Noah's Three Sons Named Before the Flood

9These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.

This is the story of Noah. Noah did what was right. No one among the people of his time could blame him. Noah stayed close to God.

10And Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Noah had three sons. Their names were Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

11The earth also was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence.

God saw that the earth had gone bad. It was full of people hurting each other.

12And God looked upon the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted his way upon the earth.

God looked at the earth and saw that it had gone bad. Every living thing had turned to the wrong way of living.

13And God said unto Noah, The end of all flesh is come before me; for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

God said to Noah, "I have decided to end all living things. The earth is full of people hurting each other. So I will destroy them, and the earth with them."

Ham Enters the Ark With His Family

11In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

It was the six hundredth year of Noah's life. It was the seventeenth day of the second month. On that very day, deep waters under the ground burst open. The sky opened, and rain poured down.

12And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

Rain fell on the earth for forty days and forty nights.

13In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

On that same day Noah went into the ark. His sons Shem, Ham, and Japheth went with him. So did his wife and the wives of his three sons.

14They, and every beast after his kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind, and every fowl after his kind, every bird of every sort.

With them came every kind of wild animal and farm animal. Every kind of crawling creature came. Every kind of bird and winged creature came too.

15And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh, wherein is the breath of life.

They came to Noah and went into the ark two by two. Every kind of creature that breathes was there.

16And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as God had commanded him: and the LORD shut him in.

A male and a female of every kind went in, just as God had said. Then the LORD shut the door behind them.

Genesis 9:18-29

Ham Sees Noah's Nakedness; Canaan Cursed

18And the sons of Noah, that went forth of the ark, were Shem, and Ham, and Japheth: and Ham is the father of Canaan.

Noah's sons who came out of the boat were Shem, Ham, and Japheth. Ham was the father of Canaan.

19These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread.

These were Noah's three sons. All the people on earth came from them.

20And Noah began to be an husbandman, and he planted a vineyard:

Noah was a farmer. He planted a field of grape vines.

21And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his tent.

He drank some of the wine and got drunk. He lay in his tent with no clothes on.

22And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brethren without.

Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father with no clothes on. He went out and told his two brothers.

23And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were backward, and they saw not their father’s nakedness.

Shem and Japheth took a coat and laid it over their shoulders. They walked backward into the tent and covered their father. They looked away, so they did not see him.

24And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his younger son had done unto him.

Noah woke up when the wine wore off. He learned what his youngest son had done to him.

25And he said, Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he be unto his brethren.

He said, "A curse is on Canaan. He will be the lowest servant to his brothers."

26And he said, Blessed be the LORD God of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

He also said, "Praise the LORD, the God of Shem. May Canaan be Shem's servant.

27God shall enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the tents of Shem; and Canaan shall be his servant.

"May God give Japheth more land. May he live in the tents of Shem. And may Canaan be his servant."

28And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years.

Noah lived 350 years after the flood.

29And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years: and he died.

Noah lived 950 years in all. Then he died.

Genesis 10:1-20

The Sons of Ham and Their Nations

1Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah, Shem, Ham, and Japheth: and unto them were sons born after the flood.

This is the family list of Noah's sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth. They had sons of their own after the big flood.

2The sons of Japheth; Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and Tiras.

Japheth's sons were Gomer, Magog, Madai, Javan, Tubal, Meshech, and Tiras.

3And the sons of Gomer; Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah.

Gomer's sons were Ashkenaz, Riphath, and Togarmah.

4And the sons of Javan; Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

Javan's sons were Elishah, Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim.

5By these were the isles of the Gentiles divided in their lands; every one after his tongue, after their families, in their nations.

From these families came the people who lived by the sea and on islands. Each group had its own land, its own language, and its own nation.

6And the sons of Ham; Cush, and Mizraim, and Phut, and Canaan.

Ham's sons were Cush, Mizraim, Phut, and Canaan.

7And the sons of Cush; Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and Raamah, and Sabtechah: and the sons of Raamah; Sheba, and Dedan.

Cush's sons were Seba, Havilah, Sabtah, Raamah, and Sabtechah. Raamah's sons were Sheba and Dedan.

8And Cush begat Nimrod: he began to be a mighty one in the earth.

Cush was the father of Nimrod. Nimrod grew up to be a strong and powerful man on the earth.

9He was a mighty hunter before the LORD: wherefore it is said, Even as Nimrod the mighty hunter before the LORD.

He was a great hunter before the LORD. So people would say, "Like Nimrod, the great hunter before the LORD."

10And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and Calneh, in the land of Shinar.

His kingdom began with the cities Babel, Erech, Accad, and Calneh. They were in the land of Shinar.

11Out of that land went forth Asshur, and builded Nineveh, and the city Rehoboth, and Calah,

From that land he went to Assyria. There he built the cities Nineveh, Rehoboth, and Calah.

12And Resen between Nineveh and Calah: the same is a great city.

He also built Resen, which sits between Nineveh and Calah. Calah was a great city.

13And Mizraim begat Ludim, and Anamim, and Lehabim, and Naphtuhim,

Mizraim was the father of the Ludim, the Anamim, the Lehabim, and the Naphtuhim.

14And Pathrusim, and Casluhim, (out of whom came Philistim,) and Caphtorim.

He was also father of the Pathrusim and the Casluhim. The Philistines came from the Casluhim. He was father of the Caphtorim too.

15And Canaan begat Sidon his first born, and Heth,

Canaan's first son was Sidon. His next son was Heth.

16And the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgasite,

From Canaan also came the Jebusites, the Amorites, and the Girgasites.

17And the Hivite, and the Arkite, and the Sinite,

From him came the Hivites, the Arkites, and the Sinites.

18And the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the Hamathite: and afterward were the families of the Canaanites spread abroad.

From him came the Arvadites, the Zemarites, and the Hamathites. Later these Canaanite families spread out far and wide.

19And the border of the Canaanites was from Sidon, as thou comest to Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou goest, unto Sodom, and Gomorrah, and Admah, and Zeboim, even unto Lasha.

The land of Canaan reached from Sidon toward Gerar, as far as Gaza. It also reached toward Sodom, Gomorrah, Admah, and Zeboim, as far as Lasha.

20These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after their tongues, in their countries, and in their nations.

These are the sons of Ham. They are listed by family, by language, by land, and by nation.

Psalms 105:23-27

Israel Sojourns in the Land of Ham

23Israel also came into Egypt; and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

Then Israel came into Egypt. Jacob lived as a stranger in the land of Ham.

24And he increased his people greatly; and made them stronger than their enemies.

God gave his people many children. They grew stronger than the people who hated them.

25He turned their heart to hate his people, to deal subtilly with his servants.

He turned the Egyptians' hearts to hate his people. They made sly plans against his servants.

26He sent Moses his servant; and Aaron whom he had chosen.

So he sent Moses, who served him. He also sent Aaron, whom he had chosen.

27They shewed his signs among them, and wonders in the land of Ham.

They showed God's signs to the Egyptians. They did wonders in the land of Ham.
