them up like dry grass.

8And with the blast of thy nostrils the waters were gathered together, the floods stood upright as an heap, and the depths were congealed in the heart of the sea.

You breathed out hard, and the water piled up. The waves stood up like a wall. The deep water grew firm in the middle of the sea.

9The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil; my lust shall be satisfied upon them; I will draw my sword, my hand shall destroy them.

The enemy said, "I will chase them. I will catch them. I will take their things and share them out. I will have all I want from them. I will pull out my sword and destroy them."

10Thou didst blow with thy wind, the sea covered them: they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

But you blew with your wind, and the sea covered them. They sank like heavy metal in the deep water.

11Who is like unto thee, O LORD, among the gods? who is like thee, glorious in holiness, fearful in praises, doing wonders?

Who is like you, God, among all the gods? No one is holy the way you are. People praise you with wonder. You do amazing things.

12Thou stretchedst out thy right hand, the earth swallowed them.

You reached out your right hand. The earth swallowed them up.

13Thou in thy mercy hast led forth the people which thou hast redeemed: thou hast guided them in thy strength unto thy holy habitation.

You are kind. You led out the people you saved. You are strong, and you guided them to your holy home.

14The people shall hear, and be afraid: sorrow shall take hold on the inhabitants of Palestina.

Other nations will hear about this and be afraid. The people of Philistia will ache with fear.

15Then the dukes of Edom shall be amazed; the mighty men of Moab, trembling shall take hold upon them; all the inhabitants of Canaan shall melt away.

The leaders of Edom will be shocked. The strong men of Moab will shake with fear. Everyone living in Canaan will lose all courage.

16Fear and dread shall fall upon them; by the greatness of thine arm they shall be as still as a stone; till thy people pass over, O LORD, till the people pass over, which thou hast purchased.

Fear will fall on them. Your arm is so strong that they will stand still like stone. They will wait while your people walk past, God. These are the people you bought for yourself.

17Thou shalt bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of thine inheritance, in the place, O LORD, which thou hast made for thee to dwell in, in the Sanctuary, O LORD, which thy hands have established.

You will bring them in and plant them on your own mountain. That is the place you made for yourself to live in, God. It is your holy house, built by your own hands.

18The LORD shall reign for ever and ever.

The LORD will be king forever and ever."

19For the horse of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and the LORD brought again the waters of the sea upon them; but the children of Israel went on dry land in the midst of the sea.

Pharaoh's horses, war carts, and riders went into the sea. God brought the water back over them. But the people of Israel walked through the sea on dry ground.

20And Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand; and all the women went out after her with timbrels and with dances.

Miriam was a prophetess, a woman who told people what God said. She was Aaron's sister. She picked up a timbrel, a small drum. All the women followed her with drums and dancing.

21And Miriam answered them, Sing ye to the LORD, for he hath triumphed gloriously; the horse and his rider hath he thrown into the sea.

Miriam sang back to them, "Sing to God! He has won a great victory. He threw the horses and their riders into the sea."

22So Moses brought Israel from the Red sea, and they went out into the wilderness of Shur; and they went three days in the wilderness, and found no water.

Moses led Israel away from the Red Sea into the empty land of Shur. They walked three days there and found no water.

23And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter: therefore the name of it was called Marah.

They came to a place called Marah. They could not drink the water there, because it tasted bitter. That is why the place was named Marah.

24And the people murmured against Moses, saying, What shall we drink?

The people complained to Moses. They said, "What are we going to drink?"

25And he cried unto the LORD; and the LORD shewed him a tree, which when he had cast into the waters, the waters were made sweet: there he made for them a statute and an ordinance, and there he proved them,

Moses called out to God for help. God showed him a piece of wood. Moses threw it into the water, and the water turned sweet. There God gave them rules to follow. There he tested them.

26And said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his sight, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of these diseases upon thee, which I have brought upon the Egyptians: for I am the LORD that healeth thee.

