Conspires With Jozachar and Kills King Joash
20Some of his own servants made a secret plan against him. They killed Joash at Beth-millo, on the road going down to Silla.
And his servants arose, and made a conspiracy, and slew Joash in the house of Millo, which goeth down to Silla.
Beth-millo was a strong, built-up part of Jerusalem. It was near the king's palace.
21The men who struck him were Jozachar son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. Joash died, and they buried him with his family in the City of David. His son Amaziah became king after him.
For Jozachar the son of Shimeath, and Jehozabad the son of Shomer, his servants, smote him, and he died; and they buried him with his fathers in the city of David: and Amaziah his son reigned in his stead.
The City of David was the oldest part of Jerusalem. The kings of Judah were buried there.
Slays Joash on His Bed for Jehoiada's Sons
25When the army of Aram left, Joash was badly hurt. His own servants made a plan against him. They were angry that he had killed the son of Jehoiada the priest. They killed Joash in his bed. He was buried in the City of David, but not in the tombs of the kings.
And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.
A tomb is a room cut into rock where dead people were laid. Kings had their own tombs. Not being buried there showed people were ashamed of him.
26These are the men who planned against him. One was Zabad, whose mother Shimeath was from Ammon. The other was Jehozabad, whose mother Shimrith was from Moab.
And these are they that conspired against him; Zabad the son of Shimeath an Ammonitess, and Jehozabad the son of Shimrith a Moabitess.
Ammon and Moab were lands near Israel. The writer tells us where the two men's mothers came from.
