Abraham

26And Terah lived seventy years, and begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

Terah was 70 years old when his sons were born. Their names were Abram, Nahor, and Haran.

27Now these are the generations of Terah: Terah begat Abram, Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begat Lot.

Here is the family list of Terah. Terah was the father of Abram, Nahor, and Haran. Haran was the father of Lot.

28And Haran died before his father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees.

Haran died while his father Terah was still alive. He died in the land where he was born, in Ur, a city of the Chaldeans.

29And Abram and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram’s wife was Sarai; and the name of Nahor’s wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the father of Iscah.

Abram and Nahor both got married. Abram's wife was named Sarai. Nahor's wife was named Milcah. Milcah was Haran's daughter. Haran was also the father of Iscah.

30But Sarai was barren; she had no child.

But Sarai could not have babies. She had no children.

31And Terah took Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran his son’s son, and Sarai his daughter in law, his son Abram’s wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and dwelt there.

Terah took his son Abram with him. He also took his grandson Lot, the son of Haran. He took Sarai too, who was Abram's wife. They left Ur to go to the land of Canaan. But they came to a place called Haran and stayed there.

32And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years: and Terah died in Haran.

Terah lived 205 years. Then he died in Haran.

1Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will shew thee:

The LORD had spoken to a man named Abram. He said, "Leave your country. Leave your relatives and your father's house. Go to a land I will show you."

2And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing:

"I will grow your family into a great nation. I will be good to you and make your name famous. You will bring good things to other people."

3And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed.

"I will be good to anyone who is good to you. I will curse anyone who curses you. Every family on earth will be blessed because of you."

4So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran.

So Abram left, just as the LORD had told him. His nephew Lot went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old when he left the town of Haran.

5And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother’s son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came.

Abram took his wife Sarai and his nephew Lot. They took everything they owned. They also took the workers they had gained in Haran. They set out for the land of Canaan, and they got there.

6And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.

Abram traveled through the land to a place called Sichem. He came to the big tree of Moreh. The people called Canaanites lived in that land then.

7And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.

The LORD let Abram see him. He said, "I will give this land to your children and their children." So Abram built an altar there for the LORD, who had shown himself to him. An altar is a stone place where gifts were given to God.

8And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Bethel, and pitched his tent, having Bethel on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.

Then Abram moved to the hills east of a town called Bethel. He put up his tent there. Bethel was to the west and Hai was to the east. He built another altar there and prayed to the LORD.

9And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the south.

Then Abram traveled on again, going toward the south.

10And there was a famine in the land: and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the famine was grievous in the land.

Food ran out in that land, and people went hungry. So Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while. The hunger in his land was very bad.

11And it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife, Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon:

When they were almost in Egypt, Abram talked to his wife Sarai. He said, "Look, I know you are a beautiful woman."

12Therefore it shall come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they shall say, This is his wife: and they will kill me, but they will save thee alive.

"When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'She is his wife.' Then they will kill me, but they will let you live."

13Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister: that it may be well with me for thy sake; and my soul shall live because of thee.

"Please say that you are my sister. Then they will treat me well because of you. My life will be saved because of you."

14And it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the woman that she was very fair.

So Abram came into Egypt. The Egyptians looked at Sarai and saw she was very beautiful.

15The princes also of Pharaoh saw her, and commended her before Pharaoh: and the woman was taken into Pharaoh’s house.

Pharaoh's leaders saw her too. Pharaoh was the king of Egypt. They told the king how lovely she was. So Sarai was taken to Pharaoh's house.

16And he entreated Abram well for her sake: and he had sheep, and oxen, and he asses, and menservants, and maidservants, and she asses, and camels.

Pharaoh treated Abram well because of her. Abram was given sheep, cows, donkeys, camels, and servants, both men and women.

17And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai Abram’s wife.

But the LORD sent terrible sicknesses on Pharaoh and everyone in his house. This happened because of Sarai, Abram's wife.

18And Pharaoh called Abram, and said, What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?

So Pharaoh sent for Abram. He said, "What have you done to me? Why didn't you tell me she was your wife?"

19Why saidst thou, She is my sister? so I might have taken her to me to wife: now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.

"Why did you say, 'She is my sister'? I took her to be my own wife. Here is your wife. Take her and go."

20And Pharaoh commanded his men concerning him: and they sent him away, and his wife, and all that he had.

Then Pharaoh gave orders to his men about Abram. They sent Abram away with his wife and everything he owned.

1And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him, into the south.

Abram left Egypt and went up into the dry land in the south. His wife went with him, and so did Lot. They took everything they owned.

2And Abram was very rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold.

Abram was very rich. He had many animals, and much silver and gold.

