Jesus

38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house.

As they traveled, Jesus came to a village. A woman named Martha welcomed him into her house.

39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus’ feet, and heard his word.

Martha had a sister named Mary. Mary sat down at Jesus' feet and listened to what he said.

40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me.

But Martha was busy with all the work of serving. She came to Jesus and said, "Lord, don't you care that my sister left me to serve alone? Tell her to help me."

41And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things:

Jesus answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things."

42But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her.

"But only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen the good part, and no one will take it away from her."

1And Jesus entered and passed through Jericho.

Jesus came into the town of Jericho. He was walking through it.

2And, behold, there was a man named Zacchaeus, which was the chief among the publicans, and he was rich.

A man there was named Zacchaeus. He was a chief tax collector, and he was rich.

3And he sought to see Jesus who he was; and could not for the press, because he was little of stature.

He wanted to see who Jesus was. But he was short, and the crowd was in his way.

4And he ran before, and climbed up into a sycomore tree to see him: for he was to pass that way.

So he ran on ahead. He climbed a sycamore tree, because Jesus would pass that way.

5And when Jesus came to the place, he looked up, and saw him, and said unto him, Zacchaeus, make haste, and come down; for to day I must abide at thy house.

Jesus came to that spot and looked up. He said, "Zacchaeus, hurry down. I must stay at your house today."

6And he made haste, and came down, and received him joyfully.

So Zacchaeus hurried down. He was glad to welcome Jesus into his home.

7And when they saw it, they all murmured, saying, That he was gone to be guest with a man that is a sinner.

Everyone who saw it grumbled. They said, "He has gone to stay with a man who sins."

8And Zacchaeus stood, and said unto the Lord; Behold, Lord, the half of my goods I give to the poor; and if I have taken any thing from any man by false accusation, I restore him fourfold.

Zacchaeus stood up and said to the Lord, "Look, Lord. I give half of what I own to poor people. If I cheated anyone, I will pay back four times as much."

9And Jesus said unto him, This day is salvation come to this house, forsomuch as he also is a son of Abraham.

Jesus said to him, "Today God's saving help has come to this house. This man too is a son of Abraham, part of Abraham's family."

10For the Son of man is come to seek and to save that which was lost.

"The Son of Man came to look for lost people and save them." Son of Man was the name Jesus used for himself.

39And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his disciples also followed him.

Jesus went out to the Mount of Olives, a hill he often went to. His followers went with him.

40And when he was at the place, he said unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

When he came to the place, he said to them, "Pray that you will not be pulled into doing wrong."

41And he was withdrawn from them about a stone’s cast, and kneeled down, and prayed,

He went away from them, about as far as a person can throw a stone. He knelt down and prayed.

42Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless not my will, but thine, be done.

He said, "Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me. But do what you want, not what I want."

43And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him.

Then an angel from heaven came to him and made him strong.

44And being in an agony he prayed more earnestly: and his sweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

He hurt so much inside that he prayed even harder. His sweat fell to the ground like drops of blood.

45And when he rose up from prayer, and was come to his disciples, he found them sleeping for sorrow,

He got up from praying and came to his followers. They were asleep, worn out from being so sad.

46And said unto them, Why sleep ye? rise and pray, lest ye enter into temptation.

He said to them, "Why are you sleeping? Get up and pray, so you will not be pulled into doing wrong."

47And while he yet spake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jesus to kiss him.

While he was still talking, a crowd came. Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came close to Jesus to kiss him.

48But Jesus said unto him, Judas, betrayest thou the Son of man with a kiss?

But Jesus said to him, "Judas, are you handing over the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49When they which were about him saw what would follow, they said unto him, Lord, shall we smite with the sword?

The men with Jesus saw what was about to happen. They said, "Lord, should we fight with our swords?"

50And one of them smote the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

One of them struck the servant of the high priest, the top priest, and cut off his right ear.

51And Jesus answered and said, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

But Jesus said, "Stop! That is enough." Then he touched the man's ear and healed him.

52Then Jesus said unto the chief priests, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against a thief, with swords and staves?

The chief priests, the temple guards, and the elders had come for him. Jesus said to them, "Did you bring swords and clubs, as if I were a robber?"

53When I was daily with you in the temple, ye stretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness.

"I was with you in the temple every day, and you never grabbed me. But this is your hour, when darkness has power."

1And the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.

Then the whole group stood up. They took Jesus to Pilate, the Roman governor.

2And they began to accuse him, saying, We found this fellow perverting the nation, and forbidding to give tribute to Caesar, saying that he himself is Christ a King.

They began to blame him. They said, "This man stirs up trouble in our country. He tells people not to pay taxes to Caesar, our ruler. He says he is the Christ, a king."

