Micah

1And there was a man of mount Ephraim, whose name was Micah.

There was a man named Micah. He lived in the hill country of Ephraim.

2And he said unto his mother, The eleven hundred shekels of silver that were taken from thee, about which thou cursedst, and spakest of also in mine ears, behold, the silver is with me; I took it. And his mother said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my son.

Micah said to his mother, "Someone took eleven hundred pieces of silver from you. I heard you say bad words against the thief. I have the silver. I took it." His mother said, "May the LORD bless you, my son."

3And when he had restored the eleven hundred shekels of silver to his mother, his mother said, I had wholly dedicated the silver unto the LORD from my hand for my son, to make a graven image and a molten image: now therefore I will restore it unto thee.

Micah gave the eleven hundred pieces of silver back to his mother. She said, "I am giving this silver to the LORD. It is a gift for my son. It will be used to make two statues to be worshiped. So now I am giving it back to you."

4Yet he restored the money unto his mother; and his mother took two hundred shekels of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and they were in the house of Micah.

Micah gave the silver back to his mother. She took two hundred pieces of it. She gave them to a man who works with silver. He made two statues to be worshiped. They were kept in Micah's house.

5And the man Micah had an house of gods, and made an ephod, and teraphim, and consecrated one of his sons, who became his priest.

Micah had a small place at home for worship. He made a special vest called an ephod. He also made little idols for the house. He picked one of his sons to be his priest, the man who leads worship.

6In those days there was no king in Israel, but every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

In those days Israel had no king. Each person did whatever seemed right to him.

7And there was a young man out of Bethlehemjudah of the family of Judah, who was a Levite, and he sojourned there.

There was a young man from Bethlehem in Judah. He was a Levite, from the family group that helped with worship. He had been staying among the people of Judah.

8And the man departed out of the city from Bethlehemjudah to sojourn where he could find a place: and he came to mount Ephraim to the house of Micah, as he journeyed.

He left the town of Bethlehem in Judah. He wanted to find some other place to live. On his way he came to Micah's house in the hill country of Ephraim.

9And Micah said unto him, Whence comest thou? And he said unto him, I am a Levite of Bethlehemjudah, and I go to sojourn where I may find a place.

Micah asked him, "Where do you come from?" He said, "I am a Levite from Bethlehem in Judah. I am looking for a place to live."

10And Micah said unto him, Dwell with me, and be unto me a father and a priest, and I will give thee ten shekels of silver by the year, and a suit of apparel, and thy victuals. So the Levite went in.

Micah said, "Stay with me. Be like a father to me, and be my priest. Each year I will give you ten pieces of silver. I will also give you clothes and food." So the Levite went inside.

11And the Levite was content to dwell with the man; and the young man was unto him as one of his sons.

The Levite was glad to stay with Micah. The young man became like one of Micah's own sons.

12And Micah consecrated the Levite; and the young man became his priest, and was in the house of Micah.

Micah made the Levite his priest. The young man lived in Micah's house.

13Then said Micah, Now know I that the LORD will do me good, seeing I have a Levite to my priest.

Then Micah said, "Now I know the LORD will be good to me. I have a Levite as my priest."

1In those days there was no king in Israel: and in those days the tribe of the Danites sought them an inheritance to dwell in; for unto that day all their inheritance had not fallen unto them among the tribes of Israel.

Back then Israel had no king. The tribe of Dan was looking for land to live in. Up to that time they had not been given their own share among the tribes.

2And the children of Dan sent of their family five men from their coasts, men of valour, from Zorah, and from Eshtaol, to spy out the land, and to search it; and they said unto them, Go, search the land: who when they came to mount Ephraim, to the house of Micah, they lodged there.

The people of Dan chose five brave men from the towns of Zorah and Eshtaol. "Go and look over the land," they told them. The men came to the hill country of Ephraim. They stopped at Micah's house and stayed the night.

3When they were by the house of Micah, they knew the voice of the young man the Levite: and they turned in thither, and said unto him, Who brought thee hither? and what makest thou in this place? and what hast thou here?

Near the house they heard the young Levite's voice and knew who it was. A Levite came from the family group that helped with worship. They went over and asked, "Who brought you here? What are you doing? Why are you here?"

4And he said unto them, Thus and thus dealeth Micah with me, and hath hired me, and I am his priest.

He said, "Micah did this and that for me. He pays me to be his priest, the man who leads worship for him."

5And they said unto him, Ask counsel, we pray thee, of God, that we may know whether our way which we go shall be prosperous.

They said to him, "Please ask God something for us. We want to know if our trip will go well."

6And the priest said unto them, Go in peace: before the LORD is your way wherein ye go.

