1 Maccabees

A history of the Jewish revolt against the Greek king Antiochus and his order that everyone in his kingdom live the same way. It begins with the priest Mattathias, who kills a king's officer and runs to the mountains with his sons, and then follows those sons (Judas, Jonathan, and Simon) through battles, sieges, treaties with Rome and Sparta, and the cleansing of the temple in Jerusalem. It is told year by year, with copies of letters and decrees set into the story, and it ends with Simon killed at a banquet.
