Joshua
Chapter 21
The Levite leaders ask for the towns God promised them, since their tribe was given no land of its own. The chapter lists all forty-eight towns, spread through every tribe of Israel, with the grassland around each one. Six of these towns are safe towns for someone who killed a person by accident. The chapter ends by saying God kept every promise he made about the land.

Then came near the heads of the fathers of the Levites unto Eleazar the priest, and unto Joshua the son of Nun, and unto the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel;
1The leaders of the Levite families came to Eleazar the priest. The Levites were the tribe who did God's work. They also came to Joshua son of Nun and to the other tribe leaders.
2And they spake unto them at Shiloh in the land of Canaan, saying, The LORD commanded by the hand of Moses to give us cities to dwell in, with the suburbs thereof for our cattle.
2They spoke to them at Shiloh, in the land of Canaan. They said, "The LORD told Moses to give us towns to live in. He also said to give us open land for our animals."
The old word "suburbs" here does not mean neighborhoods with houses. It means open, grassy land around a town where animals could eat.
3And the children of Israel gave unto the Levites out of their inheritance, at the commandment of the LORD, these cities and their suburbs.
3So the people of Israel obeyed what the LORD said. They gave the Levites these towns and open land out of their own land.
4And the lot came out for the families of the Kohathites: and the children of Aaron the priest, which were of the Levites, had by lot out of the tribe of Judah, and out of the tribe of Simeon, and out of the tribe of Benjamin, thirteen cities.
4They drew lots to decide who got what. The first lot picked the families of Kohath. Some of these Levites came from Aaron the priest. They got thirteen towns from the tribes of Judah, Simeon, and Benjamin.
Drawing lots was a way of choosing, a bit like drawing straws. The people did this to let God decide the answer.
5And the rest of the children of Kohath had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Ephraim, and out of the tribe of Dan, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh, ten cities.
5The rest of Kohath's families got ten towns. These came from the tribes of Ephraim and Dan, and from half of the tribe of Manasseh.
6And the children of Gershon had by lot out of the families of the tribe of Issachar, and out of the tribe of Asher, and out of the tribe of Naphtali, and out of the half tribe of Manasseh in Bashan, thirteen cities.

8And the children of Israel gave by lot unto the Levites these cities with their suburbs, as the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses.
8So the people of Israel drew lots and gave the Levites these towns. They gave the open land around them too. This is just what the LORD had told Moses.
9And they gave out of the tribe of the children of Judah, and out of the tribe of the children of Simeon, these cities which are here mentioned by name,
9From the tribes of Judah and Simeon they gave the towns named here.
10Which the children of Aaron, being of the families of the Kohathites, who were of the children of Levi, had: for theirs was the first lot.

11And they gave them the city of Arba the father of Anak, which city is Hebron, in the hill country of Judah, with the suburbs thereof round about it.
11They gave them the town of Arba, who was the father of Anak. That town is now called Hebron, up in the hills of Judah. They got the open land all around it too.
12But the fields of the city, and the villages thereof, gave they to Caleb the son of Jephunneh for his possession.
12But the farm fields and small villages near the town were not theirs. Those had been given to Caleb son of Jephunneh to keep.
13Thus they gave to the children of Aaron the priest Hebron with her suburbs, to be a city of refuge for the slayer; and Libnah with her suburbs,
13So they gave Aaron's family Hebron and its open land. Hebron was a safe town for someone who killed a person by accident. They also gave them Libnah and its open land,
A safe town was a place someone could run to if they killed a person by accident. They would be kept safe there until leaders looked at what happened.

22and Kibzaim with its open land, and Bethhoron with its open land. That made four towns.

34And unto the families of the children of Merari, the rest of the Levites, out of the tribe of Zebulun, Jokneam with her suburbs, and Kartah with her suburbs,
34Merari's families were the rest of the Levites. From the tribe of Zebulun they got Jokneam with its open land, and Kartah with its open land,

41All the cities of the Levites within the possession of the children of Israel were forty and eight cities with their suburbs.
41The Levites had forty-eight towns in all. These towns were inside the land of the other tribes. Each one had open land around it.
42These cities were every one with their suburbs round about them: thus were all these cities.
42Every one of these towns had open land all around it. That was true for all of them.
43And the LORD gave unto Israel all the land which he sware to give unto their fathers; and they possessed it, and dwelt therein.
43So the LORD gave Israel all the land he had promised to their fathers long ago. They took it and lived in it.
44And the LORD gave them rest round about, according to all that he sware unto their fathers: and there stood not a man of all their enemies before them; the LORD delivered all their enemies into their hand.
44The LORD gave them peace on every side, just as he had promised their fathers. No enemy could stand up to them. The LORD handed all their enemies over to them.
45There failed not ought of any good thing which the LORD had spoken unto the house of Israel; all came to pass.
45Not one good thing the LORD had promised Israel failed. Every single promise came true.
