Joseph of Arimathaea

57When the even was come, there came a rich man of Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus’ disciple:

When evening came, a rich man from Arimathea named Joseph arrived. He was a follower of Jesus.

58He went to Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded the body to be delivered.

He went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. Pilate gave the order for the body to be handed over.

59And when Joseph had taken the body, he wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

Joseph took the body and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth.

60And laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the sepulchre, and departed.

He laid it in his own new tomb, which he had cut out of rock. He rolled a large stone across the doorway and went away.

61And there was Mary Magdalene, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

42And now when the even was come, because it was the preparation, that is, the day before the sabbath,

It was now evening. That day was Preparation Day, the day before the Sabbath.

43Joseph of Arimathaea, an honourable counsellor, which also waited for the kingdom of God, came, and went in boldly unto Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus.

Joseph from Arimathea was a respected member of the council, and he was waiting for God's kingdom. He went bravely to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

44And Pilate marvelled if he were already dead: and calling unto him the centurion, he asked him whether he had been any while dead.

Pilate was surprised that Jesus was already dead. He called the Roman officer and asked whether Jesus had been dead for long.

45And when he knew it of the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph.

When the officer told him it was true, Pilate let Joseph take the body.

46And he bought fine linen, and took him down, and wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre.

Joseph bought a fine linen cloth. He took the body down, wrapped it in the cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut out of rock. Then he rolled a stone across the entrance.

47And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses beheld where he was laid.

Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses saw where the body was laid.

50And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

There was a man named Joseph, a member of the council. He was a good and fair man.

51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

He had not agreed with what the others decided and did. He came from Arimathea, a town in Judea, and he was waiting for God's kingdom.

52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

He took the body down, wrapped it in linen cloth, and laid it in a tomb cut out of rock. No one had ever been laid there before.

54And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed along. They saw the tomb and how His body was placed in it.

56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Then they went home and got spices and sweet-smelling oils ready. And they rested on the Sabbath, as the commandment said.

38And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

Later, Joseph of Arimathaea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Joseph followed Jesus, but secretly, because he was afraid of the Jewish leaders. Pilate said he could, so Joseph came and took the body away.

39And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

Nicodemus came too, the man who had first come to Jesus at night. He brought about seventy-five pounds of myrrh and aloes mixed together.

40Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

They took the body of Jesus and wrapped it in strips of linen cloth with the spices. This was the Jewish custom for burying the dead.

41Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

In the place where Jesus was killed there was a garden. In the garden was a new tomb where no one had ever been laid.

42There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews’ preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.

Because it was the Jewish day of getting ready, and the tomb was close by, they laid Jesus there.