3And he went on his journeys from the south even to Bethel, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Hai;

He traveled from place to place until he came near Bethel. It was the same spot where he had camped before. It lay between Bethel and Ai.

4Unto the place of the altar, which he had made there at the first: and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

That was where he had built an altar, a stone place for giving gifts to God. There Abram prayed to the LORD.

5And Lot also, which went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents.

Lot traveled with Abram. He also had sheep, goats, cows, and tents.

6And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together: for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.

The land could not feed both of them in one place. They owned too many animals. So they could not stay together.

7And there was a strife between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.

Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen began to fight. Herdsmen are the workers who take care of the animals. Other people, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, lived in that land then too.

8And Abram said unto Lot, Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between my herdmen and thy herdmen; for we be brethren.

Abram said to Lot, "Please, let there be no fighting between you and me. Our workers should not fight either. We are family."

9Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me: if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou depart to the right hand, then I will go to the left.

"The whole land is right here in front of you. Please move away from me. If you go one way, I will go the other way."

10And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain of Jordan, that it was well watered every where, before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, even as the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as thou comest unto Zoar.

Lot looked out and saw the flat land by the Jordan River. It had water everywhere, all the way to a town called Zoar. It looked like God's own garden, or like the land of Egypt. This was before the LORD destroyed the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah.

11Then Lot chose him all the plain of Jordan; and Lot journeyed east: and they separated themselves the one from the other.

So Lot chose all the flat land by the Jordan for himself. He traveled east. The two men went their separate ways.

12Abram dwelled in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelled in the cities of the plain, and pitched his tent toward Sodom.

Abram lived in the land of Canaan. Lot lived among the towns on the flat land. He set up his tent near the city of Sodom.

13But the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners before the LORD exceedingly.

But the men of Sodom were very bad. They did many wrong things against the LORD.

14And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was separated from him, Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou art northward, and southward, and eastward, and westward:

After Lot left, the LORD spoke to Abram. "Look around from the place where you stand. Look north and south, east and west."

15For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever.

"All the land you see, I will give to you. I will give it to your family after you, for always."

16And I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth: so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered.

"Your family will grow to be like the dust on the ground. No one can count the dust. No one will be able to count them."

17Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and in the breadth of it; for I will give it unto thee.

"Get up and walk through the land. Go the long way across it and the wide way. I am giving it to you."

18Then Abram removed his tent, and came and dwelt in the plain of Mamre, which is in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the LORD.

So Abram moved his tent. He went to live by the big oak trees at Mamre, near the town of Hebron. There he built an altar to the LORD.

13And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram.

One man got away and told Abram the Hebrew what had happened. Abram was living by the big trees of Mamre the Amorite. Mamre and his brothers Eshcol and Aner had promised to stand with Abram.

14And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan.

Abram heard that Lot, his own family, had been carried off. So he called out the 318 trained men born in his house. They chased the enemy all the way to Dan.

15And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus.

That night Abram split his men into groups and attacked from more than one side. They beat the enemy and chased them to Hobah, north of Damascus.

16And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

Abram brought back all the goods that had been taken. He brought back Lot and Lot's things, and the women and the other people too.

17And the king of Sodom went out to meet him after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer, and of the kings that were with him, at the valley of Shaveh, which is the king’s dale.

Abram came home after beating Chedorlaomer and the kings with him. The king of Sodom came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh, also called the King's Valley.

18And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.

Melchizedek, the king of Salem, brought out bread and wine. He was a priest, a man whose work was serving God Most High.

19And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:

He blessed Abram and said, "May God Most High bless Abram. God Most High made heaven and earth, and they belong to him.

20And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.

And blessed be God Most High. He has handed your enemies over to you." Then Abram gave Melchizedek one tenth of everything he had brought back.

21And the king of Sodom said unto Abram, Give me the persons, and take the goods to thyself.

The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me back my people. You may keep all the goods for yourself."

22And Abram said to the king of Sodom, I have lift up mine hand unto the LORD, the most high God, the possessor of heaven and earth,

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have raised my hand and promised something to the LORD, God Most High, who made heaven and earth and owns it all.

23That I will not take from a thread even to a shoelatchet, and that I will not take any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say, I have made Abram rich:

I will not take even one thread from you, or one strap from a sandal. I will not take anything that is yours. Then you can never say, 'I am the one who made Abram rich.'

24Save only that which the young men have eaten, and the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre; let them take their portion.

The only thing I will take is the food my young men have eaten. And let my friends Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre take their share, since they went with me."

1After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying, Fear not, Abram: I am thy shield, and thy exceeding great reward.