The priest said, "Go in peace. The LORD is watching over the trip you are taking."

13And they passed thence unto mount Ephraim, and came unto the house of Micah.

From there they went on to the hill country of Ephraim. They came to Micah's house.

14Then answered the five men that went to spy out the country of Laish, and said unto their brethren, Do ye know that there is in these houses an ephod, and teraphim, and a graven image, and a molten image? now therefore consider what ye have to do.

The five men who had gone to see Laish spoke to their brothers. "Did you know one of these houses has an ephod and small house gods? It also has a carved idol and one made of melted metal. Now think about what you should do."

15And they turned thitherward, and came to the house of the young man the Levite, even unto the house of Micah, and saluted him.

So they turned in at the house of the young Levite, which was Micah's house. They greeted him.

16And the six hundred men appointed with their weapons of war, which were of the children of Dan, stood by the entering of the gate.

The six hundred men of Dan stood at the gate. They were holding their weapons for war.

17And the five men that went to spy out the land went up, and came in thither, and took the graven image, and the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image: and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the six hundred men that were appointed with weapons of war.

The five spies went inside and took the carved idol, the ephod, the small house gods, and the metal idol. The priest was standing at the gate with the six hundred armed men.

18And these went into Micah’s house, and fetched the carved image, the ephod, and the teraphim, and the molten image. Then said the priest unto them, What do ye?

The men went into Micah's house and carried all those things out. Then the priest said to them, "What are you doing?"

19And they said unto him, Hold thy peace, lay thine hand upon thy mouth, and go with us, and be to us a father and a priest: is it better for thee to be a priest unto the house of one man, or that thou be a priest unto a tribe and a family in Israel?

They said, "Be quiet. Put your hand over your mouth. Come with us and be our priest, like a father to us. Is it better to be priest for one man's house, or for a whole tribe in Israel?"

20And the priest’s heart was glad, and he took the ephod, and the teraphim, and the graven image, and went in the midst of the people.

This made the priest glad. He picked up the ephod, the house gods, and the carved idol. Then he walked along with the people.

21So they turned and departed, and put the little ones and the cattle and the carriage before them.

They turned and went on their way. They put their little children, their animals, and their goods in front of them.

22And when they were a good way from the house of Micah, the men that were in the houses near to Micah’s house were gathered together, and overtook the children of Dan.

They had gone a good way from Micah's house. Then the men who lived near Micah came together. They chased the men of Dan and caught up with them.

23And they cried unto the children of Dan. And they turned their faces, and said unto Micah, What aileth thee, that thou comest with such a company?

They shouted after them. The men of Dan turned around and said to Micah, "What is wrong? Why did you come after us with all these men?"

24And he said, Ye have taken away my gods which I made, and the priest, and ye are gone away: and what have I more? and what is this that ye say unto me, What aileth thee?

He said, "You took the gods I made. You took my priest, and then you left. What do I have left? How can you ask me what is wrong?"

25And the children of Dan said unto him, Let not thy voice be heard among us, lest angry fellows run upon thee, and thou lose thy life, with the lives of thy household.

The men of Dan said, "Do not raise your voice at us. Angry men might attack you. Then you and your family would lose your lives."

26And the children of Dan went their way: and when Micah saw that they were too strong for him, he turned and went back unto his house.

So the men of Dan went on their way. Micah saw they were too strong for him. He turned and went back home.

27And they took the things which Micah had made, and the priest which he had, and came unto Laish, unto a people that were at quiet and secure: and they smote them with the edge of the sword, and burnt the city with fire.

They took the things Micah had made and took his priest too. Then they came to Laish, where the people lived quietly and felt safe. They killed the people with their swords. They burned the city down.

28And there was no deliverer, because it was far from Zidon, and they had no business with any man; and it was in the valley that lieth by Bethrehob. And they built a city, and dwelt therein.

No one came to save the town. It was far from Sidon and had no friends to help. It sat in a valley near Beth-rehob. The men of Dan built the city again and lived there.

29And they called the name of the city Dan, after the name of Dan their father, who was born unto Israel: howbeit the name of the city was Laish at the first.

They named the city Dan, after Dan, one of the sons of Israel. Before that, the city was called Laish.

30And the children of Dan set up the graven image: and Jonathan, the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh, he and his sons were priests to the tribe of Dan until the day of the captivity of the land.

The men of Dan set up the carved idol there. Jonathan was the son of Gershom, the son of Manasseh. He and his sons were priests for the tribe of Dan. They kept doing this until the people were taken away from the land.

31And they set them up Micah’s graven image, which he made, all the time that the house of God was in Shiloh.

They kept Micah's carved idol standing there. It stayed the whole time that God's house was at Shiloh.