3And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And he answered him and said, Thou sayest it.

Pilate asked him, "Are you the King of the Jews?" Jesus answered, "You have said so."

4Then said Pilate to the chief priests and to the people, I find no fault in this man.

Pilate said to the chief priests and the crowd, "I find nothing wrong with this man."

5And they were the more fierce, saying, He stirreth up the people, teaching throughout all Jewry, beginning from Galilee to this place.

But they said it even harder. "He gets the people all stirred up. He teaches all over Judea. He started in Galilee and came here."

6When Pilate heard of Galilee, he asked whether the man were a Galilaean.

When Pilate heard the word Galilee, he asked if the man was from there.

7And as soon as he knew that he belonged unto Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who himself also was at Jerusalem at that time.

He learned that Jesus came from the part Herod ruled. So he sent Jesus to Herod, who was in Jerusalem just then.

8And when Herod saw Jesus, he was exceeding glad: for he was desirous to see him of a long season, because he had heard many things of him; and he hoped to have seen some miracle done by him.

Herod was very glad to see Jesus. He had wanted to see him for a long time. He had heard many stories about him. He hoped to watch him do a miracle.

9Then he questioned with him in many words; but he answered him nothing.

Herod asked him many questions. But Jesus did not answer him at all.

10And the chief priests and scribes stood and vehemently accused him.

The chief priests and the scribes stood there. They kept blaming him in angry voices.

11And Herod with his men of war set him at nought, and mocked him, and arrayed him in a gorgeous robe, and sent him again to Pilate.

Herod and his soldiers treated Jesus like he was nothing. They made fun of him. They put a fine robe on him and sent him back to Pilate.

12And the same day Pilate and Herod were made friends together: for before they were at enmity between themselves.

That same day Pilate and Herod became friends. Before this they had been enemies.

13And Pilate, when he had called together the chief priests and the rulers and the people,

Then Pilate called together the chief priests, the leaders, and the people.

14Said unto them, Ye have brought this man unto me, as one that perverteth the people: and, behold, I, having examined him before you, have found no fault in this man touching those things whereof ye accuse him:

He said to them, "You brought me this man. You said he was stirring up the people. I asked him questions in front of you. I did not find him guilty of what you say.

15No, nor yet Herod: for I sent you to him; and, lo, nothing worthy of death is done unto him.

Herod did not find him guilty either. He sent him back to us. This man has done nothing that he should die for.

16I will therefore chastise him, and release him.

So I will have him whipped. Then I will let him go."

17(For of necessity he must release one unto them at the feast.)

(At the feast each year, Pilate had to set one prisoner free.)

18And they cried out all at once, saying, Away with this man, and release unto us Barabbas:

But they all shouted together, "Take this man away! Set Barabbas free for us!"

19(Who for a certain sedition made in the city, and for murder, was cast into prison.)

(Barabbas was in prison for starting a fight against the rulers, and for killing someone.)

20Pilate therefore, willing to release Jesus, spake again to them.

Pilate wanted to let Jesus go. So he spoke to them again.

21But they cried, saying, Crucify him, crucify him.

But they shouted, "Nail him to a cross! Nail him to a cross!"

22And he said unto them the third time, Why, what evil hath he done? I have found no cause of death in him: I will therefore chastise him, and let him go.

He said to them a third time, "Why? What wrong has he done? I have found no reason to put him to death. So I will have him whipped and let him go."

23And they were instant with loud voices, requiring that he might be crucified. And the voices of them and of the chief priests prevailed.

But they kept shouting louder and louder. They demanded that Jesus be nailed to a cross. Their loud shouting won.

24And Pilate gave sentence that it should be as they required.

So Pilate decided to do what they asked.

25And he released unto them him that for sedition and murder was cast into prison, whom they had desired; but he delivered Jesus to their will.

He set free the man they wanted. That man was in prison for fighting the rulers and for killing. And he handed Jesus over to them.

26And as they led him away, they laid hold upon one Simon, a Cyrenian, coming out of the country, and on him they laid the cross, that he might bear it after Jesus.

As the soldiers led Jesus away, they grabbed a man named Simon. He was from Cyrene and was coming in from the fields. They put the cross on him to carry behind Jesus.

27And there followed him a great company of people, and of women, which also bewailed and lamented him.

A big crowd followed Jesus. Some were women who cried and cried for him.

28But Jesus turning unto them said, Daughters of Jerusalem, weep not for me, but weep for yourselves, and for your children.

But Jesus turned to them and said, "Women of Jerusalem, do not cry for me. Cry for yourselves and for your children.

29For, behold, the days are coming, in the which they shall say, Blessed are the barren, and the wombs that never bare, and the paps which never gave suck.

