Job 42

Then Job answered the LORD, and said,

1Then Job answered the LORD. He said:

2I know that thou canst do every thing, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.

2"I know You can do anything. No plan of Yours can be stopped.

3Who is he that hideth counsel without knowledge? therefore have I uttered that I understood not; things too wonderful for me, which I knew not.

3You asked me who talks about Your plans without knowing them. That was me. I talked about things I did not understand. They were too great for me to know.

4Hear, I beseech thee, and I will speak: I will demand of thee, and declare thou unto me.

4You said, 'Listen, and I will speak. I will ask you questions, and you will answer Me.'

5I have heard of thee by the hearing of the ear: but now mine eye seeth thee.

5Before, I only heard about You with my ears. But now my own eyes have seen You.

6Wherefore I abhor myself, and repent in dust and ashes.

6So I take back what I said. I am sorry, sitting here in dust and ashes."

NoteThe KJV says Job "abhors" himself. The older sense here is that he takes back the words he said, not that he hates who he is.

7And it was so, that after the LORD had spoken these words unto Job, the LORD said to Eliphaz the Temanite, My wrath is kindled against thee, and against thy two friends: for ye have not spoken of me the thing that is right, as my servant Job hath.

7After the LORD said these things to Job, He spoke to Eliphaz from Teman. He said, "I am angry with you and your two friends. You did not say true things about Me, but My servant Job did.

8Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you after your folly, in that ye have not spoken of me the thing which is right, like my servant Job.

8So bring seven bulls and seven rams. Go to My servant Job. Burn them on an altar as a gift to Me. Then My servant Job will pray for you. I will listen to his prayer. I will not punish you for your foolish words, though you did not say true things about Me, as My servant Job did."

9So Eliphaz the Temanite and Bildad the Shuhite and Zophar the Naamathite went, and did according as the LORD commanded them: the LORD also accepted Job.

9So Eliphaz from Teman, Bildad from Shuah, and Zophar from Naamah went and did what the LORD said. And the LORD listened to Job's prayer.

10And the LORD turned the captivity of Job, when he prayed for his friends: also the LORD gave Job twice as much as he had before.

10After Job prayed for his friends, the LORD gave him good things again. He gave Job twice as much as he had before.

NoteThe KJV says God "turned the captivity of Job." Job was never a prisoner. It means God turned his life around and made things good again.

11Then came there unto him all his brethren, and all his sisters, and all they that had been of his acquaintance before, and did eat bread with him in his house: and they bemoaned him, and comforted him over all the evil that the LORD had brought upon him: every man also gave him a piece of money, and every one an earring of gold.

11Then all his brothers and sisters came to see him. His old friends came too. They ate a meal with him in his house. They felt sad with him and comforted him for all the trouble the LORD had let come to him. Each one gave him a piece of silver and a gold ring.

Note"A piece of money" was a weight of silver. People used silver like we use coins today.

12So the LORD blessed the latter end of Job more than his beginning: for he had fourteen thousand sheep, and six thousand camels, and a thousand yoke of oxen, and a thousand she asses.

12The LORD blessed the last part of Job's life more than the first part. He had 14,000 sheep, 6,000 camels, 1,000 pairs of oxen, and 1,000 female donkeys.

13He had also seven sons and three daughters.

14And he called the name of the first, Jemima; and the name of the second, Kezia; and the name of the third, Kerenhappuch.

14He named his first daughter Jemima. He named the second one Kezia. He named the third one Kerenhappuch.

15And in all the land were no women found so fair as the daughters of Job: and their father gave them inheritance among their brethren.

15In all that land, no women were as beautiful as Job's daughters. Their father gave them a share of his land and things, along with their brothers.

16After this lived Job an hundred and forty years, and saw his sons, and his sons’ sons, even four generations.

16After this, Job lived 140 more years. He saw his children, and their children, for four generations.

17So Job died, being old and full of days.

17Then Job died. He was very old and had lived a full life.
