1 Timothy

A letter from Paul to Timothy, whom he left behind in Ephesus to stop certain people there from teaching a different doctrine. Most of it is instructions for church life: how and for whom to pray, how men and women are to behave, what is required of an overseer and a deacon, which widows the church should support, and how elders are paid and corrected. Paul also tells his own story, warns about teachers who argue endlessly and treat godliness as a way to make money, and closes with what to say to slaves and to the rich.
