John Mark

12And when he had considered the thing, he came to the house of Mary the mother of John, whose surname was Mark; where many were gathered together praying.

Once he realized this, he went to the house of Mary, the mother of John, who was also called Mark. Many people were gathered there, praying.

13And as Peter knocked at the door of the gate, a damsel came to hearken, named Rhoda.

Peter knocked at the door of the outside gate, and a servant girl named Rhoda came to answer it.

14And when she knew Peter’s voice, she opened not the gate for gladness, but ran in, and told how Peter stood before the gate.

She knew Peter's voice. She was so happy that she did not open the gate. She ran back inside and told them Peter was standing outside.

15And they said unto her, Thou art mad. But she constantly affirmed that it was even so. Then said they, It is his angel.

They said to her, "You are out of your mind." But she kept insisting it was true. So they said, "It must be his angel."

16But Peter continued knocking: and when they had opened the door, and saw him, they were astonished.

Peter kept on knocking. When they opened the door and saw him, they could hardly believe it.

17But he, beckoning unto them with the hand to hold their peace, declared unto them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. And he said, Go shew these things unto James, and to the brethren. And he departed, and went into another place.

He waved his hand for them to be quiet, and he told them how the Lord had brought him out of the prison. He said, "Tell James and the other believers about this." Then he left and went somewhere else.

24But the word of God grew and multiplied.

But God's message kept spreading and reaching more and more people.

25And Barnabas and Saul returned from Jerusalem, when they had fulfilled their ministry, and took with them John, whose surname was Mark.

Barnabas and Saul finished the job they had come to Jerusalem to do. Then they went back, and they took John, who was also called Mark, with them.

1Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.

In the church at Antioch there were prophets and teachers. They were Barnabas, Simeon called Niger, Lucius from Cyrene, Manaen, who grew up with Herod the ruler, and Saul.

2As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.

While they were worshiping the Lord and going without food to pray, the Holy Spirit said, "Set apart Barnabas and Saul for me. I have called them to a special work."

3And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.

So they went without food and prayed. Then they placed their hands on Barnabas and Saul and sent them off.

4So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

Sent out by the Holy Spirit, the two men went down to Seleucia. From there they sailed to the island of Cyprus.

5And when they were at Salamis, they preached the word of God in the synagogues of the Jews: and they had also John to their minister.

When they reached the city of Salamis, they preached God's message in the Jewish meeting places. John was with them as their helper.

13Now when Paul and his company loosed from Paphos, they came to Perga in Pamphylia: and John departing from them returned to Jerusalem.

Paul and those with him sailed from Paphos and came to Perga in the region of Pamphylia. There John left them and went back to Jerusalem.

14But when they departed from Perga, they came to Antioch in Pisidia, and went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and sat down.

From Perga they traveled on to Antioch in the region of Pisidia. On the Sabbath they went into the Jewish meeting place and sat down.

36And some days after Paul said unto Barnabas, Let us go again and visit our brethren in every city where we have preached the word of the LORD, and see how they do.

Some days later Paul said to Barnabas, "Let's go back and visit the believers in every town where we preached the word of the Lord. Let's see how they are doing."

37And Barnabas determined to take with them John, whose surname was Mark.

Barnabas wanted to take John, who was also called Mark, along with them.

38But Paul thought not good to take him with them, who departed from them from Pamphylia, and went not with them to the work.

But Paul did not think that was wise. Mark had left them back in Pamphylia and had not stayed with them for the work.

39And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

Their disagreement was so sharp that they split up and went different ways. Barnabas took Mark and sailed to Cyprus.

40And Paul chose Silas, and departed, being recommended by the brethren unto the grace of God.

Paul chose Silas and left. The believers placed him in God's kind care as he went.

41And he went through Syria and Cilicia, confirming the churches.

He traveled through Syria and Cilicia, making the churches there strong.

10Aristarchus my fellowprisoner saluteth you, and Marcus, sister’s son to Barnabas, (touching whom ye received commandments: if he come unto you, receive him;)

Aristarchus, who is in prison with me, says hello. So does Mark, the cousin of Barnabas. You already got word about Mark: if he comes to you, welcome him.

11And Jesus, which is called Justus, who are of the circumcision. These only are my fellowworkers unto the kingdom of God, which have been a comfort unto me.

Jesus, who is also called Justus, says hello. These men are the only Jewish believers working with me for God's kingdom, and they have been a comfort to me.

9Do thy diligence to come shortly unto me:

Do your best to come to me soon.

10For Demas hath forsaken me, having loved this present world, and is departed unto Thessalonica; Crescens to Galatia, Titus unto Dalmatia.

Demas loved this world and walked away from me. He went to Thessalonica. Crescens went to Galatia, and Titus went to Dalmatia.

11Only Luke is with me. Take Mark, and bring him with thee: for he is profitable to me for the ministry.

Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you. He is a real help to me in the work.

12By Silvanus, a faithful brother unto you, as I suppose, I have written briefly, exhorting, and testifying that this is the true grace of God wherein ye stand.

Silvanus helped me write this short letter. I consider him a faithful brother. I wrote to encourage you and to tell you that this is God's true grace. Stand firm in it.

13The church that is at Babylon, elected together with you, saluteth you; and so doth Marcus my son.

The church in Babylon, chosen by God along with you, sends you greetings. So does Mark, who is like a son to me.

14Greet ye one another with a kiss of charity. Peace be with you all that are in Christ Jesus. Amen.
