2 Maccabees

A shortened version of a five-book history by Jason of Cyrene, opening with two letters from the Jews in Jerusalem to the Jews in Egypt. It covers the years when Antiochus stripped the temple and outlawed the Jewish law, and it tells what people did then: a scribe named Eleazar and seven brothers with their mother die rather than eat pig meat, and Judas Maccabeus fights the king's armies and takes the temple back. Heaven shows up in the fighting more than once, with riders in the air and messengers in white, and the writer stops now and then to explain his own work.