After these things, the LORD spoke to Abram in a vision. A vision is like a picture God shows someone. God said, "Do not be afraid, Abram. I am your shield. I will keep you safe. I am your very great reward."

2And Abram said, LORD God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

Abram said, "Lord God, what good is anything you give me? I have no children. My servant Eliezer, from the city of Damascus, runs my house. He will get everything I own."

3And Abram said, Behold, to me thou hast given no seed: and, lo, one born in my house is mine heir.

Abram said again, "You have not given me any children. So a servant born in my house will get all I have."

4And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

Then the LORD said to him, "That servant will not get your things. You will have a son of your very own. He will get everything."

5And he brought him forth abroad, and said, Look now toward heaven, and tell the stars, if thou be able to number them: and he said unto him, So shall thy seed be.

God brought Abram outside and said, "Look up at the sky. Count the stars, if you can count them." Then God said, "That is how many people will come from you."

6And he believed in the LORD; and he counted it to him for righteousness.

Abram believed the LORD. And God said that Abram was right with him because he believed.

7And he said unto him, I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this land to inherit it.

God said to him, "I am the LORD. I brought you out of the city of Ur, in the land of the Chaldeans. I did that to give you this land to keep."

8And he said, LORD God, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?

Abram said, "Lord God, how can I know this land will really be mine?"

9And he said unto him, Take me an heifer of three years old, and a she goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and a turtledove, and a young pigeon.

God said to him, "Bring me a young cow, a goat, and a ram. A ram is a boy sheep. Each one must be three years old. Bring a dove and a young pigeon too."

10And he took unto him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each piece one against another: but the birds divided he not.

Abram brought all of them to God. He cut each animal in half. He laid the halves down facing each other. He did not cut the two birds.

11And when the fowls came down upon the carcases, Abram drove them away.

Big hungry birds came down to eat the dead animals. Abram chased them away.

12And when the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, an horror of great darkness fell upon him.

As the sun was going down, Abram fell into a deep sleep. A thick darkness came over him, and he was very afraid.

13And he said unto Abram, Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred years;

God said to Abram, "Know this for sure. Your family will live in a land that is not their own. They will be made slaves there. People will treat them badly for four hundred years."

14And also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge: and afterward shall they come out with great substance.

"But I will punish the nation that makes them slaves. After that, your family will leave with many good things."

15And thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt be buried in a good old age.

"But you yourself will die in peace. You will live to be very old, and you will be buried."

16But in the fourth generation they shall come hither again: for the iniquity of the Amorites is not yet full.

"Your family will come back here after four family lives have passed. The people called Amorites live here now. They are not yet done doing wrong."

17And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down, and it was dark, behold a smoking furnace, and a burning lamp that passed between those pieces.

When the sun was down and it was dark, something appeared. It was a smoking pot of fire and a burning torch. They moved between the pieces of the animals.

18In the same day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates:

That day the LORD made a covenant with Abram. A covenant is a strong promise that will not be broken. God said, "I give this land to your family. It reaches from the river of Egypt to the big river called the Euphrates."

19The Kenites, and the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites,

"That land is where the Kenites, the Kenizzites, and the Kadmonites live."

20And the Hittites, and the Perizzites, and the Rephaims,

"The Hittites, the Perizzites, and the Rephaites live there too."

21And the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Girgashites, and the Jebusites.

"So do the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

1Now Sarai Abram’s wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

Sarai was Abram's wife. She had never had any children. She had a servant girl from Egypt named Hagar.

2And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

Sarai said to Abram, "God has not let me have a baby. Please have a baby with my servant Hagar. Then maybe I can have a family through her." Abram did what Sarai said.

3And Sarai Abram’s wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife.

By now Abram had lived ten years in the land of Canaan. Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian servant, and gave her to Abram to be his wife.

4And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

Abram and Hagar had a baby starting to grow inside her. When Hagar knew this, she began to look down on Sarai.

5And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee.

Sarai said to Abram, "This hurt is your fault. I gave my servant to you. Now she knows she is having a baby. She looks down on me. Let God decide who is right, you or me."

6But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face.

Abram said, "Your servant belongs to you. Do what you think is best." Then Sarai was very mean to Hagar. So Hagar ran away from her.

7And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

God sent a messenger to Hagar. He found her in the dry, empty land. She was beside a spring of water on the road to Shur.

8And he said, Hagar, Sarai’s maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.

He said, "Hagar, servant of Sarai, where did you come from? Where are you going?" She said, "I am running away from Sarai."

9And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

The messenger from God said to her, "Go back to Sarai. Do what she tells you to do."

10And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

The messenger from God also said, "I will give you so many children and grandchildren that no one will be able to count them."

