Romans 9:10-13

Election of Jacob Before the Twins Were Born

10And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;

There is more. Rebecca had twin sons, and both had the same father, Isaac.

11(For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of him that calleth;)

Before the twins were born, before either one had done anything good or bad, God spoke. He did this so his plan of choosing would stand.

12It was said unto her, The elder shall serve the younger.

It did not depend on what they did but on God who calls. God told her, "The older son will serve the younger son."

13As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated.

As the Scriptures say, "I loved Jacob, but I hated Esau."
