Jonas a Sign to the Ninevites
29And when the people were gathered thick together, he began to say, This is an evil generation: they seek a sign; and there shall no sign be given it, but the sign of Jonas the prophet.
More and more people crowded around him. Jesus said, "The people of this time do wrong. They keep asking for a sign. But the only sign they get is the sign of Jonah the prophet. A prophet was someone who told people what God said.
30For as Jonas was a sign unto the Ninevites, so shall also the Son of man be to this generation.
Jonah was a sign to the people of the city of Nineveh. In the same way, the Son of Man will be a sign to people now. Son of Man was the name Jesus used for himself.
31The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgment with the men of this generation, and condemn them: for she came from the utmost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here.
The queen from the south will stand up on the day God judges everyone. She will stand with the people of this time and show they are guilty. She traveled from the far ends of the earth to hear Solomon's wise words. And someone greater than Solomon is here.
32The men of Nineve shall rise up in the judgment with this generation, and shall condemn it: for they repented at the preaching of Jonas; and, behold, a greater than Jonas is here.
The men of Nineveh will stand up on the day God judges everyone. They will stand with the people of this time and show they are guilty. Those men turned away from their sins when Jonah preached. And someone greater than Jonah is here.