God said, "Listen carefully to my voice. Do what is right in my eyes. Pay attention to my commands and keep all my rules. Then I will not put on you the sicknesses I sent on the Egyptians. I am the LORD who makes you well."

27And they came to Elim, where were twelve wells of water, and threescore and ten palm trees: and they encamped there by the waters.

Then they came to Elim. There were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees. They set up camp there beside the water.

1And they took their journey from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came unto the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departing out of the land of Egypt.

The people of Israel left a place called Elim. They all came to a dry, empty land called the Desert of Sin. It lies between Elim and Sinai. This was on the fifteenth day of the second month after they left Egypt.

2And the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness:

There in the desert, all the people complained about Moses and Aaron.

3And the children of Israel said unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the LORD in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full; for ye have brought us forth into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

They said, "We wish God had let us die in Egypt. There we sat by pots full of meat. We ate all the bread we wanted. But you brought us out to this empty land. Now we will all die of hunger."

4Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.

Then God said to Moses, "Look, I will rain down bread from the sky for you. Each day the people must go out and gather enough for that one day. This will test them. I will see if they do what I say."

5And it shall come to pass, that on the sixth day they shall prepare that which they bring in; and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.

"On the sixth day they will bring in food and get it ready. It will be twice as much as they gather on other days."

6And Moses and Aaron said unto all the children of Israel, At even, then ye shall know that the LORD hath brought you out from the land of Egypt:

So Moses and Aaron said to all the people, "Tonight you will know that God brought you out of Egypt."

7And in the morning, then ye shall see the glory of the LORD; for that he heareth your murmurings against the LORD: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

"In the morning you will see God's glory, a bright light that shows he is here. He has heard you complain about him. We are only men. Why complain to us?"

8And Moses said, This shall be, when the LORD shall give you in the evening flesh to eat, and in the morning bread to the full; for that the LORD heareth your murmurings which ye murmur against him: and what are we? your murmurings are not against us, but against the LORD.

Moses said more: "Tonight God will give you meat to eat. In the morning he will give you all the bread you want. He has heard you complain about him. Who are we? Your complaining is not against us. It is against God."

9And Moses spake unto Aaron, Say unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, Come near before the LORD: for he hath heard your murmurings.

Then Moses told Aaron, "Say this to all the people: 'Come close to God. He has heard your complaining.'"

10And it came to pass, as Aaron spake unto the whole congregation of the children of Israel, that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the LORD appeared in the cloud.

While Aaron was speaking to the people, they looked out toward the desert. And there was God's glory, shining in a cloud.

11And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,

Then God spoke to Moses. He said,

12I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel: speak unto them, saying, At even ye shall eat flesh, and in the morning ye shall be filled with bread; and ye shall know that I am the LORD your God.

"I have heard the people of Israel complain. Tell them, 'This evening you will eat meat. In the morning you will have all the bread you want. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.'"

13And it came to pass, that at even the quails came up, and covered the camp: and in the morning the dew lay round about the host.

That evening, birds called quail came and covered the camp. In the morning, dew lay on the ground all around the camp.

14And when the dew that lay was gone up, behold, upon the face of the wilderness there lay a small round thing, as small as the hoar frost on the ground.

When the dew dried up, thin flakes were left on the desert ground. They were as fine as frost.

15And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.

When the people saw it, they asked each other, "What is it?" They did not know what it was. Moses said to them, "This is the bread God has given you to eat."

16This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, Gather of it every man according to his eating, an omer for every man, according to the number of your persons; take ye every man for them which are in his tents.

"This is what God has told you to do. Each person must gather as much as he needs to eat. Take one omer for each person in your tent."

17And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less.

The people of Israel did this. Some gathered more, and some gathered less.

18And when they did mete it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack; they gathered every man according to his eating.

Then they measured it with an omer. The one who gathered a lot had none left over. The one who gathered a little still had enough. Each person had just what he needed.

19And Moses said, Let no man leave of it till the morning.