Look, days are coming when people will say this: 'Happy are the women who never had a baby.'

30Then shall they begin to say to the mountains, Fall on us; and to the hills, Cover us.

Then people will say to the mountains, 'Fall on us!' And to the hills, 'Cover us!'

31For if they do these things in a green tree, what shall be done in the dry?

If people do this when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?"

32And there were also two other, malefactors, led with him to be put to death.

Two other men were led out with him. They were criminals, and they were going to be put to death too.

33And when they were come to the place, which is called Calvary, there they crucified him, and the malefactors, one on the right hand, and the other on the left.

They came to the place called the Skull. There they nailed Jesus to a cross. They did the same to the two criminals, one on each side of him.

34Then said Jesus, Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do. And they parted his raiment, and cast lots.

Then Jesus said, "Father, forgive them. They do not know what they are doing." The soldiers threw lots to split up his clothes.

35And the people stood beholding. And the rulers also with them derided him, saying, He saved others; let him save himself, if he be Christ, the chosen of God.

The people stood and watched. The leaders made fun of him. They said, "He saved other people. Let him save himself, if he is God's chosen one, the Christ."

36And the soldiers also mocked him, coming to him, and offering him vinegar,

The soldiers made fun of him too. They came up and held out sour wine to him.

37And saying, If thou be the king of the Jews, save thyself.

They said, "If you are the King of the Jews, save yourself!"

38And a superscription also was written over him in letters of Greek, and Latin, and Hebrew, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

A sign was put up above him. It said, THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39And one of the malefactors which were hanged railed on him, saying, If thou be Christ, save thyself and us.

One of the criminals hanging there said mean things to him. He said, "Aren't you the Christ? Save yourself and us!"

40But the other answering rebuked him, saying, Dost not thou fear God, seeing thou art in the same condemnation?

But the other man told him to stop. He said, "Don't you even fear God? You are being punished the same way.

41And we indeed justly; for we receive the due reward of our deeds: but this man hath done nothing amiss.

We are getting what we deserve. We did wrong things. But this man has done nothing wrong."

42And he said unto Jesus, Lord, remember me when thou comest into thy kingdom.

Then he said, "Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom."

43And Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, To day shalt thou be with me in paradise.

Jesus said to him, "I tell you the truth. Today you will be with me in paradise."

44And it was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour.

It was about noon. The whole land went dark until three in the afternoon.

45And the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was rent in the midst.

The sun went dark. The big curtain in the temple tore right down the middle.

46And when Jesus had cried with a loud voice, he said, Father, into thy hands I commend my spirit: and having said thus, he gave up the ghost.

Then Jesus called out in a loud voice. He said, "Father, I put my spirit in your hands." When he had said this, he died.

47Now when the centurion saw what was done, he glorified God, saying, Certainly this was a righteous man.

A Roman officer saw what happened. He praised God and said, "This man really was good and right."

48And all the people that came together to that sight, beholding the things which were done, smote their breasts, and returned.

All the people who came to watch saw what happened. They beat their chests in sadness and went home.

49And all his acquaintance, and the women that followed him from Galilee, stood afar off, beholding these things.

All the people who knew Jesus stood far off. The women who came with him from Galilee stood there too. They watched all of it.

50And, behold, there was a man named Joseph, a counsellor; and he was a good man, and a just:

There was a man named Joseph. He was a member of the ruling council. He was a good man who did what was right.

51(The same had not consented to the counsel and deed of them;) he was of Arimathaea, a city of the Jews: who also himself waited for the kingdom of God.

He had not agreed with what the others planned and did. He came from Arimathea, a town in Judea. He was waiting for the kingdom of God.

52This man went unto Pilate, and begged the body of Jesus.

This man went to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus.

53And he took it down, and wrapped it in linen, and laid it in a sepulchre that was hewn in stone, wherein never man before was laid.

He took the body down and wrapped it in linen cloth. He laid it in a tomb cut out of rock. No one had ever been laid there before.

54And that day was the preparation, and the sabbath drew on.

It was the day for getting ready. The rest day, called the Sabbath, was about to begin.

55And the women also, which came with him from Galilee, followed after, and beheld the sepulchre, and how his body was laid.

The women who came with Jesus from Galilee followed along. They saw the tomb and how his body was laid.

56And they returned, and prepared spices and ointments; and rested the sabbath day according to the commandment.

Then they went home and got sweet-smelling spices and oils ready. They rested on the Sabbath, just as God's law said.

1Now upon the first day of the week, very early in the morning, they came unto the sepulchre, bringing the spices which they had prepared, and certain others with them.

On Sunday, very early in the morning, the women came to the tomb. They brought the sweet-smelling spices they had made ready. Some other people came with them.

