Born to Zilpah and Named Gad by Leah
9Leah saw that she had stopped having children. So she took her servant Zilpah. She gave her to Jacob to be his wife.
When Leah saw that she had left bearing, she took Zilpah her maid, and gave her Jacob to wife.
10Zilpah, Leah's servant, had a son for Jacob.
And Zilpah Leah’s maid bare Jacob a son.
11Leah said, "Good fortune has come!" She named him Gad.
And Leah said, A troop cometh: and she called his name Gad.
"Gad" sounds like the Hebrew word for good luck. Leah is saying that something good has come to her.
Jacob's Blessing: a Troop Shall Overcome Him
19"Gad, a band of fighters will beat him. But in the end he will beat them."
Gad, a troop shall overcome him: but he shall overcome at the last.
A band of fighters came to attack and steal things. Gad's name sounds like the words for attack.
Moses Blesses Gad Before His Death
20About Gad he said: "Praise God, who gives Gad more land! Gad lies down like a lion. He tears off an arm or a head."
And of Gad he said, Blessed be he that enlargeth Gad: he dwelleth as a lion, and teareth the arm with the crown of the head.
Gad was another son of Jacob. His family group lived east of the Jordan River.
21"He chose the best land for himself. A ruler's share was saved for him there. He came with the leaders of the people. He did what the LORD said was right and fair for Israel."
And he provided the first part for himself, because there, in a portion of the lawgiver, was he seated; and he came with the heads of the people, he executed the justice of the LORD, and his judgments with Israel.