Then Moses said, "No one may keep any of it until morning."

20Notwithstanding they hearkened not unto Moses; but some of them left of it until the morning, and it bred worms, and stank: and Moses was wroth with them.

But some people did not listen to Moses. They kept part of it until morning. It filled with worms and smelled bad. Moses was angry with them.

21And they gathered it every morning, every man according to his eating: and when the sun waxed hot, it melted.

Every morning each person gathered what he needed. When the sun grew hot, the food melted away.

1And all the congregation of the children of Israel journeyed from the wilderness of Sin, after their journeys, according to the commandment of the LORD, and pitched in Rephidim: and there was no water for the people to drink.

All the people of Israel left the desert of Sin. They moved from place to place, just as the LORD told them. They camped at a place called Rephidim. But there was no water there for the people to drink.

2Wherefore the people did chide with Moses, and said, Give us water that we may drink. And Moses said unto them, Why chide ye with me? wherefore do ye tempt the LORD?

So the people argued with Moses. They said, "Give us water to drink." Moses said to them, "Why are you arguing with me? Why are you testing the LORD?"

3And the people thirsted there for water; and the people murmured against Moses, and said, Wherefore is this that thou hast brought us up out of Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?

The people were very thirsty there. They complained about Moses. They said, "Why did you bring us out of Egypt? Was it to kill us with thirst? Will our children and our animals die too?"

4And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying, What shall I do unto this people? they be almost ready to stone me.

Moses called out to the LORD. He said, "What should I do with these people? They are almost ready to throw stones at me."

5And the LORD said unto Moses, Go on before the people, and take with thee of the elders of Israel; and thy rod, wherewith thou smotest the river, take in thine hand, and go.

The LORD said to Moses, "Walk on ahead of the people. Take some of the leaders of Israel with you. Carry the walking stick you used to hit the river in Egypt. Now go."

6Behold, I will stand before thee there upon the rock in Horeb; and thou shalt smite the rock, and there shall come water out of it, that the people may drink. And Moses did so in the sight of the elders of Israel.

"I will stand in front of you there, on the rock at Horeb. Hit the rock, and water will come out of it. Then the people can drink." Moses did this while the leaders of Israel watched.

7And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?

Moses named that place Massah and Meribah. He named it that because the people argued there. They also tested the LORD. They asked, "Is the LORD here with us or not?"

8Then came Amalek, and fought with Israel in Rephidim.

Then a people called the Amalekites came. They fought against Israel at Rephidim.

9And Moses said unto Joshua, Choose us out men, and go out, fight with Amalek: to morrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the rod of God in mine hand.

Moses said to Joshua, "Pick out some men for us. Go and fight the Amalekites. Tomorrow I will stand on top of the hill. I will hold the walking stick God gave me."

10So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek: and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.

Joshua did what Moses told him. He fought against the Amalekites. Moses, Aaron, and Hur climbed to the top of the hill.

11And it came to pass, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed: and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.

When Moses held his hands up, Israel was winning. When he let his hands down, the Amalekites were winning.

12But Moses’ hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat thereon; and Aaron and Hur stayed up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side; and his hands were steady until the going down of the sun.

But Moses' arms grew tired and heavy. So they took a stone and put it under him. He sat down on it. Aaron and Hur held his hands up, one on each side. His hands stayed steady until the sun went down.

13And Joshua discomfited Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.

So Joshua beat the Amalekites and their army. His men fought them with swords.

14And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Then the LORD said to Moses, "Write this in a book so it will be remembered. Read it out loud to Joshua. I will completely wipe out the memory of Amalek from the earth."

15And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovahnissi:

Moses built an altar there. An altar is a stone table for giving gifts to God. He named the altar Jehovah-nissi.

16For he said, Because the LORD hath sworn that the LORD will have war with Amalek from generation to generation.

He said, "The LORD has made a promise. He will fight against Amalek for a long, long time. He will fight them for many, many years."