2And they found the stone rolled away from the sepulchre.

They found that the big stone had been rolled away from the tomb.

3And they entered in, and found not the body of the Lord Jesus.

They went inside. The body of the Lord Jesus was not there.

4And it came to pass, as they were much perplexed thereabout, behold, two men stood by them in shining garments:

They did not know what to think. Just then two men in shining clothes stood beside them.

5And as they were afraid, and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

The women were afraid and bowed their faces to the ground. The two men said, "Why are you looking for the living among the dead?

6He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

He is not here. He is alive again! Remember what he told you back in Galilee.

7Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

He said the Son of Man, the name Jesus used for himself, must be handed over to sinful men. He would be nailed to a cross. On the third day he would rise again."

8And they remembered his words,

Then the women remembered what Jesus had said.

9And returned from the sepulchre, and told all these things unto the eleven, and to all the rest.

They came back from the tomb. They told all of this to the eleven apostles and to everyone else. The apostles were the close followers Jesus had chosen.

10It was Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the mother of James, and other women that were with them, which told these things unto the apostles.

The women were Mary Magdalene, Joanna, and Mary the mother of James. Other women were with them. They are the ones who told the apostles.

11And their words seemed to them as idle tales, and they believed them not.

But the apostles thought it was silly talk. They did not believe the women.

12Then arose Peter, and ran unto the sepulchre; and stooping down, he beheld the linen clothes laid by themselves, and departed, wondering in himself at that which was come to pass.

Then Peter got up and ran to the tomb. He bent down and saw only the linen cloths lying there. He went away, wondering what had happened.

13And, behold, two of them went that same day to a village called Emmaus, which was from Jerusalem about threescore furlongs.

That same day two of them were walking to a village called Emmaus. It was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

14And they talked together of all these things which had happened.

They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.

15And it came to pass, that, while they communed together and reasoned, Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

While they talked it over, Jesus himself came near and walked along with them.

16But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

But something kept them from knowing who he was.

17And he said unto them, What manner of communications are these that ye have one to another, as ye walk, and are sad?

He asked them, "What are you talking about as you walk along?" They stopped, looking very sad.

18And the one of them, whose name was Cleopas, answering said unto him, Art thou only a stranger in Jerusalem, and hast not known the things which are come to pass there in these days?

One of them, named Cleopas, said, "Are you the only visitor in Jerusalem who does not know what has happened these last few days?"

19And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

"What things?" he asked. They said, "The things about Jesus of Nazareth. He was a prophet, someone who spoke God's words. He said and did powerful things in front of God and all the people.

20And how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him to be condemned to death, and have crucified him.

Our chief priests and leaders handed him over to be sentenced to death. They nailed him to a cross.

21But we trusted that it had been he which should have redeemed Israel: and beside all this, to day is the third day since these things were done.

We hoped he was the one who would set Israel free. And today is the third day since all this happened.

22Yea, and certain women also of our company made us astonished, which were early at the sepulchre;

Some women in our group surprised us. They went to the tomb early this morning.

23And when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, which said that he was alive.

They did not find his body. They came and told us they had seen angels, who said Jesus is alive.

24And certain of them which were with us went to the sepulchre, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

Then some of our friends went to the tomb. They found it just as the women had said. But they did not see him."

25Then he said unto them, O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the prophets have spoken:

Then Jesus said to them, "How foolish you are! Your hearts are so slow to believe everything the prophets said.

26Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and to enter into his glory?

Did the Christ, the king God promised to send, not have to suffer all this and then enter his glory?"

27And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

He began with Moses and all the prophets. He explained to them what all the Scriptures said about himself. The Scriptures are God's holy writings.

28And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they went: and he made as though he would have gone further.

They came near the village where they were going. Jesus acted as if he were going farther.

29But they constrained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. And he went in to tarry with them.

But they begged him, "Stay with us. It is almost evening, and the day is nearly over." So he went in to stay with them.

30And it came to pass, as he sat at meat with them, he took bread, and blessed it, and brake, and gave to them.

He sat at the table with them. He took bread, thanked God for it, broke it, and gave it to them.

31And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

Then their eyes were opened, and they knew who he was. And he disappeared from their sight.

32And they said one to another, Did not our heart burn within us, while he talked with us by the way, and while he opened to us the scriptures?

They said to each other, "Our hearts felt warm inside while he talked with us on the road. He opened up the Scriptures for us."

33And they rose up the same hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

They got up that very hour and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven and their friends together.

34Saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

The group was saying, "The Lord is truly alive again! He has shown himself to Simon."

35And they told what things were done in the way, and how he was known of them in breaking of bread.

Then the two told what had happened on the road. They told how they knew him when he broke the bread.