11And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.

The messenger from God said, "You are going to have a baby boy. Name him Ishmael. God has heard how much you are hurting."

12And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man’s hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren.

"He will live wild and free. He will fight with everyone, and everyone will fight with him. He will live near all his family, but not in peace with them."

13And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?

Hagar gave a name to God, who had talked with her. She called him "You are the God who sees me." She said, "Have I really seen the One who sees me?"

14Wherefore the well was called Beerlahairoi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

That is why people call the well Beerlahairoi. It is between the towns of Kadesh and Bered.

15And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son’s name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael.

Hagar had a baby boy for Abram. Abram named him Ishmael.

16And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

Abram was eighty-six years old when Ishmael was born.

1And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect.

Abram was ninety-nine years old. The LORD came to him and said, "I am God Almighty, the strongest of all. Live your life close to me. Do what is right."

2And I will make my covenant between me and thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.

"I will make an agreement with you, a promise between you and me. I will give you a very large family."

3And Abram fell on his face: and God talked with him, saying,

Abram bowed down with his face to the ground. God kept talking to him.

4As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.

God said, "Here is my part of the promise. You will be the father of many nations."

5Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee.

"People will not call you Abram anymore. Your name will now be Abraham. That is because I have made you the father of many nations."

6And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee.

"Your family will grow and grow. Whole nations will come from you. Some of your family will be kings."

7And I will establish my covenant between me and thee and thy seed after thee in their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee, and to thy seed after thee.

"My promise is between me and you and your children after you. It will last forever, family after family. I will be your God, and their God too."

8And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after thee, the land wherein thou art a stranger, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting possession; and I will be their God.

"You live in the land of Canaan now, but it is not yours. I will give all of it to you and your children forever. And I will be their God."

9And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations.

Then God said to Abraham, "You must keep your part of the promise. Your children and their children must keep it too."

10This is my covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every man child among you shall be circumcised.

"Here is what you must do to keep my promise. Every boy and man among you must be circumcised."

11And ye shall circumcise the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token of the covenant betwixt me and you.

"A small fold of skin is cut off the body. This will be the sign of the promise between me and you."

12And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you, every man child in your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought with money of any stranger, which is not of thy seed.

"Do this to every baby boy when he is eight days old. Do it in every family, always. Do it for boys born in your house, and for servants you bought from strangers."

13He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be circumcised: and my covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant.

"Every boy born in your house must be circumcised. So must every boy you bought. This mark on your body shows my promise that lasts forever."

14And the uncircumcised man child whose flesh of his foreskin is not circumcised, that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken my covenant.

"If a boy or man is not circumcised, he will be cut off from his people. He has broken my promise."

15And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be.

God also said to Abraham, "Do not call your wife Sarai anymore. Her name will now be Sarah."

16And I will bless her, and give thee a son also of her: yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of people shall be of her.

"I will be good to her. I will give you a son through her. Whole nations will come from her, and some of her family will be kings."

17Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and said in his heart, Shall a child be born unto him that is an hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?

Abraham bowed down with his face to the ground and laughed. He thought, "Can a man of a hundred have a baby? Can Sarah have a baby at ninety?"

18And Abraham said unto God, O that Ishmael might live before thee!

Then Abraham said to God, "Please let Ishmael live and be blessed by you!"

19And God said, Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son indeed; and thou shalt call his name Isaac: and I will establish my covenant with him for an everlasting covenant, and with his seed after him.

God said, "No, your wife Sarah really will have a son. Name him Isaac. I will keep my promise with him and his children forever."

20And as for Ishmael, I have heard thee: Behold, I have blessed him, and will make him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and I will make him a great nation.

"I have heard what you asked about Ishmael. I will be good to him. His family will grow very large. He will have twelve sons who become rulers, and he will become a great nation."

21But my covenant will I establish with Isaac, which Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.

"But my promise will go on through Isaac. Sarah will give birth to him at this same time next year."

22And he left off talking with him, and God went up from Abraham.

When God finished talking with Abraham, he went up and away from him.

23And Abraham took Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his money, every male among the men of Abraham’s house; and circumcised the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.

That very same day, Abraham did what God said. He circumcised his son Ishmael. He circumcised every male in his house, both those born there and those he had bought.

24And Abraham was ninety years old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

Abraham was ninety-nine years old when he was circumcised.

25And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.

His son Ishmael was thirteen years old when he was circumcised.

26In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son.

Abraham and his son Ishmael were both circumcised on the same day.

27And all the men of his house, born in the house, and bought with money of the stranger, were circumcised with him.

Every man in his house was circumcised with him. That included men born in his house and men bought from strangers.
